Seems like the Kaibab is really quiet this year? Update anyone

My buddies got these opening day in Kaibab (12AW): Wish I was there, sounds like it was an awesome hunt!

Let's see who posts first results.... With pics.

My buddy and his brother are up in Kaibab right now. Patiently awaiting results. -
I'm terrible at this game but I found him in thirty seconds!

I have a buddy whom I purchased an orange hat for, mainly for the purpose of keeping track of him when he has a rifle. I was able to pick him up with a pair of 10x50s last year from half a mile away while he took a hasty shot at the only coues buck we saw all week.

For your purposes the DPMS will be okay, but if it were me buying I'd spend the extra coin on a Colt. To clear some things up: Stop hanging out at m4carbine.net. A Chinese made AR would be a Norinco and non importable. Not quite. Study this chart for a second: With the election looming you might have a hard time finding parts in stock, but by far the best deal is buying a stripped lower receiver, lower parts kit, and slapping an upper receiver on top and calling it good. As far as uppers go Colt, BCM, Spikes, PSA, and Daniel Defense and tier one. Palmetto State Armory (PSA) was recently running a deal where they were offering a complete M4 style carbine built to milspecs with back up iron sights and an Aimpoint red dot on top for $1000. A grand!

That video cut out the best part of Shepard Smith's overreaction. That guy is a fruit!

Travel management - what are YOU going to do?
mp_moody replied to mtn-memories's topic in The Campfire
Exactly. I will and have continued to camp in my normal camping spot. -
Unless the price continues to drop, I doubt less than 1% of hunters will acquire and use thermal imaging in the field. There may be money in guides purchasing them as there would be a quick return in investment after a few successful hunts. Personally, if I could afford it I would be all over this. I sure as heck wouldn't tell you guys though.

That's why I threw out the disclaimer of "shot placement is key." Too many hunters blame the gun or the caliber for their poor shooting skills. I may catch some flak for this, but I see hunters who are poor shots decide to purchase barrel burners (300WSM, 338 Edge, etc) and take longer, less ethical shots on deer sized game.

I have the same tag. Have you only scouted the northern part of the unit? I haven't been scouting too much yet as it's still too hot. This is the very first time I've hunted deer in 20B, but I've spent a lot of time hunting coyote and javelina in there. I've seen them everywhere from Constellation to Lake Pleasant to Bumblebee. The key seems to be finding water. Once the weather cools down a little more I'll get out there. Send me a PM and we can compare notes.

What is the twist rate of your barrel? If 1/9" try to shoot some groups with 62 or 68 grain bullets. If 1/7" try 75 or 77 grain loads. I used a 55gr soft point on a javelina in February at 200 yards. I would have no problem using the same on coues. Shot placement is key. Edited to add: Try some Barnes TSX rounds.

I'm a 1911 fan, but this is just ridiculous. A ton of money dropped on garbage pistols: http://soldiersystem...ning-colt-guns/ When it's time to transition to pistol, the S has truly HTF. I want as many rounds as possible. There are much better modern pistols that hold more then eight rounds (Glock, FN, HK, etc).

20B rifle. My buddy and his brother both got drawn for Kaibab with one bonus point. Today is very emotional.

Two Javelina Bag Limit (under some circumstances)
mp_moody replied to 1uglydude's topic in The Campfire
I have a hard enough time finding one stink pig. -
I got a CC hit...looks like I am hunting desert mulies in 20B. No coues hunting for me.

This is one of those "find the coues" pictures.

Ban "TOXIC LEAD AMMUNITION" in the Kaibab
mp_moody replied to azmetalman's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
If they can successfully ban the type of ammunition, they won't stop in Kaibab. Next they will try Coconino, Coronado, etc. All they need is a foothold. -
Very nice buck, I've seen some monsters out in the desert. When do these guys start dropping those antlers?
-
I am using the Garmin 60CSX as well. I sometimes with I would have gone with the Garmin Rhino series for the built in FRS capability so I'm not carrying a GPS and radio.

Is this the summary of the issue? The map only shows what roads are open for travel/camping? If so, these new changes are going to be interesting. Where I camp there are a lot of weekend warrior types with their atvs, so I normally go further back until I don't see anyone for miles. I sure as heck won't be camping anywhere near any roads or people. Compliance to this tyranny is defeat, so I guess I will go east to Apache-Sitgreaves and spend my money in the neighboring towns. Hate to tell you but apache sitgreaves has got a plan just like this one. Not sure when it goes into effect. This is a Federal mandate to all land management agencies. BLM, National momuments etc. will be following suit. All National Forests are required to develope a travel management plan ASAP, so look for one in the forest near you. I can only speak for the Coconino and Kaibab they had plenty of open house forums and gave us plenty of time to voice our concerns. Go to the forest web site (google the forest your interested in and look for the plan) so you can voice your concerns. This is unfortunate that this is the first time I am hearing of these changes. I am sure this is news to others as well and I'm sure there are going to be a lot of ticked off people who receive warnings and/or citations because they didn't know. At this point it may be an uphill battle to reverse this.

Spent an hour and a half trying to confirm that I didn't get drawn, as this is the first year I applied for elk. Now I'm checking for my buddy.
