Yes it is real. It was posted on a backyard wildlife page initially. They herd some stomping, came over to look and she was just swinging away with her buddy

My nephew invited his soon to be inlaws and his fiance up to Alpine for the weekend, they were out driving and my brother made a comment on how the mule deer seemed to be making a comeback and fewer elk!

Father in law.......why the comeback, were the elk eating the deer? 

LMAO........I guess I better rethink that comment!!!

My guess is that the elk found a road killed rabbit and is enjoying a free, nutrient dense snack.  Elk will gnaw on bones for the minerals and eat baby birds for the minerals and iron and protein.  I'd think this is especially true for gestating cows since they're building a new elk inside and that takes a metabolic toll.
