    Understanding Antler Reproduction.....

If you look close that's actually two different Coues. Both are nice bucks. Elk and Coues shed at different times of the year? Not exactly sure what your question is geared around in that aspect. In a given herd usually the older age class animals shed first. With young animals carrying antlers for a lot longer. Sometimes it strictly depends on the exact animal. Some shed early while some do late. Also generally speaking the farther north you go the earlier they shed. For instance the mule deer on the strip start rutting in mid November and shed earlier than the mule deer in southern Arizona that don't rut until mid to end December into January. Coues tend to shed end of April and throughout may.

    Desert sheep taxidermy habitat

Bill V. I have not seen a commercially made cholla that looks even remotely worth a darn. The only Good ones are molded from the actual plant which obviously is a time consuming poky job. Basically pull all the spines off and cast the fleshy portions. I would think you could get away with only doing a few different sized ones and still be able to make a substantial plant. If your interested in attempting something like that shoot me a PM and we can discuss further.

Nevada proposing to ban Trail Cameras

I have been thinking about how to type out what is in my mind. I think TINES hinted on it. I have had many discussions with people about this as well. Some may disagree and that's fine. I have said many times before I will be the last guy to chastise anyone for going out and harvesting a deer. I absolutely love seeing successful happy hunters. BUT picking off the oldest age class out of the herd makes the most sense in my mind. How much time does a 7 or 8 year old deer really have left vs the 2 or 3 year old. If you had the perfect herd of animals and look at it in a pyramid chart. Taking that top little portion ensures that the next age class has the best chance to move up. Now that will never really happen in the grand scheme of hunting on public land. But if I can take that top most oldest buck I am effecting the herd the least and ensuring the best chance for another animal to replace the one I took. Cameras ARE an essential tool for judging and picking out those animals. I personally am not going to shoot an up and coming deer when I know there's an ancient old thing there somewhere. People will call it "trophy hunting". I was watching a Steve Rinella (?spelling?) show the other day. He mentioned how much he hates that term. While some people do in fact only hunt for scores I think you would be surprised at how many of us guys that chase "big" bucks are primarily chasing AGE!!!!! There's something different about an old fat sneaky buck and being able to harvest him that trips my trigger. As mentioned above simply getting a picture of one does not insure that it will be any easier to take him. Anyway..........there are definitely more sides to the argument than I want to really get into. But that's my main one.

Nevada proposing to ban Trail Cameras

So are you guys saying that if they ban cameras that there are going to be "more" animals to chase????? Or that if they ban cameras less animals will get killed so G and F can put out more tags????? Or you thinking success rates will go down so they will decrease tags???? Yeah right. Or that if they ban cameras you are going to kill a bigger animal??? Or that banning cameras will make people work harder???? ??????????????????????????? Trust me when I tell you...........all you guys that think banning cameras is going to keep the good outfitters from killing big animals are in for disappointment. That really seems to be the main point behind most of the " in favor of banning" themes. So many outfitters use soooooooo many it's unfair. LUAGH OUT LOAD!!!!

Nevada proposing to ban Trail Cameras

^^^^^^. I'd like to know the reason "WHY" as well. Are my cameras hurting your hunting???? I think I've personally killed 18 coues. Helped my wife kill another 7. Only had motion camera pictures of 1 of those. Out of all the coues I have helped kill only had pictures of 2 of those. I have lost count on total number. But it's over 15. Have I tried to kill animals I have had pictures of. OH YEAH. And I have failed miserably before. Would it hurt my hunting to loose cameras. You bet. Most of the time they are tools that allow me to mark certain areas off the list and move on. Occasionally they turn me on to a particular animal but it has been very rare. Lots of times I use cameras after I have found a particular deer. For the sole purpose of up close photos. How many times have we seen posts of all the pictures of deer and the person asking for advice and actually never killing the deer?????? They are tools. Having a picture doesn't mean certainty to a kill. Are there cases where the only reason a certain animal was found is because of them. YOU BET. Would all you people wanting them gone have had the chance to kill that animal if it wasn't found with a camera. Odds are almost 100% NOOOO! So in all reality what will banning them help or end up better. In my opinion nothing because the people who are good at hunting depend on soooo much more than cameras. It will weed out a few people that only rely on it. I don't doubt that. What might it hurt. As mentioned above many people simply love the joy of recreation with kids/family/friends for the sure enjoyment of getting out in the field. It could have an impact on the generous amounts of money that come in from auction tags. Whether you are for them or not there is no doubting it is a huge income for wildlife conservation. For reason sake (and because the point was made about cost) it could hurt the guy that can only afford a trip or two out preseason to hang a few cameras for him to gain some scouting knowledge for his hunt. Just some things to think about.

    Guide Schools

Im not entirely sure what a guiding schools you mention could actually teach you other than the main use of horses/mules. While that is a big major skill I don't think it has anything to do with actually killing animals. The undertaking involved with getting into that style of hunting is very expensive. I have taken quit a few people out scouting/hunting. Shown them some techniques etc. Does that mean that they are any better at hunting. I am not really sure. In some ways yes, in others no. My thoughts are you really need to be GOOD at hunting before you attempt actually guiding someone. I have a pretty good track record when it comes to coues deer yet I am still uncomfortable guiding people, I have actually done quit a bit of guiding myself. I love hunting especially for Coues. It is my ultimate passion. But speaking from personal experience it really is a big undertaking. Like mentioned above.......would you hire yourself to guide you. What would be your expectations of your "guide" when you show up for a hunt? Bottom line for me personally is that I would want to be guided exactly like I hunt for myself. Basically knowing that I am hunting a specific animal. Showing up to hunt with a guy that randomly takes me out to places hoping to get lucky??? NOT MY STYLE!!! What that entails is an exceptional amount of scouting and pre-preparation. Knowing places and ANIMALS inside and out. Knowing that their is actually an animal there that is "worthy" of taking. Thats a TON of work IMO. Being able to put in the effort to make someones hunt a success really is more than a lot of people think. If you are worried about taking time away from family, you already have a big negative towards the occupation simply due to the reasons I just mentioned. To me it sounds like you would be more in line to being what most people these days call a helper/spotter. While a lot of people frown upon it, there are some outfitters that are looking for people good at glassing and locating game to strategically put in places to do exactly that. Help by covering some certain chunk of country. Doesn't entail much pre-knowledge/time/commitment other than showing up. Simply stated 'we want you to go "here"' and glass for the day and report your findings. Obviously there is still some skill required but it gets you in the game of the guiding world and would give you the opportunity to see more of what its all about. Again to me......There are people that are inherently good at hunting and actually are "qualified" to guide. Does that mean you kill the biggest scoring animals year in and year out? Not necessarily.......But you need to really be good at hunting before you actually decide to take people out to do the same. Just my 2 cents.

    Archery 27????

Some Published INFO?!?!?! I can go check it out. Thank you Alpinebullwinkle!!! I am sorry that I do not believe everything I read/see on the Internet. I have simply asked multiple times for some proof and that was all. I don't have the time or need/want to go dive in and find info about elk numbers myself. With you being so In tune to that I figured you would be able to put me right on the goods. My last posts under this topic are a bit harsh. My apologies. I truly am asking you for the data so I can look at it. I'll quit harassing you! I still believe that 27 and 1 are some of the best elk hunts there are! On a side note I had the late November 27 rifle bull elk tag this last fall. The first day myself/brother-in-law/and hunting buddy glassed up 35 bulls. The second day We saw 46 or 47bulls. Killed on the third morning.

    Antler repos

They come out of the mold white usually. You can get different colors of the plastic. But most use the white. Then for some reason a lot of people paint on that yellow color. Then a little brown over it. There's lots of options but I've never understood the yellow tint to start.

    Antler repos

I don't think they turn yellow. They generally had the yellow tint to start.

  24. Greatly depends on the deer. Very few will "explode" as mentioned but it happens. For instance the Kenny Ball (spell?) buck out of 33 was around 132 I believe the year before (sheds were found) and when he killed it was 154? Or something. McDermotts auction buck from this year was roughly 130 last year and 166 SCI this year. I'm not sure on auction buck that Mr Mullins guided but it seems to have added a lot the year they killed it based on the few pics I have seen of the sheds. The real problem in expecting that is that it takes a phenomenal deer in the first place to actually explode. Generally speaking where that explosion comes from is from an already gargantuan deer. Who would let a 130 walk to see if he puts on 30" the next year. Odds are very few deer will ever get that big or even have the potential. Obviously with the experience explained from above most deer don't. 90 to 105 is all some will ever be. Based on the amounts of tags actually handed out makes that potential even smaller. Does it happen yes! But how many out of the thousands of deer that are out there living does it happen too! Comparison being how many Andre the Giants, Arnold's, Larry Fitzgeralds, or Rhonda Rouseys are there???? Not many. Capturing, documenting, and being able to experience something like that is truly a special thing.
