plant identification

Recommended Posts

Spent a nice day out in the desert chasing quail. As I was crossing a thick, nasty wash, I saw this plant. It's a vine like plant growing around its host. It's got feathery flowers. Anyone know what this is called?

Also, check out this weird growth on one of my quail. Nasty.

The plant's common name is Virgin's Bower, Clematis is the genus, and that could be either C. neomexicana or C. drummondi (or perhaps another lower elevation species with which I am not familiar).

Interesting. A quick google search confirms it to be Clematis drummondi. And the white flowers aren't flowers, but rather seed plumes that come after the flower. Love it's common name: Old Man's Beard! Cool

Thanks for the info! I learned something new. :)

"Old Man's Beard" was the name that my grandmother called it, but years of working with botanists caused me to switch to "virgin's Bower". In Texas, it is (naturally) called "Texas virgin's bower".
