    30A Dos Cabezas access issues

Actually , chuck brooks is the one who lets the sheriff up on coopers peak to hunt , your right the klumps probably want nothing to do with any law enforcement.

    30A Dos Cabezas access issues

Chuck Brooks closed the huartado road 3 years ago, The klumps closed mascot mine road many years ago. Used to be able to walk up the road, but now they wont even let you walk on there road , They do let a couple of sheriff buddies up there to hunt , but they are quick to bust you if you walk anywhere near private property.

    Glassing

Very well said , Someone mentioned a shirt or something over your head, I use and adult bib with velcro where you attach it around your neck. but instead of wearing it as a bib , you wear it like a superman cape , then while glassing pull in up over your head onto the binos, And when not glassing just flip it behind your head out of the way.I would recommend, trying to find one in camo.

    Found game camera follow up

With a little bit of leg work , we got in contact with the owner of the camera, that a bear tore down from the tree. he was very happy,as were we . It was great, we were able to share some good info with each other about the area. And even better he got his camera and sd card back.

    Found game camera follow up

I honestly believe the majority of guys on this site would go out of there way to do the same thing A nice lady at the game and fish actually helped me track this guy down. I told them the situation , of coarse they could not give me his number , so I gave them my number to pass on to him , and they did,he called me, We had a good chat, shared some good info about the area we are both hunting, made a new friend. It all worked out.

    Checked camera today

man , I have those same bear boxes for all my cameras , Those thief's must of had crow bars and hammers because those boxes are tough .I have no problem with people using this site to show pictures of these jerks . hopefully we can start catching some of these thieves. Its to bad becouse there are a lot of quality hunters out there who see dozens of cameras a year who would never think of bothering other peoples stuff.

    looking for Mathew Myrick

We were checking our game cameras and found a damaged game camera on the ground and the guys name is on it , but no phone number and we want to get it back to him. It looks like it was ripped down by a bear, WE would have just rehung it but it was not functioning,it it had a lock on it ,so I could not turn it back on. My number is 480-390-6509 Mason

    Gunna Go Postal!

If a guy left a note for me , while I was hunting using cameras or blinds , I would try and find him and thank him for being a good guy. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I think this guy is lucky you only put his blind in the water. If it were me I would have probably waited for that scum bag to come back. I understand your anger trying to do the courteous thing and have him turn around and crap on you. thanks for letting me rant also!! maybe instead of duct taping the camera inoperable, he could have placed a piece of duct tape over the flash, while he was hunting, then remove it when he leaves.that would have been the polite thing to do.

    Game camera regs

I will try and bite my lip when I talk about the forest service , I think a lot of them have an agenda , And it's definitely different from mine , I think they are importing some of them from northern California ,Don't get me wrong ,some of them are great and are doing the right thing. It may just be upper management dictating there agenda. I think it's a bunch of crap. I'll probably get ripped on because of my post but thats how I feel .I learned the hard way with game cameras, so now I hike them in about 5 miles . I feel bad for you guys that lost your stuff. I hope I did not offend anyone to bad.

    3a/4b dry lake

I know this area fairly well, mostly just from coyote hunting, But we drew 2 cow tags in there for Aug 6. We did some scouting in there this weekend ,We got there before the sun came up to try and glass from the pink cliffs ,but we only saw deer coming out of the fields. It was very wet and green up there, I'm wondering if they don't hit the alfalfa fields as often when feed is so plentiful elsewhere. Also I was under the impression that the reason they have this dry lake hunt is to help keep the elk out of the alfalfa fields? Maybe not because the farmers have locked up all of the easy access to get behind the fields. Does anyone have any info that they are willing to share? 3a side? 4b side? North side or south side of the fields? It appears that when they leave those fields they will walk at least 2 or 3 miles before they bed down.? Any help would be great!

    Lucky to have my cam

You can still view those pictures on that deleted sd card by downloading a free sd card recovery software program from the internet. You have to pay for most of them but the free ones also work. try zero assumption recovery. There are others that are easier to use . I've had to do the same thing, and more times then not the culprit is caught on camera. The funny thing is he thinks its all good because he deleted all your pictures. I'm not worried about sharing that info on this forum becouse we are only top notch guys who would never mess with other peoples stuff!!! Red Rabbit probably has some better info on this free sd card recovery stuff,I don't know him , But he really seems to know his stuff. Hopefully he can chime in about this free software stuff. One more thing, In order to recover those pictures, you should not take any more pictures on that same sd card, because it will erase those pictures once the card is totally full again. But it wont erase those first pictures until the card is totally full.

    Mysterious pics

my older moultrie was not that great , but I have 4 of the newer style I-45 and they are great , very sensitive, almost to a fault, I get pictures of dragon flies, small birds, one camera had almost 3000 pictures in 3 weeks and my regular duracells were still at 80% full,I have had good luck with moultrie overall. but i am planning on checking my cameras at the end of the month so I can add one of those new coverts to my collection.LOL. I also bought some bear boxes for my cameras from Eric at payson outfitters ,They are truly awesome. I posted a picture of one of our bear boxes , its about a 9 mile round trip to check all the cameras and my boys love going to see all the cool pictures. Is your moultrie camera about 3 years old? I think its the d series, if so they are pretty crappy compared to the newer ones. but you will never go wrong with the coverts.

How to search using key words

Is there a way to search for something like dry lake? when I type that in ,It says I need to use at least 4 letters. I should probably do a little research before asking an easy question like that, but ant help would be great. Thanks, Mason

    Elk shed

We were at a family camp out near Clints well, We decided to go fishing at blue ridge lake, without a boat that lake is tough to fish, so before we left i pulled out my leica geovids 15 x 56's and did a little glassing and found this shed and the little one from 700 yards away. I took the picture with my point and shoot camera through my binos, I was pretty impressed at how well the picture turned out at that distance. the camera is a panasonic lumix ZS3. Sorry about the clarity of the shed at 700 yards , when i shrunk the picture in paint ,I shrunk it to 175 kb . not even a third of a mega pixel. I,m trying to restore it to it's original size , but it might be to late, oh well. And here i was bragging on how nice that picture looks through my binos!

    balistic calculator of the droid

The iphone has about a dozen apps for a ballistic cauculator. some of them you have to pay for , some are free. I got the winchester and istrelok apps for free. The winchester one is great, but only goes out to 500 yards, and is limited on bullet weights in its data base, the istrelok is also free and its great. just do an app search on your doid for (ballistic), And you should get a few to choose from. Some of the ones you pay for look awesome , but the free ones work just fine.
  17. I bought my son a 243 remington model 700 We are going back and forth on which scope to put on this gun. The 3 options are: 1.vortex viper 6.5-20x50 30mm tube ,v plex reticle, new but open box total price 350$ 2. leupold vx 2 4-12x50 LR duplex reticle , new , total price 430$ 3.nikon monarch 4-16x50 sf matte black , nikoplex reticle, new, total price 380$ Whatever I get I,m planning on getting a kenton turret. From what I understand the vortex viper says it has target turrets, but I don't see any moa numbers on the turret , does that mean just count clicks in your head? Anyhow any advice or opinions would be great. We are looking to shoot out to 600 yards max.

    what's the best scope??

We got a scope for his gun , it was a compromise from my original plan ,but it will work just fine. My friend saw that i was looking for a scope and sold me his leupold VX II 3-9x40 LR duplex still in the box for 200$ .
  19. mason a

    what's the best scope??

This was the option i was first looking at, and I still may go with , but I was trying to meet somewhere in the middle , because my son who is now 12 , has been using my rifle that has a zeiss conquest 6.5-20x50 scope on it , And he now knows how sweet it is to use a quality scope, So how much is too much on a 243? In 5 or 6 years his younger brother may get this gun , but then again he may want to take it with him. The other problem is that he killed a cow elk at 580 yards and then a coues at 538 yards last year using that scope, so he knows how important a quality scope is. Don't get me wrong he will be happy with whatever we decide to do, I think it's more me than him who wants a high power scope on that 243 , watching him make those 2 long shots was something special as his father,so I guess it's me wanting to give him that better scope ,but then again a 243 probably is not the best long range caliber. but either way we will set it up with a timney trigger and load him some good berger bullets , who knows it may be a long time before he has to make another long range shot. He is not picky , He told me anything with horns. Anyhow we are still looking at all options. Thanks for the all the advice!

    newly found water soursce

Last year during our deer hunt , we stumbled across a seap that had lots of water, when the rest of our springs ran dry. this seap is not on any maps, and is not in a drainage. It filled my 1 gig sd card in about 10 days approx. 13 different bucks and maybe 30 does , but nothing very big, but it just goes to show you that there is more water sources than what the maps show sorry so many pictures , as you can see by the dates these are from last year, the one picture has 5 bucks in it , and if you zoom in there is a little spike also I currently have a camera there with a 4 gig card , i'm hoping to see some growth on some of those bucks kinda strange not one picture of bears or lions, but one of my other cameras not even a half mile away has more bear and lion pictures than deer pictures so i know they are in the area. i'm convinced the deer feel more comfortable at seaps than they do in pools of water along along drainages, at least my game cameras tell me so.
  21. When you hunt an area that is either wilderness or access is cut off for one reason or another, How far do you hike in with everything on your back for a 3 or 4 day hunt? Assuming you can pump water from a spring, close by your base camp. How far is just a little crazy? Or i guess how motivated are you? We hike in 2 to 3 miles from the nearest road , climb about 1500 feet in elevation , Im sure for some of you thats a walk in the park. This year we may be going in farther , about 4.5 miles each way ,mostly ridgelines and game trails, no nice hiking rails at all, plus 2500 feet of elevation climb. oh yea, one more thing ,my pack ends up weighing about 75 lbs,you know what they say "If your going to be dumb , you better be tough". So how far is to far to hike to set up a base camp?

    What Causes Seeps?

    Sorry i'm a little late on this thread, Lark had the best suggestions. follow heavily traveled deer trails , sometimes the will lead you to water, Also pay close attention to the type of trees that are near the seeps and springs, also like lark said, see what color those trees are in November , If something looks especially thick and green ,check it out. They truely can be a jackpot, and when you start to put the pieces of the puzzle together , they become easier to find. There has been some great info on finding seeps on this thread. Also notice the tall bunchy grass around the seep, I posted some better pictures of the seep on "hunting coues deer in arizona" under the [ how far do you back pack to hunt coues] {how far is too far}

    Backpack hunting for coues

There in lies the problem with a lot of areas. It's hard to find spots that are 5 miles from a road and if you do, it's because there is little to no water in the area. Where there is water, there are usually roads. I agree with you for the most part. However, there are many a spring in the middle of several wilderness areas more than 10 miles deep. I have hunted this area for years , and i was convinced that I knew where all of the water souces were. I was wrong , We found 3 seaps just in the last 12 months , that are not on any maps, that were right under our noses the whole time. More sign here than at any of our springs that are on the maps. And these seaps had water last year when most of our springs were bone dry. By the way , I do agree, you are not guaranteed a bigger buck just because you hike in farther. Hiking in has its pros and cons ,Me and my 12 year old son love it, and we usually go with a couple of brother in laws, it makes for lots of fun stories at thanksgiving dinner and get togethers I posted a picture of one of the seaps we found, when we were retrieving my sons deer last year , pure luck finding it . sorry the pictures are out of focus, The last picture was the hike out almost back to the truck, and we were tired .
