    January Hunt

I am curious. If you had a week off in January to chase deer in southern AZ, which week in January would you spend down there?

    Elk 22S Muzzleloader

Hey All.. My card got hit yesterday morning for the cost of an elk tag! I put in for 3A/3C rifle rut first and 22S muzzleloader rut second. Given that I only had 6 pts Im assuming its the muzzleloader hunt. I live in Mesa and hunt 22 a lot for quail, pig and deer, but Im not terribly familiar with elk south of the 260. If anybody has any recommendations on camp grounds and places to consider I would appreciate it.
  5. Here's a collection of some of my favorite video clips from the last 5 rutting seasons. I've been thinking about doing something like this for a while now and even though a lot of you have seen most(not all) of this footage I feel the layout of the video is different enough from the originals to make it worth watching. Hope this gets you coues nuts out there pumped for the upcoming season. Good luck everyone and enjoy!

    January Archery Tips????

I did some archery hunting 30 years ago and am getting back in to it this January with an OTC deer tag. I have the area located. It is in the junipers on the far north side of the Mogollon rim. Visibility is severely limited. I know where they water. Do I hunt the water hole in January or should I go looking for them? My plan is to be out there 5 to 7 days and I will be setting up a trail cam or two prior to the hunt. After reading through many of the mule deer posts on the forum, I've decided I will get Jim Heffelfinger's book Deer of the Southwest. Looks like it is a good source of info. And I will be contacting the wildlife manager for that unit. Are there any other resources I can look into for more info? Any recommendations from personal experience?
  7. I drew a January hunt on the San Carlos for Unit D. I am not one to E Scout, but considering this is my first time hunting the Rez, I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. I am looking for any information anyone can provide. Good or Bad. If you prefer, PM's are a great way to not advertise your information. I have an idea of where I want to start, but considering I am unable to scout until 3 days prior I am hoping someone can help ease the learning curve. Someone who had done this before.... Thank you for anything anyone can provide!
  8. Here's a video I put together from the rut in 2013. I posted it here on CW last year but only left it up for a short time. I recently had a couple members ask if I could put this video back up and I figured what the heck. I changed it up a bit and added more of the bigger buck footage and left out a few of the smaller bucks but it's still very similar to the original. I have developed quite the passion for videoing coues in the rut over the years it's actually more of an obsession really. I'm already losing sleep thinking about next years rut and what I need to do to get better footage. There's just something about videoing rutting coues bucks that gets my blood flowing like no other. Anyways hope you guys enjoy the video as much as I enjoyed making it. As always don't forget to watch it in HD.

    Montana Decoys

Has anyone used a Montana Decoy? http://www.montanadecoy.com/ Specifically for Mule deer hunting here in AZ. I have never used a decoy for deer hunting and am pretty skeptical about them. If anyone has had any luck with them please share. Thanks!

    How you bow hunt coues

I have killed a few cow elk and some javelina in hopes of chasing a big coues with my bow in the rut, and eventually a big bull elk. I consider myself to be a pretty good shot, I just recently bought a PSE Omen max and love it I'm ready to hunt. Now my question is how do most of you guys hunt these ghosts in the rut? Spot and stalk? Sit water? Call them in with rattling horns? I'm assuming majority of you spot and stalk, if so what would be a typical range you shoot? Thanks in advance this website is truly very helpful

    Mule Deer Behavior

I'm busy scouting out area for my first real desert muley hunt this december. I'll be hunting one of the OTC desert units and I am trying to get a good lay of the land, as well as try to find where the deer hang out. My question is what time of year do the does begin to herd up? And when do the bachelor herds generally break up? I am correct to assume that these desert bucks wont be in with the does until the rut kicks in right? Will they remain in the bachelor herds up till then? I guess another related question I could ask that may be even more helpful would be if you guys know of any good literature on the subject of desert mule deer, hunting them and their biology/behavior. Most of the stuff I've found deals mostly with deer at higher latitudes, and simply makes mention of some desert muleys existing. Thanks for all the info guys.
