  1. I'm expecting 6 bonus points for Elk for next year's fall application and hoping for a decent shot as a complete Elk newbie.

My arrows are 150g Single Bevel Ironwill on 300 spine micro HMRs from the Vector shop with a lighted knock come in at 608g on a 70# draw shooting 232ft/s. They are shooting great with field points. I've got about 30#s to lose before I can be effective at getting to ELK so expecting some good conditioning over the next 12 months for bow and fitness.

Gonna do one of the OTC Elk hunts this year to see what can be seen and get my mind tilted in the right direction, but I don't know what I don't know so could just be a learning experience ... at least I won't be as fat ...lol

At the range I use windex or rubbing alcohol followed by a dry patch. I think it removes some fouling, its a lot easier to load after a couple of shots. Out of the two, alcohol seems to dry faster when looking at the dry patch. just my observations.

Totally agree! It's also the reason I went back to pyrodex from blackhorn since windex/IPA mix cleans the bore easily with one wet and one dry patch. 777 and blackhorn still had the crud ring and affected my follow-up shots.

  3. I have a 2002 Sequoia I run around with in the desert, and is happily pin-striped. We have an unpin-striped 2006 4Runner road warrior, so I can't compare rocky desert performance, but know 4Runners can go anywhere.

As a big guy, I'm happy to climb into the sequoia after being out in the desert because the head space is greater and the captain seat is wider, just feels more like getting into a large pick-up than a car IMO.

The metal skid plate under the sequoia show it's been used often, and the massive fuel tank gives me piece of mind. 4Low haven't found much she can't get out of.

Returned this morning from a 1.5 day on the Pacific Queen with limits of 30-70# fish with the majority being well over 50. Apparently the day before they were only finding the 20/40 class fish so yay for the nicer fish. The fish are in very close. We spent the entire time between La Jolla and Del Mar not far from shore. The boat got good bait and fuel prior to our departure so we left around 7:00PM and we got on fish at midnight. The usual flatfalls, coltsnipers and even big knife jigs were working. The heaviest jigs were preferred and also got to the zone faster.  At sunrise, the switch to flylined bait worked. Steady amount of fish caught that way. Stayed on fish but bite slowed about 1:00PM till the evening hit. Had a great school of good sized fish that wanted to play just after dark and wow, what a cluster f$@k.. 30+ lines down to 250' and 6 to 10 fish over 50# hooked up at the same time makes for the biggest mess of rods and lines you can possibly imagine. No clue how many were lost but we had to stop fishing as we limited the boat in short order.  Never saw a dropper rig go in the water the entire trip.

We had several boats in the area but not more than eight or so at any one time until the night bite, then maybe a dozen or so and screaming could be heard from many boats. Fish counts are kind of all over the place but with the fish this close, you are able to fish two nights if needed. The captain, Gavin said we would be fishing till 3AM if needed. Luckily it wasn't and we were able to get a good nights sleep before returning to the dock. (Having cell service the entire time was kind of nice too)

That's awesome man! Post up the pics

  5. I dunno man, non-res applications have 1 in 3 chance for a tag for 0 pts, and a 1 in 2 chance with 1 pt (you must have at least a loyalty point), and better than 2 in 3 with the hunters ed point added.

If you all have hunters ed and the loyalty points for 2 pts each on a 3 person application, should be a no-brainer.

Are non-res hunters eligible for the loyalty and hunter ed?

last year it was the highest non-res applications to date for this hunt but it didn't even hit the 10% non-res threshold (99 apps out of the 1334 total apps for this hunt). obviously more apps overall this year, but might just have been bad-luck rather than the man. grab a bow and come down in December!

I finally got a $90 charge for two deer tags this AM. My 3/4/5 choices all traditionally have leftovers and/or are easily attained in those draw choice selections, but I was starting to sweat it after Tuesday morning with nothing pending.

I read this and went to my banking app... was so excited to see $42 taken out by AZGFD today and went to the regs. since that didn't seem like deer or sandhill... realized I renewed my migratory and extended my license over the weekend :(... bow it is!
