Bob, I had our mutual friend back to my cabin for hunting deer . We put him in a spot and then commenced a 'drive' . As the story goes, about 20 deer went by him as he was looking though his first pair of Swaros. The longest shot you will ever get on my property is about 90 yards.

Was real pleased ( not really pleased , you understand) to see a lot of standing dead oaks in 36B , an unending supply of firewood. Imagine my surprise when we brought the chain saw, bucked it up and put it on the fire.; What we found with the Oaks in our unit is that if the diameter is greater than 3" or so , it just smolders , no flame until you break it open with the poker. It is the densest wood I have ever encountered . Could not split it with a maul , no way , no how . The trees are in the Quercus family as are the oaks back east . I think it must be something environmental that causes the density. We do make use of the manzanita , which also been inn large supply due to drought / caterpillars. There is not much dead mesquite where we are. Anyway, on a scouting trip we bring a load of wood to last us the week and just supplement with the manzanita. Would like to hear if anyone else has encountered my experience with the oak.

My $.02 : being from New York , owning a share in 1500 acres in the Catskills and my property being about a half an hour away from oneshots. Hunters are: stewards of the land , trashers of the land ; ethical , unethical ; good shots , terrible shots ; hunters , trigger men. I have killed bucks in New York with .30.30 , .308 , .270, 30.06 and .44 mag . Most dropped where shot or went a very short distance . Shot placement . We do have stands , used to be 2x4 platforms with cut tree branch steps , now they are metal ladders stands that we can move and not worry about the safety every year. We do ' drives' , slow walks to a location to move deer to 'standers'. Back in the 60's a deer drive was done with hoot'in and holler'in by the drivers , meant to scare the deer out of their hidey holes , now it is more like still hunting your way to a spot , stopping , going through the laurel , just trying to get them nervous enough to move. We have on our property mountain laurel ( Kalmia latifolia ) that is 6' 8' tall that the deer will slide through and just disappear into. Just thought a dumb country boy (old man) from New York should be heard from.

Great job. Congratulations. Only recommendation would be the rifle , bolt open, facing away from Emily. These would be the words my father would be saying to me as one of the original NRA safety instructors.

Several years ago , my uncle moved to Az. from Florida where he was a groundskeeper. He renewed his interest in hunting and I took him south for the early hunt. I put him in a wooded location , lots of shade and deer sign. I went back later to get him and he said there was a coral snake in the tree he was standing by. I know he knew what a coral snake looked like from his 35 years in Fla. I still question what kind of snake it was , however , now I look at the trees as much as I look at the ground. It is hard to look for deer when I worry so much about our slithery friends.

Some years ago , I had a blow out on Summit Motorway and from that point on , I always had not only a spare but a 3rd tire with me. Since I have become a renter of trucks , I have been less than prepared. Lesson learned as when I pull out of Phoenix next Tuesday for the hunt I will have the added tire as well as plugs and fix a flat. The deer looked in great shape.

Time to do a little scouting and bring the firewood supply to our campsite for the early hunt. Woke my boy up at 3a.m,., loaded the truck , picked up my hunting buddy and left Phoenix at 4:05 for the Ruby Rd. Fueled up at the Plot Truck Stop and were on our way to the Ruby area. Water flowing ,tanks full and deer to be seen. 2 hours later we make it to our site and unload the wood and get back in the truck to hit some jeep trails to start glassing. Back in the truck to look at another area and the alarm bells in the truck are activated buy air leaking form the tire. Certainly not the first flat we have had in the Arizona desert. Change the tire , put on the 'temporary spare' ( and they do mean temporary) , go back to the campsite and rebuild the fire pit , do a lunch and then head out for home. ( 5 hour trip from site to house) . We had gone about 1 mile off the 4 miles that we were from the Ruby Rd,. when the 'temporary spare' blows out. Curses and decisions. I decide to try to limp the truck back to the Ruby Rd. on the blow out as the 3 more miles are mostly uphill. A slow trip to be sure , however we made it to the top and were on the road for less than a minute and a couple of ladies out for a ride looking for a 'ghost town' pulled up ( it was 1 hour and 47 minutes after I left with the ladies that the next person came oolong on Ruby Rd.). After a few moments of talk , the said they would take me and my tire back to the truck stop .I leave my son and buddy with the truck and an hour ride and I am at the truck stop making calls for road service repair of a tire . Out of the 7 calls I made , the closest I got to help was ' I might be able to come in 2 hours or so , let me call you back' . I' m still waiting for the call. As I'm making the calls from a table in the Wendy's, a guy says ,'if you get it fixed ,I'll drive you back to your truck. I thank him and keep working through how I'm going to get the tire fixed. The light switch goes on and I buy a can of fix a flat ( only a puncture in this tire) , still leaking , I wonder if they have plugs ? Yep, buy the plugs , install it , fill with air and woohoo, it's holding. I go back insider Wendy's and ask if the guy ,Steve, was serious about taking my an hour out and an hour back to get men back to my truck. He says absolutely. I tell him we have ten miles of blacktop and ten miles of bad dirt road. No problem. He says 'let me unhook my trailer. Did not know I was throwing the tire in his Freightliner and going for a ride.I must say , the Ruby Road has probably seldom if ever had a semi on it.Got the tire on , went back to Pilot with my new best friend Steve and offered him a generous amount of dollars for his help and he said ' This ones on me. Got home last. Nite at 10 p.m. and pleased to have that happen. Just another hunting story. I will try to attach a photo of the semi later today.

Bob, Thanks for the cooking props. You are always welcome in our camp. oneshot, yes , I am in 3K , Sullivan County, we do not have the farms and corn crops that Orange County does. I hunt 1500 acres that I own with some other guys. Our deer herd is declining over the years . I still love the woods and getting that buck is only a part of it. As a kid growing up on an apple orchard in Ridgebury, it was a treat to see a deer . At that time if we went to the cabin in Sullivan County and rode around the block , you couldn't count them all. Now it has reversed . Go figure. My grandfather spoke about the 1930's in Sullivan where you were fortunate to see 'a' deer. This is why they named it 'hunting' and not 'killing' jim

oneshot, I've got my plane tickets for the 3rd week of the New York season . NY reduced the non Res. license to $100 this year , a drop of $40 and it includes the small game license as well. I think they included the bear tag as well which used to be another $50. Not sure the motivation to add another couple of weeks to the bow season . Jim

Casey, Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings. The memories will always be there. I was lucky enough to have my grandfather into his 90's and when he passed , I got his model 14 Remington that he purchased new in 1916 . I take 'Grandpa' for a walk every hunting season and it brings back all of the times we shared. I feel blessed that I had a man in my life who left a lasting impact.

I would appreciate comments on what would be a right price for approx. 4 year old EL 10x42's ( not 'rang3e' or swarovision) and would you choose these over the vortex viper hd ? Thank you for any input.

I see that the license fees are posted on the AZGFD site. If i am reading it correctly, an out of state hunter must by a combo ( hunting and fishing) license for the price of $160. Is this correct?

Bob, Hope the temps are rising for you. New York non res is $140 for the deer tag plus $50 if you want a bear tag. Just know that the price increase is a whole lot more than the COL increase. Jim

Ok , I often go off a bit premature. 2013 Hunting license out of state - $151.25 2014 Hunting/Fishing license out of state - $160 Mea culpa, no big deal 2013 Permit tag fee - $232.75 2014 Permit fee tag - $315 includes $15 app fee Approx. 25% increase in a year.

Got to say that it is absurd to have a hunter who only comes to hunt, buy a fishing license. Feels like a money grab , even more so than making the out of staters purchase a non refundable license fee when not drawn. I would love to know the reasoning behind this .

Finally made the 5 hour trip south to the unit, deer in good supply . Pena Blanca lake closed , campground on Ruby Road closed due to the govt. shut down. Border patrol on Ruby Rd. almost non existant , no hunters scouting , just a cloudless quiet weekend . Biggest surprise , tank near our campsite bone dry , first time in 20 years. No doubt the next 17 days are going to fly by. I'm ready . J
