Recommended Posts

This is a great program that I have been teaching classes at for years. This workshop makes a great gift for a special lady in your life!

Beat the heat with a retreat in the pines. The Becoming an Outdoors-Woman workshop is scheduled for August 14-16, 2009. The program will be held at Friendly Pines Camp near Prescott. It will begin at noon on Friday and end at noon on Sunday. These workshops are designed to welcome women outdoors with expert instructors teaching in an enjoyable, non-threatening environment.

The August workshop will offer 32 different classes roughly divided into thirds. One part shooting/hunting, one part fishing and the third part non-consumptive sports like camping, canoeing and rappelling. There is something for everyone. One new class for 2009 is a falconry class where participants will get an opportunity to handle raptors. Another recent addition is an advanced fly-fishing class using float tubes. Classes are held during the day, and evenings are filled with fun and entertainment like night hikes, musicians, and storytellers.

Participants stay in rustic cabins, but there are showers and bathrooms in each cabin. There is a central dining hall for meals. “There is always a lot of fun. I love to see the women interact and watch the camaraderie grow,” says Linda Dightmon, the BOW coordinator for the Arizona Wildlife Federation, which sponsors the program in partnership with the Arizona Game and Fish Department. “The only thing the participant needs to bring is her personal stuff, a good attitude and a willingness to learn,” Dightmon added.

Equipment, materials, food and lodging are all included in the $240 registration fee. The only exception is Outdoor Photography class where participants will need to bring a camera. Enrollment is open to all women 18 and older.

For more information, a schedule of classes, and a registration form, please call the Arizona Wildlife Federation office at 480-644-0077 or email us at awf@azwildlife.org.
