  1. One year I passed on an old 5x5 bull in the bottom on a canyon in 23 because he was walking uphill to my left at about 40 yards and I didn't feel comfortable with the shot with my skill as an archer on a moving target.

    A few years later up in 12AW I passed on a easy shot on a tall 4x4 as he ran across a meadow about 50 yards away on opening morning of rifle season because I felt there were bigger deer to be had. Next day weather moved in and I didn't have another opportunity the rest of the hunt, so it goes. No regrets just memories and I'd do the same thing if presented with the same situation.

  2. Got my bull head sitting in camp and it's starting to stink. It's skined out all ready. Any tricks besides boiling it out ?

     

    Just get the water to a boil and put it in but don't keep it boiling or the teeth can come out. Let it sit for an hour then use a coat hanger to get the brains out and to clean out the nasal passages. Then repeat it again. I have also heard of people using a pressure washer but I don't know at what PSI.


  3. I'd say you are running too much tire and could probably be fine with Load Range D. If the E's are designed for 80 I would never run them less than 65. I don't know what kind of trailer you have but is it weighs 5K you really, really, really want to put a brake module on it especially considering you are towing with a vehicle that has such a shot wheelbase.

    How many pounds of pressure are the rims rated for? Probably only 65. When you are towing, especially in hot weather you should check the pressure again after 50 miles or so as the tires will heat up and the pressure will increase as much as five pounds. If you are running the pressure too far below the recommended pressure it is going to increase the drag and make the tire heat up even more. If the tire pressure is low you will loose integrity of the sidewall and increase the amount on give in it which is a very bad thing especially if taking a turn at high speed since the sidewall will initially give as you increase the G Force going into the turn and the tire grip will be delayed because the sidewall isn't rigid/stiff enough to prevent the inevitable delay.

    If you are not going to keep them reasonable inflated you are better off running D's and keeping them at 55psi. Tongue weigh is something that the dealer can tell you for the trailer. You can also use chalk and put a line across the tread and see if the complete tread pattern is contacting the road. I have an F250 and Have TOYO's in E that are rated for 65 and keep them at 60.


  4. BigBrowns and I met up with Rossislider and his son early this morning and waited for the sky to get light. It started off slow and gradually we had a pretty steady flight of Mourning Doves for a couple of hours before it became about even with about 50% of the birds being White Wings but by that time we were close to out limits.

    I ended up with 14/1 using my Winchester Model 12, good news was no snakes.   5. I know it's hard, but sometimes the best way to find new Dove spots is to drive around during prime time looking for flights of Dove. This is how you should be scouting for Dove as well. I have a really large loop around various towns looking for Dove flying. Once I find Dove I zero in on where they are going and where they came from. This really helps in finding great morning and evening spots. I bet you will find better Dove hunting within 5 miles of your normal area. With all the rain and development hot spots can change year to year. Scouting is the key!

     

    That is how I used to find places to hunt. I would be looking all summer and would even go to places on the weekends and sit and wait for it to get light and then stay for an hour or so. I burnt a lot of gas but it usually paid out. I gave that advice to a co-worker a while back but he decided to go to his usual place just north of Florence and was very disappointed this past weekend as the birds just weren't there this year for him and his son. They only scored about five between them so he is going to have his work cutout for himself this weekend. He thinks it may partially be due to the abundance of water.

    They even pump water out of Saguaro and back up into Canyon at night, when electricity is cheap, and release it back during the day when the demand is higher, conceptually creating free electricity.

     

    I was reading an article on this not long ago, I had no idea we did this.

     

     

     

    Lots of people don't realize it. I have seen quite a few boats listing on one side in shallow water in the back part of Saguaro because they had their boat too close to shore at night.

Just out of curiosity, but with spring hunts running from jan-may, fire restrictions and forest closures june & july, and hunts again from august through dec..... when exactly is it that nonhunters can use the forest/public land without being inconsiderate jerks that are ruining peoples hunts?

     

    Sorry, I know logic isnt welcome on internet forums, but that attitude just kills me. 'I have a $120 tag, so now the 2,000,000 acres of public land in this state is off limits to everyone else who doesnt have a tag!'

     

    This month there is a hunt almost every weekend plus the Fall Turkey Hunt at the end of the month which I'll be out scouting for between now and then. Good luck to everyone with a tag. Stop by and say howdy if you see me out there in 23.
