  1. This is GREAT advice everyone. Clearly the common theme (and I whole heartedly agree) is practice.

The scope I have right now is a Bushnell DOA 600. I would like to get a Nikon Monarch (opinons?).

Agian, this rifle is more for hunting than anything. I feel more comfortable with MOA vs Mil Dot etc. I am still so new to this that I am still trying comprehend the math.

I will be going out in a few weeks to set out some trail cams in 6A to get ready for Oct. hunt and will be sighting my rifle in then. Also bought a Hornady Lock N Load Reloader and hope to reload a few to shoot off that at that time.

  2. Personally I have never elk hunted in 23 however my wife's uncle lives close too and spends a lot of time in this unit. He is always telling me that the North East portion of the unit produces some monsters that only venture out of the canyons just before dark. I would agree that scouting the canyons would be best and probably why it is such a tough hunt. I don't have pictures but this same uncle harvested a 330" bull out of that unit in that general area. He is pretty open about supporting the hunting experience for others. I'll see if I can get some specifics to you. Good luck!

  3. Hey Everyone,

I am curious if anyone has experience with Long Range Shooting using a 30-06 (Long Range being 500+ for me). I am curious if my Remington 700 BDL 30-06 can make effective shots beyond the 500 yard mark and take game (Elk, Deer etc)? Some tell me yes with enough practice, others say no- not ethically unless it is on paper and other people say I need to change the rifle set up altogether if I want to take long distance shooting seriously.

I am no ballistics genius however the math sounds sane enough (and I do not have the funds to build a rifle). Can I get some constructive opinions? Currently I would not pull the trigger on an animal beyond 350-400 yards as I do not feel confident to make that shot yet. I am using 180 grain bullets right now (factory loaded- Remington and/or Winchester). I am looking to reload my own shortly. Any opinons would be welcome.

  4. Hey Everyone,

I am relatively new the forum and everyone seems to be quite knowledgeable so pardon my question as I am sure it’s been asked.

I drew an early rifle tag for 6A and to celebrate I bought a new Remington 700 BDL (30-06). My only issue is that it does not come with a recoil pad and I cannot simply replace the butt plate. Per Remington- I have to grind down the stock and then install a pad (and possibly grind the pad to fit the shortened stock).

My question is…can anyone recommend a good recoil pad and gunsmith to do this? I am located in the East Valley and would rather have a (recommended) expert handle this than make it a DIY disaster. Also, any sage advice regarding unit 6A would be greatly appreciated- haven’t hunted there in years!

Thanks in advance for any help.

  5. First ever archery elk hunt for me here and my oldest gets his first ever elk hunt on the junior cow tag--both of us in 6A!

Gonna have to spend a long, long time learning the unit!

Congrats on the tags! I love the unit and I am sure you'll all have fun. Can't wait until I can take my girls hunting with me.

  6. Drew a 6A early rifle bull tag and my father drew the 6A late hunt bull hunt. Niece and 2 nephews drew 6A jr cow tags (this will be their first hunts) and we are hoping to give them a wonderful hunt and pass on the tradition. Any advice for good areas to scout etc would be much appreciated! Good luck to everyone else here!
