Tell us about your elk rifle, and cartridge?

Correction: My Remington is a 7400..... ( I made a typo). Picked it up while in college for $70! Hunted with it with open sites for several years.... ;)

Long live the semi-auto rifle!!! Especially the BAR's!!! :D Had a friend with one of the Remington pump 30-06 models. Good/fun/reliable rifles!

FT/lbs 1405 @ 350 yds. velocity over 1900 fps. with 180 gr nosler.

my max range for me with a solid rest is 350 yds.

the longest big game animal ( elk size & larger)taken was an Oryx in NM at 255 yds ranged.

antelope and deer have been taken further out than the the 350 limit for elk.

Written by 280REM's son;

I shoot a 308 model 700 with a 22" barrel and a muzzle break, topped with a Burris Fullfield II 3-9x scope. My father(the master of reloading) and I got the 155 grain Berber VLD Hunting bullet to fly at 2700fps over 44 grains of Varget.

this is purely a cow elk gun! Will not go out with a 308 for a bull as I think you need more gun. I shot a cow at 350 yards in October 2013, I hit her in the lungs but we did not see her go down. we couldn't find any blood but finally found her, fifty yards from where she was when I shot. the Berger bullet went in and immediately blew up, but it never put down any blood. it did do its job on the inside but it would be hard to track her if I didn't make a lethal shot, from now on I will use Accubonds. with these loads and this gun I was consistently hitting the rams out at 500 meters and having good groups at that.
