Leaving tomorrow for New Mexico hunt

Recommended Posts

I leave tomorrow for my muzzleloader coues hunt. I have a full week off! (Thanks Julie!) The hunt doesn't start until Saturday, so I have plenty of time to get set up and do some scouting. This is the first of 3 coues hunts for me this year 😊.

Saw three mule deer bucks in 23 2 weeks ago. One toad and this nice 4x4, you can see the third buck to the right in the trees

I came back from my hunt a day early because I was pretty beat up. This is some beautiful country, but also brutal. Lots of grass hiding lots of loose rock, making hiking extremely hard on the body, especially knees and the back.

I hit the area hard and long for 4 and 1/2 days, but only saw 1 coues buck, a small 2 or 3 point, at 430 yds down in a canyon bottom just before dark. This was my 3rd whitetail tag here in 10 years and the first buck I've seen, so hey, next time should be great!

I'm not complaining, I had a lot of fun, saw some awesome country, had a great campspot, found an Apache tear about the size of an avocado pit, and got to finally meet Kaffer62, who stopped by my camp after his successful "marathon" 12 hour hunt. 😊 Congratulations again Frank.

Here's a few pictures:

I wasn't exactly roughing it.

Had the muzzleloader all dialed in.

Looks like Coues Country to me. Now I look at that stuff and know it is going to take me half the day to cover what used to take a few hours. LOL

I was in 32 today across from San Manuel and glassed a bunch of country and spoke to the rancher way back in there at the foothills while I was with my son. Those hills and canyons just suck me in, can't get enough of it much to my son's dismay. He likes flat, flat, flat. Good thing that hunt is going to be two weekends.
