Acorns?

Recommended Posts

The best recipe that includes acorns:

1. Have a big-framed 3x3 eat them all year long

2. Let the acorns stew until Late Dec.

3. Harvest said Coues buck.

4. Enjoy a tenderloin steak over the campfire 3 miles from the truck.

There are lots of species of oak in the SW. The major ones in AZ are Gambel oak (the one that has the large green leaves and grows in the higher elevations), Arizona White oak, Emory Oak and scrub oak. The last three listed are lower elevation species (maybe 3-5,000 feet, although they can be found higher up).

I didn't know you could eat acorns! Crushing them & adding them to pancake batter sounds like something I'd like to have sometime. The only "different" thing I've tried since I've moved to AZ is prickly pear but I only ended up hurting myself!

On the Ft Apache acorn stew starts with the harvesting. Chain a chevy to a Gambel oak and shake the acorns onto a tarp. crush and bag after shelling. Acorn stew or chili is made with hatch and other chilis, potatos, onion, acorn, and elk. or slow elk. served with tortillas or frybread or toast. try apache tailgate in whiteriver during late sept or oct for a thrill.

flatlanders don't got no idear what theys missin'. more fer me.
