  2. New Mexico Department of Game and Fish Media contact: Rachel Shockley, (505) 476-8071 Public contact: (888) 248-6866 rachel.shockley@state.nm.us FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, SEPT. 17, 2013: TROPHY BULL ELK FOUND DEAD, POACHING SUSPECTED ALMA – New Mexico Department of Game and Fish conservation officer KC Gehrt recovered a dead, world-class, bull elk outside of Reserve Sept. 4. Poaching is suspected. Hunters discovered the rotting, but completely intact, elk carcass in a canyon, a mile and a half east of Little Round Mountain. Hunters in the area last saw the massive elk alive Sept. 1. “It’s stealing,†hunter Jeff Lewis said. “The state lost a huge amount. That’s a once in a lifetime bull.†Lewis and his hunting partner Don Roach had been tracking and shooting video of the enormous elk for three years. “Up until this year, every time we would have an encounter with him he would disappear,†Lewis said. “But this year he was visible every morning and every night. We thought we would have a chance to have a stalk on him and have a chance to harvest. But the poacher must have seen him too. It’s really horrendous.†After examining the elk Gehrt was able to find what appeared to be trauma to internal organs, in particular to the tops of the lungs, which would be consistent with injuries caused by a small caliber bullet. Due to extent that the elk had decomposed, Gehrt was not able to find the bullet. “In the past, poachers have waited to return to an animal because they couldn’t find it or they were waiting to claim the animal when they had a hunting license,†Gehrt said. “That is what I suspect happened here. The wanton waste in this situation is sickening. It’s one of the reasons that trophy poaching should be a treated as a felony.†Gehrt measured the elk’s antler length to be 422.375 inches, shy of the Safari Club International (SCI) New Mexico Big Game Record of 437.625 inches (typical). Although archery season opened Sept. 1 in Game Management Unit 23, it is illegal to hunt elk with a firearm during archery season. If caught, the poacher could only face misdemeanor charges and potential civil penalties greater than $10,000 for the unlawful killing of a trophy elk this size. “This is an ongoing investigation,†said Gehrt. “We are following up on every lead.†One witness saw a silver Dodge pickup with dually-style rear wheels and New Mexico plates in the area around the time of the elk’s death. Anyone with information about this crime is urged to call Operation Game Thief toll-free, (800) 432-GAME (4263), or to visit www.wildlife.state.nm.us. Callers can remain anonymous and may earn rewards if information leads to charges being filed. The post Trophy Bull Elk Found Dead, Poaching Suspected appeared first on Santana Outdoors Blog. 3. Hunters may now submit their online and paper applications for the 2014 spring hunt draw for turkey, javelina, buffalo and bear. The deadline for all applications is Tuesday, Oct. 8, by 7 p.m. (MST). Don’t wait until the last minute, as technical issues can occur on deadline day. To apply online, go to www.azgfd.gov/draw and select the link for hunt applications. Paper applications may be hand-delivered to any of the seven department offices located statewide in Pinetop, Flagstaff, Kingman, Yuma, Tucson, Mesa or Phoenix, or mailed to the Arizona Game and Fish Department, Attn: Drawing Section, PO Box 74020, Phoenix, AZ 85087-1052. Mailed applications must be received by the deadline; postmarks don’t count. Draw applicants should be aware of the following important information: License and tag fees Hunters applying for the 2014 spring draw must use the current license and permit (tag) fees listed on page 4 of the 2014 Spring Turkey, Javelina, Buffalo and Bear Hunt Draw Information booklet (for those applying online, the online system automatically calculates the fees for you). The new license structure and license/tag fees do not go into effect until Jan. 1, 2014. New (only for this draw): Where to buy your license Licenses for the 2014 spring draw may only be purchased online, at department offices, or through the draw process. They will not be available at license dealers for this particular draw. You must purchase a 2014 hunting or combination hunting/fishing license in order to apply for the 2014 spring draw. New: The correction period for paper applications has been eliminated, beginning with the 2014 spring draw Due to decreasing participation in the paper application process and the availability of the online application system that virtually prevents applicants from making application errors, the Arizona Game and Fish Commission has eliminated the paper correction period starting with the 2014 spring draw. If you use the online system, you must pay the application fee and the fees for any licenses you purchase at the time of application. Credit and debit cards are the only forms of payment accepted for online applications. Once the draw takes place, and IF your online application was successfully drawn, the department will charge the credit or debit card you have on file for the permit (tag) fee. If payment fails, the department will make three attempts within two business days to contact you and notify you that your payment has been declined. You will then be afforded a means of providing alternative payment within a specified timeframe. If the department has not received an alternate payment at the end of that specified timeframe, applicants will be rejected. No exceptions will be made for individuals who do not respond to the department’s attempts to contact them. Deadline to update credit or debit card information: Sunday, Oct. 20 Applicants with new credit/debit cards, name changes or billing addresses may update the information on the credit or debit cards used for online applications and fees until 11:59 p.m. (MST) Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013. Forms of payment Online draw applications: Credit or debit card only (Visa and MasterCard). Paper applications (by mail or in person): Check or money order only. No credit or debit cards. No cash. Team Elk pack

Hello to all, thanks for all the comments and replies. It has been a while since I have been able to get back on to CWT and I apologize about that. We will be back on here for regular follow ups and posts. The latest ETA from Eberlestock on the western slope is late October 2013. Timber veil is available now, and we apologize for that inconvenience. It truly is an awesome pack, it has become my personal favorite. With the size, exterior frame, and archery/rifle capabilities it has so much to offer and is hard to beat. Carries an awesome amount of weight, and can easlily get you out there for 2 or 3 days at a time if packed right. Also makes the perfect day pack if thats all your after. Thanks again for the commentary.

    Seeking Predator Calling Tips

I have hunted predators here in Arizona for a number of years but I always like to talk with other people about what they do for success, and new techniques. For my first few years I had a wooden Carlton call that seemed to work out OK, I had success with it but not as much as I wanted too. After a few years I stepped it up to a Fox Pro wireless system, and havent had one ounce of luck with it. I estimate I had 30 to 40 stands with it, and never produced any luck. I was finding that they were coming in and stopping about 150 yds out when I would check the perimiter after a stand. Now I read and see success stories all the time of people having great luck with Fox Pr0 calls, perhaps there is something I am doing wrong with my techniques. I have only used a battery operated decoy a handful of times and it did not make much difference at all. Since then I have returned back to using mouth calls. I do use dead down wind, and I do keep remote calls 20 to 30 yds away from me. I dont usually call for longer than 5 to 6 minutes at a time before I head out to make another stand. Any information or assistance would be great. I am looking for helpful tips on both mouth calls and tips on using remote calls to increase my success. I would love to hear what products you use and what you have done to increase your success. Thanks again and I look forward to hearing from you. Rhett Connolly Santana Outdoors View the full article

    Seeking Predator Calling Tips

Hey guys, thank you for all the pointers, I really appreciate the help and the tips. This is exactly why I put this out for some help. I learned some things from a guy years and years ago and never really bothered to change up techniques. He was great with a call, he could have dawgs coming in within a matter of minutes, and after 8 to 10 minutes max he would move on. I always assumed that was the thing to do. I recall even reading the same information years ago, but now Im chomping at the bit to get out and try some of these tips you all offered. Gonna be a long haul til we get that cold snap....thanks again everyone. Rhett Connolly Santana Outdoors
