Massage wet black mud into the antlers... leave the tips a little white/mud free if you prefer whiter tips. Use a hard wire brush after a day or so and wire brush all the mud off. Then repeat any lighter spots massage more wet black mud again, let dry for another day or two. Then brush all the mud and dirt off. At this point they should have a dull dark look. What I like to do is use a wet rag and run the damp somewhat wet rag over the entire antler spreading the mud/color a bit. Let that dry for a bit. Then last I dab an old soft cloth with tung oil and rub this tung oil into the antlers all over. This brings out the color and gives it a real nice finish and natural look. I attached some pics: the first match set as it lay... you can see very bleached white. And the 2nd pic after using the mud (on the wall with fake mountain mikes skull). Looks better in person and i maybe couldve used more oil in some of the still dull spots. The shed set match to the far left was also white and used mud. Hope that helps. Maybe ask your buddy first also.... unless your confident he'll appreciate it. I've had taxidermists boil out skulls for me then stain the antlers which I did not want and some looked like crap using stain.

Congrats to the hunter... what an awesome adventure and lion. Doesnt matter male or female. A downed lion is a good lion. Dont let the immaturity of one forum member bring down the awesomeness of your hunt. I'm not surprised that a 22yr old punk kid is mouthing off on this forum about what he thinks is right or wrong just because he's been on a few lion hunts. Eventually he'll come to realize... maybe 10yrs from now with a bit of maturity.. that there is a time and place for debating certain things. Harvesting a lion is a once and a lifetime opportunity for most of us and I bet most of us would take that chance male or fem. Bonecollector... whether you're right or wrong, you need to chill out. You do your thing and everyone else will do their thing. You dont need to hijack a thread and start a debate over something so stupid as killing a male or female... or over any little thing you disagree with...Whether lions kill 150k deer or 5k deer or antelope just realize this hunter is within his rights.... so why ruin his moment..? Well, i've had a goal for a few years now to call in a bobcat and finally did it yesterday. Set up in some bouldery juniper country and set out turkey feathers on a stick that i rigged just a few days ago. He came in steady pace just zoned in on the feathers... wouldnt even take his eyes off them. Shot'm at about 10 yards in front of me and dropped in his tracks. This bobcat came in in less than one minute... Everyone talks about how long they can take to come in.... I must've set up right on top of this one. Fox few weeks ago, cat, and dark colored yote and plenty of calling season left!

I'm more excited about the jalepeno popper chip dip and bacon wrapped shnitzels I'm going to make tomorrow than the superbowl.... Dont care either way who wins. would've liked to see the Vikes in it.

Nick... if you're talking about the archery hunt your hunt ended yesterday.... 1/24 thursday. If you're talk'n about a Jr. hunt it starts today 1/25 friday... Correct me if I'm wrong though these are the only Pig hunts I know of other than the rifle hunt which is in late Feb. Be careful and check the regs before your hunts. Stiff fines... unless you have some odd tag I dont know about.

Snapshot... so you're saying this is a "theory you believe to be true" and that the Govt orchestrated the killing of 26 people just to ban guns which would never happen because of this event anyway.... Or raise your kid properly, spend time with him/her, get involved in activities and the chances of your child doing something like this drastically decrease. I'm not so sure about that Hawkeye..... pure ignorance? I've seen quite a few posts on this thread already from Ex-union members that say they would never work under a union again and are totally against them (They have experience..whats yours?) I think they probably know what they are talking about. My wife is in a union under a govt contract and it is an absolute scam. They take a significant portion of her paycheck every 2 weeks and in return she hasnt seen any raises or anything significant to speak of that actually helps her.....The only reason she is paying dues is so she can vote however there is a good chance she'll be getting out as the union has been worthless. When the union came in they had all sorts of promises about great things they would do....Seems like a racket to me. She was employed with this company before union..and now few years after union take over no real difference other than they have a lot of our money which does end up going to obama campaigns. So... to the folks "spouting all this anti union crap" as Hawkeye says I guess we're all just "idiot" fox news lovers that dont have a clue - LOL. Maybe you should get a clue. My thoughts are in some industries yeah... unions can really help a guy like in Evans case... but I feel the majority and overall impact of them is very negative on business and thus I support right to work.

I used to stain antlers and wont ever do it again. The best way to duplicate real brown antler is using mud in my opinion. (If you think about it what makes an antler brown? deer/elk rub their antlers into dirt/trees/mud/etc.. this gives them much of their color) And I've now used mud on probably over 30 antlers. I learned the technique from another post on this forum... if you search for it you'll find it. Get a bucket of black dirt and mix water and make some mud. Rub the mud all over the antlers going a little light with mud on the tips if you want the tips whiter. Wet mud and muddy water massaged into the antler is the key. Let that sit for a day or two then take a wire brush and brush off all the clumps of mud. Then repeat, massage mud and muddy water into the antler again and let sit til it dries out. Usually two times is enough if your thorough. After doing this a few times the last step is key. Now they look brown like mud, sort of a dull mud color but still not natural. Make sure you get all the clumps and mud texture wire brushed off. Get yourself a pint of Tung Oil from home depot or Lowes. Use a cotton rag or old t shirt and rub some tung oil into the antler all over and it will give it that darkened fresh brown antler look. Go heavier with the tung oil at the bases of the antler and lighter on the tips. Let that oil melt in for ahwile and if still not dark enough rub some more tung oil into the antler all over or in spots that need it. dont pour oil over it, rather rub it in with cloth which is important. It's a dirty process but turns out the best in terms of looking real. white tail deer antlers are a little tougher because they dont have the same texture as elk/mule deer antlers. WT are smoother so the mud doesnt get into the grooves as well but they still turn out nice. I've done elk antlers that were completely white for myself and others that now look like fresh brown sheds. I can post pics if you want to see what the result looks like. Many taxidermists will try to stain your antlers and you get them back way too dark and sometimes even black.... stain can work if used properly but you get a glossy look to it also. Mud gives that natural look and the tung oil just gives it a little gloss. Good Luck.
