Any reports from the late bull hunts. 5b, 7w, 8?

I know someone that killed in 8, 5b had opportunities but didn't connect and 6b didn't hardly see an elk.

    First Elk (Vid added)

We were seeing lots of fresh sign but not any elk after starting Friday afternoon. Just after stepping off for yesterday afternoons hunt we had 2 cows trot off into the wind. We gave them time to relax and started still hunting through the thick cedars glassing ahead to find em. 30 mins later we picked up elk legs coming straight at us. We were able to prone out with a couple shooting lanes. She caught my wife frozen in a small clearing and started to take off. With some cow calls I was able to pull her back. Ethan had to shift a few times as she was zig zagging in and out of our lanes but I got her stopped broadside and he smoked her just like we practiced at a whole 45 yards. She was in a bunch of lava rock with a bunch of other elk tracks so we spread out a few yards and he was the first to find blood. He followed a nice blood trail right too her 50 yards away. She's young and small but will eat good.

    First Elk (Vid added)

Had a camcorder but in the scramble my wife decided to go for cell phone instead. Here's a lil video of Ethan's shot going down.

Lance, he did good and put it right where we practice, halfway up the body in the crease of the shoulder. Entry (left shoulder) Exit (right shoulder - removed) Right after the shot he told me "I love this gun!" Grandpas gifted 1952 Remington 721 .270 Win shooting factory Winchester Ballistic Silver Tip 130gr we cleaned up and modernized last year for his first deer hunt.
  9. In a couple weeks my young pup will be joining me for the first time for some scouting trips in the desert - just tagging along in cactus country. U guys with bird dogs use protective booties for ur dogs and if so what do u recommend?

    Bullet selection questions

My oldest shoots a savage 7mm-08. Has taken 2 cows and 1 bull and all dropped dead within 20 yards with good crease of the shoulder/half way up the body lung shots. Distances were 110, 87, and 175. His gun likes factory Hornady 139gr SST's and they have performed fine. I don't reload. Whatever they're shooting we practice so they're not afraid of the gun and can find proper eye relief on the scope besides shooting decent groups. Even more, we also drill shot placement, a smooth/calm shot process, and where to aim so they know what to expect when the moment comes. A little dry fire at home on a magazine pic of an elk/deer is good practice. I try to keep it simple. Fun to see them take such pride in their good shot placement just like we've practiced. We leave Friday for our next jr cow hunt for my youngest. Good luck

Polaris ranger question - rough, backfire

I ended up putting some old/bad gas in my ranger during my elk hunt which put it out of commission pretty much. After syphoning and replacing the gas I had what felt like clogged injectors. Called around to a few places and was recommended to run Yamaha Fuel Med thru it first and not a bad idea to change the spark plugs. First thing to do before getting drastic. Nobody near me had it in stock so I got some more aggressive fuel injector cleaner from the auto store and so far 🤞🏻it's not sputtering after a couple miles test drive. Once I can find it I will probably also run fuel Med thru it too just to be thorough.

    2016 Desert Ram

Thx for the comments! The hunt WAS epic and I committed to it like no other hunt I've ever done; and I've had a couple real tests of will and endurance before. Not possible without the mentorship of a few crazy talented desert hunters that as I said before, you know who you are. To give a proper and official shout out: Clay Goldman at Mogollon Taxidermy did the mount. His attention to detail on the animal AND the rock/vegetation is outstanding IMO. I provided him a sketch, narrative of the "look", and pictures of the ram alive and rocks for reference. Personally I think he nailed it and couldn't give him higher recommendations for anyone looking to get any taxidermy work done. He now has my archery bull.

    NUT JOB

From as many angles LEO's get thanklessly crapped on by pretty much everybody this is just one obvious reason why they are so necessary. The general public is so naive regarding the wolves that are kept from their doors on a daily basis. Condolences to all impacted and hats off to the first responders.

Couldn't pass - taxi pic added

Not that it matters but out of boredom I was goin thru some of the pics from my hunt and found a trail cam pic that I believe is my same bull that I tried to kill the day before. I had chased him almost 2.5 miles and had his lead cow at 60 but he stepped behind her a lil too far for my comfort at 73. He was headed towards a tank that I had a cam on watching a wallow and he beat me there by 10 mins cause I was sneaking past his cows. The day before I didn't notice the long 3rd but now looking at the cam pic seems pretty close. Anyway, just interesting to have a live pic of him the day before I got him.

    Opinions/help with my stepson

I knew I would have to scale back but I didn't realize how much. I learned to compromise with my boys telling them that if they give me the first and last 3 hours of the day we can do whatever they want in between. I take all the bb guns, bows, toys etc to keep them occupied. My older son isn't super interested in hunting but he's killed 3 elk and has been going along here and there since he was 8. When he's out there he enjoys it and automatically becomes a hunting mentor to his lil brother so I know he has appreciated some of it. I agree that once they have success, the hook is set. My kids will hunt. I will provide them that foundation. When they become adults and move out they can choose what they want from there.

    Mount Hanging Tips?

Just got my first ever mount back yesterday, 1/2 life size sheep, and looking for any tips for a clean/safe way to put him on the wall from you with experience. It's ply wood backed.

    Mount Hanging Tips?

The mount is plywood backed not the wall. Thx for all the tips. He's up.

    Mount Hanging Tips?

Got it hung on a stud not too far off center. Per Clay at Mogollon Taxidermy 1, 3/8, 3 1/2" lag bolt sticking 1/2" out will hold the mount. The plywood backing had a mounting hole reinforced with metal that the head of the lag slips into. Feels solid. Will post pic in my original thread recapping the hunt. Thx for the tips

    Mount Hanging Tips?

Unfortunately I was still in elk camp when he got picked up at the banquet so I didn't get to see how it was mounted. Hopefully I have a stud or 2 in the right spot

I switched from slick truck 100 magnums this year to QAD Exodus 125 full blade. Performed very well and shoot just like field points with a quick tune.

Unless I tag a bull soon I will not but my 1/2 life size mount will be.

    Halftime report

I have seen good bulls almost every time I have left camp. This morn I saw 8 total plus but none are shooters for me. I came close on 2 nice bulls so far (6x6 and 6x7) and missed a dream bull 2 nights ago. That one will haunt me for a long time. I left 2 herds bedded this morn and they were getting pretty fiesty (finally) this morn. None of the bulls I've seen with this group are shooters for me (yet) but I know there's 1 or 2 big bulls hanging on the fringes of these herds waiting to take over. The wind has been rough for sure. I had 15 cows come into the tank I was sitting last night with no mature bull in the last 15 mins of light.
