My unit 9 bull **New pictures and story added**

Congrats again Casey on a beautiful bull! I know you were a little disappointed in shooting early but with the horn growth this year and weird rut you did good by taking that beautiful bull when you did! Lots of folks up there right now kicking themselves for passing bulls like that early on! Great job bro, you know your Grandpa is proud!!!! JIM>

Is anyone calling them in right now?

Where i've been i've had better luck bugling and raking a tree with a shed antler. There are still lots of bulls checking out the competition and they'll come in to size you up. If the bull already has cows it's more likely he'll grab his cows and move off to put distance between you and his girlfriends. In that case you have to run in and challenge him to take a stand but that's hard to do and more likely ends up in a desperate race you won't win. It's been a weird year for sure where I've been. Elk in Pinyons/Junipers

LOL! Not sure if you did or not, but you gotta first let them know that you are a bull coming in before raking a tree less than 50 yards from them! While sneaking in to do that, I'll let out some lazy short bugles to sound like a bull wondering in to find a bed next to the herd bull and his cows. That way the herd bull is already thinking you are a bull and is intently listening to how close you may come to his girlfriends. When you get in his comfort zone and start raking that usually is the trigger that upsets him and makes him come in to push you away. This also is usually best done when the herd is calm and stationary in the bulls bedroom. Disclaimer…this doesn't always work, but if you play it right it can make for some seriously intense and close action!

    Finally My Turn!

I do have mixed emotions about how fast it happened. I had an elaborate backpack hunt planned and was super excited about the adventure to come. Because of a late start out of town the night before we ended up hitting Plan B just for the morning and that's where it all happened. I never even unloaded my truck or set up camp! I never saw a bull in person or on camera bigger than this bull throughout my scouting and I never knew about this bull, so with that I had no problems tagging out early on him! JIM>

    Finally My Turn!

LOL! Seriously, when I walked up to that thing It reminded me of when I walked up to my Yukon Moose! I've never seen a bigger bodied bull or a larger head on an elk! If Bigfoot rode one, this was it! Ha! More to come, thanks again all! JIM>

    350 bull down

Awesome bull congrats! You and I killed about the same time yesterday! Kinda bitter sweet getting done basically before it even starts but can't pass up bulls like that! Great job! JIM>

    Big sweets or....

We killed a 117" close to where i heard Sweets lived and it had similar characteristics as Sweets, the genetics are strong there for sure! The video shows some serious landmarks in the background and i haven't had time to sit down and edit it all out. Hopefully soon life will slow down a bit so i can get back into the swing of things here and get a video together.

    Big sweets or....

I'd have to go with Couezilla Recent official measurement is 143 4/8" as is broken and currently #9 SCI. That G2 was actually shattered when the bullet exited the shoulder and hit it. I didn't realize that until reviewing the video later and some of the pieces of that tine were found but not enough to piece it together. He was close to the 150" mark intact but I don't think he hit it, probably 148"ish….but who cares!!!! Look up "monster" in the dictionary and there should be a picture of Couezilla there!

    What arrows to use

I had 9 first choice but pretty sure i was still a couple points shy of a guaranteed tag there, so probably drew second choice, either way gonna be a great tag! I'm not sure what head I'll settle on this year but in the past I've seen good results with Thunderheads, Muzzy's and Wac'ems. Any heavy, fixed, razor blade head will do fine as long as you tune your setup so they fly accurately and consistently.

    What arrows to use

It's been both, good and bad shots, and like creed said, punch both lungs and no problem but there are better options. Basically use the sharpest broadheads you can find and the G5's aren't them! Lots of folks use the G5's and that's why I've seen a lot of scenarios play out with them, more bad than good.

    What arrows to use

Congrats on the tag! I too finally pulled a tag and have the exact same bow as you. Accuracy is the most important thing, if you shoot that bow well and are confident with it, keep it. Use a heavy arrow and stick with fixed blade 100gr heads, but throw those Montecs in the trash! I've seen more bulls lost or almost lost with G5's than any other head! If you insist on using the G5's, sharpen them as sharp as you possibly can get them…even then they won't be as sharp as a razor but they will be better. Best of luck! JIM>
  18. I'm laying here in the hospital bed looking over at my beautiful wife and even more beautiful new baby daughter Ariel! We all thought with earlier complications that Ariel would come earlier but she appearantly got cozy in there and lasted 2 days shy of 40 weeks! She is absolutely perfect and i can't believe God trusted me with her, i won't let him down! Thanks again everyone for the kind thoughts and prayers!

    Life Is About To Change!

Howdy all! I've been wanting to post something for a long time now but as you'll soon learn priorities for me have changed drastically these past 37 weeks! As some of you have noticed, I haven't been on here near as much as I used to. I'm always checking in via my phone but rarely can take the time to sit down at the computer and log in. I wanted to apologize again to those who have received late reply's to emails and PM's, thanks for your understanding! Brief background… My wife and I have always thought having kids of our own was not a possibility, we didn't go thru all the tests with the doctors but enough to know odds were stacked against us. We both felt adoption must be God's plan for us so that was the road we were getting ready to go down, but then she got pregnant last December!!! We were SO excited, but unfortunately our excitement lasted just several weeks and she had a miscarriage. Losing that opportunity was devastating for us both as we felt it may have been our one shot at it. With new hope that at least it was possible for us to get pregnant, our Doctor put us on meds and a schedule and in no time, 36 weeks and 4 days ago we got pregnant again! This time everything has been perfect, with the exception of some pre term contraction issues back in November which put ALL of my hunting on hold, but it's been worth it! So basically, for those that have wondered where I've been, I've been watching life make an AMAZING change! I'm extremely excited, extremely scared, and extremely blessed all in the same moment! The due date is Feb. 5th but the Doc recently said the baby is in position to come any day and if so everything will be fine!!! We are having a girl and her name will be "Ariel". We decided on that name because it means "Lion of God", or a person who brings people to God and she has definitely brought my wife and I closer to God and are so appreciative and blessed! So there it is, I'm still around and soon I'll be blowing up this site with "Proud Papa" posts and stories about this next chapter in my life! Thanks all and hope this next year is a great one for everyone! JIM> Here's my favorite recent pic, Drake seems to know what's up, he's gonna be a great "Big Brother"!

    Life Is About To Change!

Thanks again everyone for the great comments! Baby Ariel is still in the oven and we are now 37 weeks and 2 days! Because of our first experience I was very careful to not get my hopes up for the first couple months. I was counting down each day during the first trimester and have been marking each milestone ever since! The 37 week mark was a big milestone that I prayed we would make it too and here we are! I know it's better to hit 40 weeks but I'm ready for her now! Ha! I'm gonna take the wife out for mexican food tonight…I've heard that can speed things up! LOL! Thanks again everyone! BTW, Derbiv aka Derek! HA! I can't believe you remembered that story bro! Thanks bud! JIM>

    Life Is About To Change!

Thanks so much for your awesome reply's and prayers everyone! I was hesitant for a long time to post anything about this, I just felt it was maybe too personal, but a lot of you here are friends of mine or at least folks that I admire and respect and I wanted to share it with you all. I'll definitely keep you all updated on how it goes and hopefully soon will be introducing my new hunting partner! Thanks again everyone! JIM>
  22. Awesome pics guys! CouesPursuit, that's a great name for your boy! My best friend is a Black Lab by the same name! I don't have the time to hunt ducks like I used to with my old hunting partner "Zeus" so I never introduced Drake to it. I didn't want him to know what he was missing out on! He get's a kick out of shed hunting and scouting with me tho!

    Happy Birthday JIM!!!!!

Thank you for the kind wishes! Life has been so hectic lately I forgot my birthday was coming up so I had nothing planned! Typically if I'm not in MX at the time, I'll take myself out deer hunting, actually i do that in MX too! Ha! But, this year my day consisted of work and daydreaming about flingin' arrows at bucks! A VERY pregnant wife has put a hold on all my hunting activities for the past couple months which has me going crazy! Thanks again for the birthday wishes, I appreciate it! JIM>

    Couezilla!

Hey all, doing this from my phone so gonna try and keep it short for now just wanted to share this with you all. I'll share more details and pics soon. My friend Ian had purchased one of the Coues auction tags this year and our team has been working very hard to come up with a "special" buck for him. I've been insanely busy this season with a new business, a very pregnant wife, and multiple hunts to juggle so I've had to rely alot more on our small team of family and friends this year and everyone has done a great job, especially with Ian's Coues hunt! We've hunted a lot and have spent countless hours scouting for that special buck and even passed up a beautiful 130" class buck in the process! Everyone thought i was crazy having Ian pass up that buck but yesterday evening we proved it was a very smart decision! I'm tired of typing with my thumbs here so basically in a nutshell, i glassed up the buck and Ian made him dead. Ha! Seriously, there's more to it and more folks that deserve credit for all their hard work and without everyone's involvement this ghost would not have been killed! I'll get more pics and details of this amazing experience up soon, check out this giant!

Coueszilla, better to be lucky than good

Huge congrats to you Gary, thats amazing! We had no clue anybody else knew about that buck and i thought there was a good chance nobody had ever personally seen that buck alive. That's awesome you got to see him, i know the sight of him on the hoof is something I'll never forget! I hope we can meet up and put the rack and sheds together soon. Thanks for being a great sport about it all! Jim
