  2. I'm buying a new (used) house, and was hoping to get a little input from anyone on here who has experience on this topic. The home I'm buying currently has the typical Bermuda grass yard. I want to replace it with desert landscaping, and plan on doing most of the work myself. Question is: For the basic dirt/granite/sand layer that I will be using, do I need to get a bobcat in there and dig down/out all of the old grass roots, etc., then start fresh, including some kind of plastic layer in between the fill-dirt and the 'desert layer'? Or can I just level it and over-lay the new base landscape? Said another way, here are the three options I'm thinking of: Dig out all current grasses/roots, level it, then lay-down the plastic (or other) barrier, and then gravel/sand/granite layer. Simply level it (without digging out current grass roots & such) and then lay-down the plastic (or other) barrier, and then gravel/sand/granite layer. Simply level it then lay-down the gravel/sand/granite layer without the barrier (assuming I would need to do massive weed and grass killing going forward without the barrier). The one thing I don't like about the barriers is I have this vision of tattered plastic sheets becoming visible years down the road. Any experts????? Thanks in advance! S.

    Sheds vs Home area

What have you found in terms of finding desert mule deer antlers in the spring vs where you locate them in the fall in their home areas? We find big bucks during the rut but can't find them during the rifle seasons. This year we hope to go looking for sheds in the surrounding areas and were wondering if we happen to find these buck's sheds, is that where they'll be in the fall or is that a totally different area as well? I figured it might be since they're movement isn't snow related like high country deer and elk. Any thoughts and experiences are welcomed. Thanks
  4. As a reward for reading, here's a picture I found of our beautiful desert. It looks about like the area I'm hunting. I've been fumbling around through the desert (mostly down low in 24b) the last couple of years trying to find a buck to kill with my bow. After all this time, I've realized I still haven't learned something critical to hunting desert mule deer. What type of area makes a feeding area? And what should I look for in a bedding area? What makes one section of hill, wash, or flat better for feeding than others? Especially this time of year what plants are the deer focused on? I still haven't even figured out what makes up the bulk of their diet when they're below the elevations with sagebrush and such. Now and then I spot bedded deer, or deer traveling to/from beds. Or I will find sign indicating beds from a previous days rest. But for the life of me I can't figure out much sense to where they will be. Have you seen any patterns? Do these desert deer prefer thicker cover for bedding? Or would they rather bed on an open hillside with a clear view all directions? Last year I struck out, and this year despite weeks of scouting its not looking too good. I can't consistently find deer or predict where they will be or go. This week my bow hunt opens up again, and I really want to fill the freezer. Basically I'm hoping to move up the learning curve a little bit further so I can have a better chance at tagging something, anything, this year. Any advice or tips appreciated here or in PMs.

    Elk down low

Went to go check my trail cam hoping to see some good deer but all I saw was ELK! these guys have been coming down really low and in the last couple of weeks they have been on the move. Some of these pics are a little hard to see but there are some definite decent bucks for this rookie. First trail cam pics I have ever gotten so I am curious to know you thoughts/opinions.
  6. My good friend Jesse Novak and his hunters have been having a good season in New Mexico. He is one of the rare people that hikes in sheep country just to “see what’s up!” I’m talking straight up and down country. Looking for rockys and deserts is his passion. I wanted to share a few photos for the guys that enjoy sheep on the forum. This first ram completes this hunters ¾ slam and was taken this October. Congratulations again to Jesse and his hunter Dale Ableidinger. This second ram sure is beautiful. Taken by Dain Ellsworth this November. This final ram was just taken two days ago this December. Completes ½ of Kyle McGovern’s sheep slam. Congratulations!

    Mule Deer Behavior

I'm busy scouting out area for my first real desert muley hunt this december. I'll be hunting one of the OTC desert units and I am trying to get a good lay of the land, as well as try to find where the deer hang out. My question is what time of year do the does begin to herd up? And when do the bachelor herds generally break up? I am correct to assume that these desert bucks wont be in with the does until the rut kicks in right? Will they remain in the bachelor herds up till then? I guess another related question I could ask that may be even more helpful would be if you guys know of any good literature on the subject of desert mule deer, hunting them and their biology/behavior. Most of the stuff I've found deals mostly with deer at higher latitudes, and simply makes mention of some desert muleys existing. Thanks for all the info guys.
