    FIRST DEER TAG

My guess is N/E side of the unit. In Jan, the hills west of Saddlebrook seem to be popular, but I would guess this time of year it would be a doe festival only in that spot. There are some mule deer inbetween the biosphere and the State Park as well, but buck to doe ratio is horrible (same as saddlebrook area). Good luck, I hope you guys have a blast!

74 Years old and Getting it Done

Nelson "I have a big buck located and we could use some help to get him on the ground" Me "Let me get right back to you" Me "I'm in" BBD What a cool deal, never gets old chasing these coues deer. Team Coues Killers strikes again on a good one. Congrats again to Tony and it's a special kind of hunt when you can help someone who has been hunting longer than you've been alive, and I'm no spring chicken..... By my calculations, if I can keep hunting coues into my mid 70s, I could be able to rack up 3000 plus more inches of coues bone... Dare to Dream!

    Dream Buck

Hi all, I was lucky enough to take the buck I was hunting on the fourth day of the hunt. I knew he was special, but I had no idea how he would finish out. I've been on this site for 10 years and the wealth of knowledge I have absorbed from some of the best hunters around on this site is amazing. I've become totally addicted to coues over the last 10 years and I see no end in site. Here is my lucky #7 in a row, my fourth coues with a bow. "Toad" 132 gross Big thanks to Nelson for helping me pack this guy out. My coues buddies and families have been hard on the big bucks as of late and I can only hope the trend continues.
  7. Try not cleaning the barrel until you have to because the rounds are too hard to get down the pipe. Breech plug should be cleaned a lot, but some advise from a friend was let the barrel stay dirty and that helped me out for sure. Less fliers with less cleaning. After being forced to clean the barrel, I now consider the first shot to be a fouling shot. Still have more testing so opinions could easily change. The more I tried keeping the barrel clean, the more it drove me crazy that I wasn't getting groups.

I need some advice for December hunt.

IMO opinion your hunting to high of elevation for that time of year. I'm not saying you won't find a buck up there, but I would start my efforts in December much lower. If you plan on glassing, elevations around 5000 feet tend to have the highest concentration of deer and are also much easier to glass for a beginner. During the general hunts, the control road gets pounded pretty hard, but should be a great place in December. There are a MASSIVE amount of does around 5000' around the control road all year, it should be pretty easy to find a buck if there is any pre-rut/rut is going on in Dec. Good luck, but I think your on the wrong track at 7-8000 feet.
  10. 6.5-20x44 Vortex Viper Get the "cleaning kit" or drill bits for flash hole and larger hole in the breech plug. Keeping the breech plug free and clear is important. More important than cleaning the barrel for I think.
  11. Very enjoyable thread, I figured I would post my results from today, which I'm pleased to say the least. This is a new charge weight, sabot and bullet combination CVA Accura V2 LR Parker Ballistic Extreme 275 grain with Parker low ride smooth black sabot 70 grains by weight, approx 100 by volume (every charge was weighed out) Fiocchi 209 Primer 3 groups at 100 yards (only shot 3 groups), by far best I've ever done. I have shot a 1" group before, but it's rare. I normally shoot 2-3" groups, even have fliers that drive me crazy. Morning wind was very calm, almost nothing at all, it did not pick up until we got out to 300 yards and it was 10mph 90degree cross +/- 1" 1.25" 1.635" At 206 yards I was able to shoot a two shot group an inch low and group was 2.25" At 307 yards my elevation was about 2.5" low, elevation wise group was about 2" but windage got me good as there were some obvious increases and gusts. from left to right was 2 holes with 3" and the third and final was further left making the entire group 6.75" (we predicted this to happen based on wind dying down). At 307 yards with a 1mph cross wind, my drift is 1.7" and we guessed it to be max 12mph, and low at 6mph which explains the group nicely. IMO Next time out, I will have fresh batts in the wind meter (was so pissed it was dead, I must have left it on??) My plan is not correct for wind, but rather have each shot recorded at current wind speed to try and explain my groups as far as left to right problems. I do believe my groups at 300 would be about 3" IF I took each recorded wind speed per shot and made a dot according to my exact drift which I can figure out in strelok. I know that sounds like cheating, but in my opinion this method of recording exact wind speed at time of trigger pull would give me a better sight picture into my actual groups. I always dope for wind when shooting at animals and this would help build confidence in Strelok for my muzzy paying close attention to actual group drift vs Strelok/wind meter drift determination. I'm tracking just a tad low in Strelok, going off load data from Blackhorn 209 website for my bullet and charge weight. I will lower the speed a tad in Strelok for next time out and see if I can gain back my little bit of elevation I lost at 2 and 3 hundred yards. Overall, very satisfied with the results. At 300 yards, energy is 863.7lbs, speed is 1247.4 fps

And so it begins....... good luck! EDIT, wow that was quick!
  13. One of my friends is prepping for his very first hunt and has bought a rifle/scope combo. Scope is junk. No way he can afford a new one. Hoping to find him a decent priced scope to swap out. He has the the Late Nov hunt so we have a little time. CameraLand was giving these things away once and a while, those days are gone.....if you have something you can part with, please send me a pm with info. Thanks

    Tag transfer

Hunt of a lifetime is the organization. I believe there is more than one org that deals with donated tags. Kids with illnesses or disabled veterans have access to the tags through the orgs.

    Tag transfer

No, as I understand it, it must be transferred down from a parent or grand parent.

    What's the big deal

Lots of people would be willing to switch units in a heartbeat if they thought they would have a better chance at taking a quality animal. Seasoned veterans understand it's hard work that finds mature animals year and year and unit plays less to do with it. No one really wants more applicants flocking to "your" unit, so what would be the benefit to the successful hunter of a monster buck to post what unit it came from on the net? Most people get their info from the web, the research you can do online is endless and it has undoubtedly made better hunters out of most of us and has also steered our choices. Do you think if a ton of monster bucks came out of 36C and all these bucks had 36C posted right next to them, there would be left over tags yr after yr? What if you happen to apply for a unit that is not a guaranteed draw, do you really want the odds to get worse? I think this is really a no brainer. I love to see deer posted on line, I thoroughly enjoy all pictures big or small, seasoned veteran or a first timer. But I understand why people do not want to share some of the details...... Public land hunting can be ROUGH.....

    Dream Buck

Thanks for all the positive comments, I'm almost sad to say I plan to try my hand at finding a mature muley buck in Jan. I told myself if I could take one more nice coues buck than I would change tactics in Jan. I have not gone after mule deer since 06' or 05', but might have to go to the dark side in January and go CarpN..... Good luck to everyone in their upcoming hunts, I can wait to see the coues pics come in this year as I believe it truly will be a stellar year based on current events.

    Kowa highlanders cases

There is a tactical (folding stock) rifle case that is a flawless fit and it is padded. I keep the manfrotto elongated tripod plate on and they barely fit. Case is made by Allen and has three mag pockets on the outside with velco, that is the correct one.
