Frustrated newbie seeking advice
Calebwalter replied to Calebwalter's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
After I was drawn I researched this forum. Found a good thread that was years old talking about how they have over hunter the deer in this unit, and how the lion population is getting out of hand. Seems people used to like 24A and now they don’t. -

Yes it is. Everything between the 188 and the 60 north of globe is closed almost all the way to timber camp. I’ve called the Mesa Ranger Station and they said they have no intention of opening it until it has rained. I also talked to azgfd and they said most likely the Forest rangers will keep it closed after it rains for a short period because the risk of mudslides in areas that are freshly burned. -

This is great advice. I’ve been looking “for deer” in general. Picking apart Every piece of the landscape seems like a more thorough way to approach it. If I’ve found beds and poop within A reasonable distance to water do you think those clues are enough to to warrant spending more time glassing that area? -

I know there are better but it’s the best that I could afford this year. Since this is my first year hunting it’s been an expensive year haha. Rifle, scope, binos, tripod, backpack etc. People I’ve asked said that because of the fires, and lack of summer rains, that the Coues deer are going to be in lower elevations looking for water. Do you think that’s true? A nice lady who hinted to living at a ranch south of globe, said that she’s seen a couple deer at their cattle tanks and a boat load of coyotes. -

This will be my strategy on my next outing. Maybe I’ve been glassing hillsides that are too close, In the 100-300 yards away range. ive watched every meateater episode about Coues deer and Steve Rinella said something like “once you see one, and your eyes know what to look for, you will see more”. That’s what I’m hoping for, I just haven’t seen one yet... -

I definitely found some beds/game trails/ deer poop this morning. This might seem like an odd question, but how long does it take deer poop to get dry/hard? I’m assuming it’s softish when it comes out haha, all the poop I’ve found is dry and hard. I actually tried to smash it today and it was so hard it just pushed into the ground. does that mean it’s very old poop? -

How “near” water will they be bedded? -

I’ve read that page looking for clues many times. I’ve gone to most of the “suggested” areas other than ones that are closed due to the recent fires. Im very excited to take Duwanes class in the spring. I feel like that guy is a very deep well of knowledge. -

When glassing, what distance are you concentrating your efforts? For instance this morning I was 200 yards from a water hole. I was glassing the water hole and the hillside behind it, which was about 200-300 yards away. The hillsides I was looking at were north facing. Trying to find deer in the shade. Am I too close to that hillside? Should I be glassing different directions? Are deer going to bed within 100 yards of water? -

This morning I hiked to a water hole that was about 1.5 miles from a road. Sat it until about 12:30. Saw some quail and 1 javelina come to water. -

My lovely wife has signed me up for a Duwane Adams glassing class but it’s not until February 😕 -
My dog threw up all over, and inside, my cheap Plano rifle case last weekend and I’m in the market for a nicer HARD case. Something like a pelican or Plano field locker. I’m looking for something suitable for TSA. Interior needs to be in the 50” range.

I leave out East in Gilbert so I’m a member at Rio Salado Sportsmans club. They have a 500 yard range but I don’t have the time to get “qualified” for it. Maybe next year I’ll look into getting a membership elsewhere
-
Is the 500 yard range open to the public? I hadn’t heard of that range and their website says their “public range” only goes out to 100 yards.

Bump for a great rimfire rifle. I bought one when they first came out and I love it. Great trainer for a t3x, and mine shoots sub MOA at 50 yards.

I’m in the same boat. I have 13 rounds left 😕

I just saw this video on YouTube yesterday! I’ve watched a couple of your videos trying to get ready for my first hunt 👍👍 -
How does donating a tag work? I have a tag for that hunt (it’s going to be my first ever hunt) and my good friend from Idaho wants to fly down and tag along. He was interested in trying to get a left over tag but was behind the ball because we both don’t know enough about it. I know he’s interested in getting a tag!

My daughter is almost of age to go to public school, and I’m guilty of buying into all the stereotypes that gets regurgitated about teachers, but hearing some of you guys talk about your passion in education has given me a new perspective. Thank you guys for trying to teach the next generation of adults. 👍
