  1. I'd like to take my 9 year old out for a night of catfishing somewhere within a few hours. Not necessarily for size (though if we got a big one he wouldn't be too sad!).

Problem is.....I have a buddy going with us who needs a hip replacement, so it's gotta be something we can drive to.

We're coming up from Tucson, so that's why I'm assuming te 3 hour drive... Shooting for next weekend. Any ideas??

  2. I put my kids in for a jr. elk hunt, and specified the $15.00 Hunt Only license. They got rejected, because i didn't see the note saying "not available through draw", and I had mailed a check. Lesson learned.

Does anyone know if this license is acceptable to use to apply for a jr. hunt, through the draw? Through the draw they only give you the option to purchase the youth hunt-fish combo for $26.50. Does that mean that you must purchase a combo to apply for jr, hunts?

I called the main G&F number, and after waiting on hold for 20 minutes, the woman couldn't even tell me if the $15.00 youth hunt license is acceptable to apply for the draw. She actually told me to ask the cashier at the sporting goods dept at Walmart!!

  3. My kids drew a couple of 5A cow tags at end of Oct.

I've had 2 great hunts up there several years ago, but totally different experiences on the same Oct cow hunt. One trip, wacked them 2nd day, practically couldn't avoid them. A few years later, same hunt, very few elk. I figured they were disturbed by so many back-to-back hunts, and we finally pulled 2 out of a canyon with a nasty pack-out.

I'm wondering if I should look further north of the rim, and get out in the open country in the mixed juniper stuff, if the elk have scattered.

My heart is in the tall pines, and it's nicer camping there, but I keep hearing people talking about getting out of the pines and glassing. I'm just not sure if it's appropriate before large snowfalls drive the majority of them lower.

Anyone got any thoughts or advice on this?
