Tell us about your elk rifle, and cartridge?

Recommended Posts

I only have 1 "elk" rifle as I am not really a rifle guy. It's a kimber mountain ascent in 280ai topped with a lightweight swaro shooting 168VLD and 168 accubonds.

I also took a NM elk with my dad's 35 whelen lobbing bullet shaped footballs.

Christian Arms Ridgeline burnt bronze, 300PRC, 212 ELD-x, 2840fps. Purchased early 2020 use on Elk hunt in NM in Oct. Shoots great and with a magic muzzle break I feel the recoil is less than some of my 30-06s. I worked with it on the range out to 600yds and set my hunting limit at 500. I am not a good at wind doping. With the CA 300PRC I could put 4 of 5 into a 8" plate at 600yrds when the winds were tolerable, thus  the 500yrd limit on an animal. I took a 5x5 at a 357yds. Just a poke for long range hunters and the 300PRC but for an East Coast deer slayer where most shots are under 100yds it felt long 🙂

I already booked my second Elk hunt for this coming Oct in NM. Just another newbie to the big Wapiti.
