Dan H Report post Posted October 4, 2006 Allright<,....I backpack in for almost all my deer hunts the whole hunt, when I get drawn. If not then backpacking in for archery is usually a little shorter 3-6 days. My wife and I usually pack in some supplies the last 2-3 weekends in a row before the hunt to get some scouting in also. We pack in the weekends early on a: Small dome Tent or my Wentzel single, a good Tarp Couple gallons of Water Couple of canned foods (Dinty Moore and Chili) A lite weight handled grill piece MSR cooking pot Fuel Small tripod chair Depending on the years weather outlook a blackcat tent heater (w/propane) maybe some light stuff to like socks, silk thermals, rope, aa, & aaa batteries, flamage, and some misc utensils.. The main trip in then I have room for my tripod, scope, binos, and weapon. I pack a slumberjack -10 and a fleece blanket inside. Never froze yet CampinAz mini lantern w/MSR ISOPrope MSR mini jet burner uses ISO. Then for the rest of my food for the hunt: I usaully pack in frozen steaks and a pre-cooked potato, & a mini can of corn or beans for the first long days dinner. Oatmeal for every morning Tuna/Chicken packs for lunches w/stolen Circle K mayo on a hamburger bun or a smashed loaf of bread. Big bag of misc snacks for sitting under a shade tree munching midday. And a couple dehydrated dinners for the balance in between the canned food nites. Oh and most important a flask of Brandy or Cognac for a few shots before bed. DesertBull Report post Posted October 4, 2006 2-4 night are the usual Eureka Spit-fire 1 man tent Hiker Pro Water filter Platypus hydration bag Eberlestock Just One pack Kelty 0 deg sleeping bag alchohol stove, homemade aluminum cooking set Blackdiamond LED headlamp Z-lite folding sleeping pad Food- oatmeal freeze dried meals ramen noodles Cliff bars / Granola bars Spam singles I tried MRE's for the meals but they brought back bad memories of living in the Persian Gulf for 6 months and eating those salty, nasty tasting, packets of poo for every meal, every day. There two books out right now that cover hunting / backpacking in fairly good detail. Interestingly, they have opposite views on a lot oftheir equipment and philosophies. On a recent trip I bought a dinner pack from Sportsmans Guide and the stuff they sent me was ROUGH.... I'm actually researching others setups and will be doing a few trial runs working up to a pack in elk or deer hunt in CO wilderness. I'm also thinking of heading out for a 1-2 nights pack in on my deer hunt. I love Mtn. House meals, cliff bars and oat meal as fast back country foods. On my recent elk hunt I tried to eat as if I was packed in even though I was in my trailer. Just boiled water on my tailer stove vs. a mini stove. Thanks for all the info thus far. Dan I must agree, OATMEAL for sure nothing better, just don't forget the TP cause nature will come a callin'. trophyhunter Report post Posted October 26, 2006 How far do you guys usually pack in? Is it only a couple miles or way far? Just curious because I'm wanting to try it and not sure how to determine if the packing in is alot more effeciant than having to walk in every mornin real early. DesertBull Report post Posted October 26, 2006 There are only a few places left that you can pack in over 2 miles and not cross a road anyway, so what's the point? Wouldn't you be ticked if you packed all your gear into some hole and woke up on opening morning and found a 27' 5th wheel trailer with generator blaring, two ridges over? Don't ask me how I know.
