Do you agree with G&F forcing kids to take Hunter Safety???

Yes! This is good for them and good for all the other sportsmen that are out there. Like others have said I think everyone should have to go through it at least once. I went when I was 10 in 1970 and then a few more times when my kids were old enough. I honestly didn't like going myself but it is important for them, a little refresher doesn't hurt anyone either. I've seen many adults in the field not following the basic's of Hunter Safety and have called them out on it. There has to be a minimum standard and I think Hunter Safety does a good job at that. Because some parents would never teach what is taught in the class, we need to have it for all our safety!

    Eberlestock J34 Just One Pack

Eberlestock does it again. The latest evolution of the famous J34 Just One pack says it all, “If you’re going to own just one hunting pack, you should make it a “Just One.” We get lots of calls asking for a pack that can be a 3-7 day pack in pack, meat hauler and a day pack! The Eberlestock J34 Just One pack is the one. Each year Glen Eberle the owner of Eberlestock, looks for small details to improve a continuous quest to make their products better. The J34 features a new streamlined shape, vertically adjustable torso length, waterproof zippers, a high-visibility interior (no more groping for a black flashlight in a black compartment), deep “3D” ventilated padding, scabbard drainage and cleanout access. Eberlestock nails it on the harness. Breathable and comfortable! The J34 has a suspension that is designed to move with your body, being a medium pack when downsized, makes it comfortable to wear as a daypack. The pack is supremely capable and comfortable under a heavy load. Try one and see why there’s a growing movement afoot in the hunting community that’s saying that the Just One is the best hunting pack ever built. J34 Can carry more than most men! Don’t be fooled by the thought that a “Day” pack can’t do it. Eric, my son, went out this morning on my daughter Stephanie’s Rut Elk hunt with about 1,500 cubic inches. Packed out the head, cape, and about 40lbs of meat plus his gear! This pack can expand to a little over 4600 cubic inches, then jump to about 7600 cubic inches when used with the Spike Camp Duffel for packing in. Watch my daughter Stephanie’s Elk hunt! Men your wife’s need to see this….. This pack is simple: made to fit right behind your torso for active hunting. It’s very compact and doesn’t protrude far from your body. So, it doesn’t get in your way. Then, when you have game down, open the pack up and start hauling meat. The tough, soft-finish (great for archery) camo packs have an exclusive ventilated mesh-fronted meat compartment, so your meat will be able to cool while you pack it. The latest model of the Just One family shares the essential features of all of the others in the line. It’s extremely versatile. Starting at an ultra-compact 2300 cubic inches. It expands to 4600 with its built-in Cam Expansionâ„¢ system. Add a Super Spike Duffel’s 3500 cubic inches, and get 8100 cubic inch load hauler. The photo below shows the full sequence: Quickdraw BackscabbardWith their Quickdraw Backscabbardâ„¢, you can reach over your shoulder and quickdraw your firearm, arrows from a quiver, etc. As with all of their packs, the Just One is hydration system compatible. The J34 weighs 7 lbs. 8 oz. It’s very comfortable as a daypack and as shown by the photos at the top of the page, is capable — and still comfortable — while hauling very heavy loads. The volume is variable from about 2300 cubic inches to a little over 4600 cubic inches then to about 7600 cubic inches when used with the Spike Camp Duffel. Cold Weather Base Layer

Any high quality Merino Wool. Comfortable, lightweight and will keep you warmest when moist. I use camo merino wool that way if it warms up I can shed the top layers. Good luck on your hunt!
  4. Are you refusing to pay $400 to $500 for a pair of boots like me? I am no different than you. There is no way a $400 boot can be that different. Well, I finally gave in after a nightmare hiking trip. We packed 15 miles into an Az wilderness looking for Monster Coues. I came out the other end with a twisted ankle, 8 black toenails and they all fell off. Took almost a year for them to all grow back. That was with a boot that was supposed to be the best. No, the boot wasn’t too small, the mountains were that nasty. I decided to try the Kenetrek Hardscrabble Hiker because I’ve heard of their top quality, comfort and I needed a boot that can withstand the rugged Arizona mountains to high desert. I needed a boot that can protected my feet with all the comfort I could get. The Hiker was named after the rugged mountain peak that is in Montana, and it fits. After 5 seasons, this boot “Stomps”, it is still going strong without any problems. The 7 inch Hardscrabble Hiker is not heavy like some. It has a thick 2.8 mm full grain leather uppers with heavily padded collars provide solid support with exceptional comfort. The traction of the K-Talon outsoles has stiff nylon midsoles that keep you from slipping in rough terrain, at first I thought was a joke, but its not! A hill I climb to scout elk is very steep and full of cinders, two steps up and one back. I felt a major difference on the first trip. My hunting buddy said bull, “Hey, that’s what I said”. You have to try it and he too was sold. Also, the waterproof, breathable Windtex membrane assures your feet stay dry. I like wearing with a light liner and then a good wool sock. If it is going to be cold out, I will just wear a heavy wool sock. In today’s boot availability I would place this boot at a number 9 out of 10. Only reason it didn’t get a 10 is because I have weak ankles and I needed the extra support with a higher boot, thus the reason for the next boot. We saw Crispi a few years ago at a show. Before committing to adding another line of boots, I decided to try out the Crispi Hunter HTG GTX. My first trip was on an elk hunt 2 years ago with my daughter. OMG! I know I said it, Oh my gun, Oh my goodness, Oh my gosh, whatever it means, my daughter would be proud of me! The comfort was so amazing. At the end of the day of hiking steep hills, traversing rugged river beds, and Arizona’s nasty desert country I was blown away at how much better my feet felt and never “Once” worried about twisting one of my bad ankles. I never thought the comfort level could ever go past the Kenetrek but this boot did. A little more weight but I will give that up for the strength it gave me in my WANKLES (wussy ankles) and the comfort. The Crispi Hunter Gore-Tex® Hunting Boot brings the best in class features. With a 400 grm to 600 grm equivalency insulated boot. Their exclusive ABSS (Ankle Bone Support System) which I love, CCF (Crispi Crossbow frame in the mid-sole), Gore-tex® Insulated Comfort Footwear Lining and a Vibram® Super-Grip outsole developed exclusively for Crispi. Just put them on and you can go for miles and miles of hard Hunting with no break-in time, I thought this too was a joke but its true. The weight of these boots are 2.03 lbs each, lighter, more stable and durable than some other boots on the market today, so why wear a heavy weight pair of boots? 100% waterproof, comfortable, designed and made in Italy (not China). You don’t have to hike 15 miles into a wilderness to get the full benefit of this boot. I wear it hiking, hunting and just working around the ranch. It is that comfortable. I will rate this boot as a 10 out of 10 until a better boot comes along! Don’t get me wrong Meindl, Hanwag, Lowa’s and a few other kinds of boot lover’s. They are all also all GREAT boots too. But if you are looking for the best of the best, we just choose to focus on what we feel is Premium Hunting Gear. Please feel free to share with us your thoughts as we enjoy hearing from you and because of you we found Crispi. If you feel there is a product we really need to check out please let me know. We do not just sell Premium Hunting Gear, we use them. See you in the field, Eric Santana The post Best Hunting Boots- Crispi and Kenetrek Stomp! appeared first on Santana Outdoors Blog. Hunting Blind kills Trophy Elk

Tim Means is a “Totally Blind” hunter that was helped by some very special friends last fall. Tim shot this elk at 175 yds. He uses a “red dot†type sight that his helper can see over his shoulder to guide him in for a shot. When he is on target the helper tells him and he pulls the trigger. Tim has also killed mule deer, white tail deer and turkey. If you don’t think that this is a “Trophy Elk†you need to try walking through the woods with a blindfold on and then shooting at something based on what someone tells you! To round the story out, Tim has been totally blind since he was 19 or 20. A few years ago he wanted to go hunting. A friend who hunts turkey and deer in Texas with blinds with feeders. They put Tim in a blind and over the next couple of years he shot 2 turkey with a shotgun using a laser sight; and then 2 doe deer, again with a laser sight. All from a blind in Texas. About 4 years ago he got a Kiabab CHAMP Tag and Friends Steve and Bob took him up there. On the second weekend they were successful and Tim shot a mule deer (doe) with the laser sight. This past year he drew a 6A CHAMP ANY ELK TAG. On opening weekend he got in on a small bunch of bulls; they stalked from about 300 yds.; and at about 175 he shot the Trophy Bull in the picture using the “red dot†sight with Steve looking over his shoulder to help him. Tim was truly like a kid when he called me that day. Now we are working on getting him a deer with archery tackle – a crossbow. Mounting a “red dot†type sight on it, we’ll try the laser too because we don’t need distance. Tim is a great guy and you would never know that he has a disability. A customer of ours Bill McLean shared this awesome story with us. I was blown away to hear that Tim has fought past his disability to enjoy the outdoors that I had to share his story. With permission to post. Congratulations Tim for taking a trophy elk and to all involved in helping a fellow hunter! Thank you Bill for sharing this story with us. 7. Most hunters are happy with being outdoors being with friends, family and hoping to fill the freezer. Others are trying to beat their last kill by getting one with a higher score. I have learned over the years it takes time, skill, preparation and most of all, lots of luck to harvest a wall hanger. So, we have come up with a new scoring method for Elk, deer hunter’s need to multiply by 0.50 , Antelope hunter’s need to .25. Add up your score and tell us what you got on your last hunt, Made a lasting memory with my family & friends up to 100 points Youth were involved up to 100 points Weather cooperated up to 50 points Nobody got hurt up to 50 points (no blood at all gets all 50) Vehicle or ATV didn’t break down up to 50 points Killed an animal (one that you had a tag for) 50 points Killed one shot 50 points (this means you probably practiced, or got lucky) Got it to the freezer 50 points Wounded an animal that you didn’t tag minus 100 points Drank too much minus 50 points Other stupid mistakes minus up to 100 points Based on our new scoring method I killed a 400 class bull (see below). #1 100 points, #2 100 points, # 3 50 points, #4 50 points, #5 50 points, #7 50 points = 400. What was the score of your last hunt? Lets get ready for the 2015 Hunting Season. The Arizona Elk & Antelope applications for a tag is due by February 10th, but don’t wait until the last day because every year the system overloads on the last day, not because of Game & Fish but because most of us are Master Procrastinators. If you need help in finding a good unit to put in for or need a guide, we can help you. Arizona is the top spot to hunt trophy elk on public land, and there is lots of it, so apply now. You can increase you chances of taking a big bull by using a recommended guide, but what is great about AZ, everyone that draws has the same opportunity. Need help Call us at 928-978-6139 and ask for me! Arizona Coues Whitetail –

Arizona Coues Whitetail Buck – We’re not looking for just any buck, but this one. After 4 different youth hunters and 5 years of trying to get this buck, Dalton did it. Congratulations to Dalton, his hard work, persistence and his dad, Mike. He took this buck at 550 yards and then carried it up the steep side of the mountain. I was blessed to be there! Hunting is not like it used to be. I remember hunting mule deer with my dad in the Hualapai mountains, no binos, no backpack and a 243 with a scope that might reach 250 yards. He said “There is buck mountain, I’ll meet you up on top, good luck son”! Padded me on my back and away I went. I soon developed my own deer hunting technique I call “Spook N Shoot”. Yeah, you spook them, whistle, then shoot. Rarely worked, but it was all I had. As I look back I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Today, we teach our kids to glass the game from hundreds if not thousands of yards away. In most cases we have time to think about what we are going to do. With the skills and talent that these kids have these days it is great to see how successful they have become. Either way, the old days way or now, to be able to pass on this wonderful gift of Hunting to our kids is awesome. It is one of the best ways build a lasting memory with them and a father son relationship that will last forever! 25. Many hunters, anglers and other outdoor recreationists have been wondering how the current federal government shutdown, which began Oct. 1, will impact their upcoming outings. Despite closures by federal land management agencies of their administrative offices and some controlled access points and facilities, there are numerous opportunities available to Arizonans for outdoor recreation. Please keep in mind that, with regard to federal lands, official information on closures is the responsibility of the respective federal land management agencies. The Arizona Game and Fish Department is providing this unofficial update as a service to constituents based on the best information we have available at this time, and that information is subject to change. Hunting Most Forest Service and BLM lands where hunting was previously allowed should still be open to hunting, as long as it is in accordance with Arizona hunting laws. Areas with controlled access points (such as developed recreational sites and campgrounds) may be closed. Be advised that federal wildlife refuges are currently closed, as are national parks under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service. Certain hunts begin this weekend in Arizona for turkey, quail, tree squirrels, ducks (mountain zone), and juniors-only javelina. Enjoy your hunt. Fishing Great angling opportunities exist at these waters: Lake Pleasant. The striper bite at this lake northwest of Phoenix is one of the state’s best right now. This is a great boating lake as well. Lake Pleasant Regional Park is under the jurisdiction of Maricopa County. Lake Havasu. It’s an ideal time to visit this 19,000-acre impoundment in western Arizona that’s a haven for stripers, largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. It’s very popular with boaters as well. Most of the busier launch sites remain open, and Havasu is a community that welcomes and caters to anglers. For more information, visit www.golakehavasu.com and see how to “Play like you mean it.†Alamo Lake, a 3,500-acre impoundment northwest of Wickenburg, is particularly excellent for largemouth bass, crappie and catfish. Urban Fishing Program waters in Phoenix, Tucson and Payson are excellent for fishing. Fall catfish stockings have resumed at the Phoenix and Tucson Urban Fishing Program lakes, and those lakes are being stocked again with channel catfish this week (Sept. 30-Oct. 5). Community ponds in Yuma, West Wetlands Park Pond, Fortuna Pond, Redondo Pond and the Council Park Pond in Somerton also are sure-fire fishing bets. In the Tucson area, Cluff Ranch, Roper Lake, Dankworth Pond and Patagonia Lake all remain open and are viable fishing options. Around Cottonwood, anglers can head to the lagoons at Dead Horse Ranch State Park, as well as to the Verde River. The striper bite has picked up in the Colorado River below Davis Dam, in the Big Bend area. In the Prescott Area, Fain Lake, Goldwater Lake, Watson Lake and Willow Creek Reservoir are options. It is the department’s understanding that an angler can still walk into Lynx and Mingus lakes from outside the locked gates (water is off and restrooms are locked.) Although Forest Service boat ramps are reportedly closed at Roosevelt, Apache, Canyon, Saguaro and Bartlett lakes, walk-in access is reportedly open at those lakes and on the Lower Salt River. Also, privately operated marinas and their launch facilities on those lakes are currently open, but some may involve fees. Call ahead to confirm. Boat ramp access to most lakes on Forest Service lands on the Mogollon Rim and in the White Mountains reportedly remains open at this time, but in the event this changes, walk-in access should still be available. Developed campgrounds and associated infrastructure (restrooms, trash containers) may be closed. Mogollon Rim creeks such as Tonto Creek are open, and fishing for trout in the fall can be excellent. Dispersed camping is still available on undeveloped sites. Arizona state parks, such as Lyman Lake State Park near St. Johns, Fool Hollow Lake in Show Low, and Patagonia Lake near Nogales are open for camping and fishing. All Arizona Game and Fish Department offices, shooting ranges, fish hatcheries, wildlife areas, and other department facilities and properties will remain open during their normal business hours. This is the most current information we have as of the time of this communication. Please use it as a guide, not a definitive listing. Also, it’s important for boaters and anglers to remember that, under Arizona law, individuals who take their boats out of waters designated as having aquatic invasive species must clean, drain and dry. This means wiping down your boat, pulling your plug and drying your watercraft and equipment for at least five days before launching your boat into a different body of water. In particular, more boaters and anglers may be using Lake Pleasant during this time, and it’s imperative that they clean, drain and dry their boats to help prevent the spread of quagga mussels to non-infested waters. Other quagga-infested waters are Lake Powell, Lake Mead, Lake Mohave, Lake Havasu, and all lower Colorado River waters to the international border with Mexico.
