First ever elk hunt 6A Non Permit Archery

Hey everyone this is going to be my first hunt for elk. I missed the draw this year and am determined to at least try my hand at bagging something for my families freezer. I just got back into archery again and am going to be doing my first elk hunt in the 6A South for the nonpermit tag hunt. I'd prefer to have an archery kill but from my understanding i can bring my .308 as well as long as im outside of the city limits. Just wondering if anyone can give out pointers on where to start, where to avoid, maybe even camp? I'll be scouting this coming saturday 10/21/17. I have the map printed out for the area from G&F but would really appreciate any tips, I fully understand this will be a hard hunt but im willing to work hard for the reward. #keephammering

    Arizona Unit 4B

Hey guys. So I lucked out and got drawn for the Archery September Bull Elk hunt in unit 4B. This will be my first Archery Big game hunt and I am real excited. I am familiar with the southern 4B area as far as recreation goes ( driving the 170, 99, St. Joe road areas and some trails in between). We spend a lot of time in forest Lakes. I have never spent any time actually scouting the area for game and was wondering what your thoughts, advice, or recommendations are for the area. I would greatly appreciate any tips as I plan on spending a great deal of time scouting this summer. I know the southern portion of that unit gets pretty busy with campers and OHV riders during the summer so I am looking at finding spots a few miles away from roads and hiking it in and out. If anyone is actually willing to give some good solid location areas and would rather private message that info than blast it on the web for all to see just send me a message. Thank you all.

    Quick Processing

Hey All, Been a long time since I have posted because it took 9 years to get a tag again, and it only took me moving to Colorado right before the draw to learn I had finally gotten drawn for a rut bull tag. That being said, driving back down to hunt the last 2/3 of early archery in 4A from Denver. If I am lucky enough to get one with a few days to spare before heading home after the 28th, are there any processors in Rim Country that can do a quick turn around? I would prefer not to cooler and ice everything back home on a 12 hour drive, but will if needed. Good luck to everyone and hope to meet some good folks in the field!

    Some old finds

I thought I'd post a pic of some old finds-sorry, no ATL's. The elk shed is not only my first brown ever, but found on my first day of my first-ever turkey hunt, in 2004, unit 27. It's unique, it's just the eye guard. There was obviously some trauma to this bull early in the growing season. The antelope shed (sheath) was found (among others) on my first antelope hunt, in Wyoming, 2005. The Coues shed was found on my first Coues hunt in the Chiriquahua's, 2004. It's the smallest 3 point shed I've ever found.

    AZGFD Newsletter?

Anybody see the new AZGFD Newsletter that went out today? Do they always recommend the public to go view elk during the hunt seasons? They literally recommend "Late August through November" and include a link to "reliable spots to view elk". Seems like this would not be ideal for hunters....have they always done this?

    Unit 22 - need help!

I am new to Unit 22 and need some general direction. Both my 11yr old daughter and I drew elk tags in Unit 22, she has a youth cow tag and I have a rifle Bull tag after Thanksgiving. I have read the general recommendations by Game & Fish, we are going to start scouting in a few weeks for the cow tag and was wondering if the places they mention are the best places to start (south of golf course for cow tag, and dude burn for bull). Things to consider: - I have an artificial knee so I am unable to do difficult hiking/climbing. - We will be staying in Pine, would be awesome to hunt close by - We would like to not have to compete with 100's of hunters, so we get that means getting off the main road and hiking in. We just need to know areas to hike to - This will be my first bull hunt Really appreciate any constructive help! Thanks in advance!

    Ever have this happen?

Have you ever walked up to find your trail-cam like this and it wasn't from humans? I guess the elk didn't want to have their pics taken. It was left open for a couple of weeks and we had a good rain Friday night but my cam seemed to still be working. We moved it to a different tree hoping the elk wont destroy it again. I know it is my fault for not locking it up but I didn't think they could open it up with their mouths.
