    HAM

I have not seen a thread discussing this so I thought I would throw it out... who here is a HAM? As some know, but all should, there is a great way to communicate from the outback called the HAM radio. If you would like more info please ask or please list your call sign if you have one. So to start the intro... I am KF7AJU, Dave, North Phoenix

The morse code has been eliminated from the test. The base license gets you on the air with the most used frequencies.

    HAM

qrz.com has the tests online. There are about 15 different ones for the technical class (base license) that all pick from the same pool of questions. If you just go through them repeatedly you can pass the test. Then just $15 and go take the test when its given in your area. Its not hard (heck I did it). You can pick up a ham radio for not much more than a good CB.

    HAM

I'm new to ham radio. I was convinced when I was hunting with my brother north of the Catalinas and he could talk to a friend in Tucson. There was no cell coverage and it was nice to be able to communicate. I have a radio in the Jeep and also picked up a handheld unit. That way I can use the handheld while hunting and set the Jeep to act as a repeater with more power. Wed at 8:15pm is the 4x4ham group on the Shaw Butte and Mt Ord repeaters. Subject is generally emergency contact information and offroading. Google 4x4ham for info. Mondays at 9pm on the same repeaters is the Maricopa emergency response group. Their subjects are how to use the system and beginners and very welcome.

    HAM

Glad to hear your interested. The more of us linked together the better. A Ham radio can hit a repeater (and/or another ham) from almost anywhere in the state. The license is easy and only $15, radios are about the same as a CB but much more powerful. Anyone else?

  9. I was with clients at a drywall company in Tucson yesterday and saw a black Jeep TJ with a sticker on the windshield. Though I was standing there as you left I was discussing a project with a client and couldn't break away or I would have said howdy... so heres your howdy

    CW.com sticker sighting

I was there if it was the drywall company that is fairly close to the freeway in Tuscon. I don't want to say the name. Sorry for your job... this economy is the pits right now. I don't work for the company but rather was on a project that indirectly involved the family that owns the company as a long time Arizona family.

    Monarch ATB Tripod adaptor

I use that Nikon adapter. Mine stays on the tripod 100% of the time. It just takes a few seconds to attach the binos to it. It is very solid and it does add some height.

  20. This just in... Off-highway vehicle decal price set at $25 Dec. 19, 2008 New state laws requiring purchase take effect Jan. 1 PHOENIX — A coalition of state agencies has agreed on a price for the new off-highway vehicle (OHV) decal that will be required in Arizona to operate most ATVs, dirt bikes, and other OHVs meeting certain criteria beginning in January. The “OHV Decal” will cost $25 and will be issued annually through the Arizona Department of Transportation, Motor Vehicle Division (MVD). Revenues from the purchase of the decal will help better manage Arizona’s exploding OHV use and help protect natural resources. “This is the most important legislation that I have sponsored,” said Rep. Jerry Weiers (R-Glendale). “This legislation will allow folks to better enjoy outdoor Arizona in a safe and responsible way.” The OHV Decal is a part of new OHV laws taking effect Jan. 1, 2009. The laws will require the annual purchase of the decal for any OHV designed by the manufacturer primarily for travel over unimproved terrain and weighing 1,800 pounds or less. Beginning Jan. 1, owners whose OHVs are currently titled or registered in Arizona may purchase the decal online at www.servicearizona.com. After Jan. 1, title and registration services and decals will be available at MVD offices. The new laws also contain other provisions about titling, registration, equipment, and responsible operation. Purchase of the decal is a “user-play, user-pay” fee that will allow the OHV to be legally operated in Arizona as well as in other states that have reciprocity agreements. Revenue from purchases of the decal will be used in many ways to benefit Arizona OHV users. This will bolster the State Parks grant program that is used for damage mitigation, trail construction, habitat restoration and various other programs. Game and Fish will use funds to hire new law enforcement officers specifically for OHV enforcement. It is also creating new OHV education classes that can be taken by OHV users and may be court ordered for those found in violation of OHV laws. State Land will use a portion of the funds for law enforcement, habitat restoration and access across state trust lands. Arizona Game and Fish Department, MVD, Arizona State Parks and Arizona State Land Department have worked cooperatively to determine a price that is reasonable for all users. “It’s been a long time coming,” said Hank Rogers with the Apache County Rough Riders, an OHV group in eastern Arizona. “We’re very happy it’s been set at $25. We’re thrilled it’s here and look forward to putting the dollars to good use for the benefit of all Arizonans. Enactment of the laws was the end product of a huge collaborative effort between OHV groups, conservation and sportsmen’s organizations, government agencies and elected officials, who all worked together to achieve this positive outcome for Arizona’s natural resources and outdoor recreation enthusiasts. OHV Tags

My brother went to the MVD for a plate or whatever, while there he asked for the OHV tag that will be required come Jan 1. They stated that was sold through Game and Fish. He speed dials G&F while waiting for the MVD person to do their thing and they said it was sold through MVD! To funny, he gives the phone to the lady at MVD and she talks with G&F for a bit. End of story... neither knew anything about getting the tags, when bro asked G&F guy if they would be ticketing for no OHV tags he said yes they would. What a racket... can't buy the tag but you can get a ticket for not having it! Its only 2 weeks to go, you would think they would have it worked out by now. What if you wanted to go hunting for 2 weeks starting at Christmas time?

    OHV Tags

I've found very very few parked at the ends of roads. In fact, I hardly find them parked ever. But I definitely have seen where they've been driven, and not a road in site. And they should be ticketed and / or impounded for it.
