My favorite pack. Small enough for light day hike and strong enough to hump elk quarters out. Add the scabbard and go hands free. Anyone in need of a pack will be happy with this one

So some of you may remember my previous post over the past three years about this one deer that I've chased for the past three years. I started bow hunting three years ago, and glassed up this one buck in my first season. I thought wow this is easy. Three years later I've had a tone of fun with this buck, but he or his ladies bust me every time. I find him in the same bowl canyon every year. Tons of exit avenues for him and of course same with entry points. Good mix of dense cover and open spots and the dang wind swirls like its at the hand of witches. Over the years Ive set cameras and never seen him in the non rut season, I think he comes off a large mountain a couple miles away. he's is a mule deer. at around 4500 ft. Juniper country. I usually spot and stalk, and I'm getting a lot better but I still suck. I've tried to pattern him so I could ambush him but there are no patterns. There are a couple directions I've seen him come from but its still random. So I'll be out this weekend to look for him, hunt doesn't start in the area until 1/1. I hope he made it through the year. Couple questions. Do most of you think I should stay with the spot and stalk? its more fun. But I think I'd have more success on an ambush. just don't know where to set. Also, I have a few areas in the bowl I like to set up from, one is kinda in the middle and I'm afraid if I go in under dark I'll bust the whole bowl. Any thoughts on coming in grey light and glassing my way into a middle spot vs going in blind in the dark? I can also glass from the higher canyon wall on first light and then make my way in. I really want to get to this middle knoll because there are good cuts for me to work out of in all directions to stalk. but its lower so I lose some advantage there. anyway, just fishing for any tips from experienced hunters. I cant wait to get out again and chase this deer. I hope he make the season

does approaching from top or bottom ever make a big difference? or is wind and cover primary? I think I could deal with just him its the 6 to 9 does he's running with. I think I'd have a better chance if I could hunt him in December during early rut. last couple years by jan he has had a good crew already

Like to get a better look at the rack in the back

Have taken all three of my boys on that hunt. Love it. Great job. Smart to wear orange on that hunt. Lots of anxious kids up there

Can you pull bullets form factory ammo and try to figure their load? I have a buddy in Tucson and he has a new 257 wby. Saw mine last year and liked the shoot I know all rifles shoot differnt but I sent him some loads that work for me and they were less them impressive. Nothing to even work with Then. He bought the cheapest weatherby factory ammo and they shot decent. At least as starting point Looks like 100 grain spittzer bullet and I thought I'd call weatherby and ask what they use for powder Am chasing ghost?

If you bigger and I don't think you should look at a 7mm-08. Soft recoil. Ballistics a bit less then 270

How many rounds on 257 down the pipe before burn the bore on average

Yea I think he'll shoot factory I been using rl 25 wih hdy 117 and imr 4831 with Barnes ttsx 100. And they work great for me. I may try H1000 after the season just to play with some new loads. Maybe accubond 110
-
Yea up against it. Our hunt is in a couple weeks. We started the process to late to find a good load for him

I'm only a couple years into reloading. Are they really that different? I'd be loading them in my 257 Wby -
I have a tikka in 243 my son used 95 gr sst for a couple nice mule deer. I love tikka rifles and think they are extremely accurate out of the box Not sure the sst is the right bullet for an elk though. Maybe use this load for nosler accubond It should be close Imr 4831 40.5 gr col 2.630 Also shot the Sierra game king well in 85 g Imr 4451 42 gr 2.650 I have a buddy that shoots one too and might have some heavier loads I'm not going to say the 243 won't work but I would suggest a stout bullet. Maybe a Barnes ttsx would work.

Pulled these out of the house we just move into. Owners that left them said they are 8 years old and they paid $500 for each one. They moved to NJ so didn't want to haul them Westinghouse and frigidaire are the brands I'm in north Phoenix Open to trades even if I have to put some cash in to make up what you have in trade

These scopes are great. Clear and rock solid. I own two and they compare with my viper and vx 2 If you need a scope don't pass in these.
-
I'd suggest you build a nice sturdy reloading table and post pic as a demo. I bet you'd get some interest

Cabelas has racks near the gun library and they have Thompson Venture rifles for $375. Lots of options. All. New. I own one in .243 and it's one of the most accurate shooters for a stock out of e box rifle. It is heavy and the bolt is stiff but it shoots Throw a vortex diamond back 4-12 on there and he is just over budget for a nice shooting brand new rig
