KaibabHunter Report post Posted November 30, 2015 My oldest has gone 2/3 on Jr. Cows so this year we tried for a late bull tag for him and he drew it. We've never had a late elk hunt so this was new for us. After 9 miles of walking opening day and more and more hunters coming into our area we decided spend day 2 in some steep nasty cedar country where we had glassed up some Bulls, one of which looked to be very nice. We worked the area slowly from first light and jumped a very nice 6 pt at about 30 yards at about 1:30 pm. He crossed an opening at about 200 yards but we couldn't get him to stop. We headed in the direction he took off to thinking that once he got in the deep draw on the other side he would calm down. We got there and the opposite ridge opened up nicely where we could see a decent portion of it. Chase thought he heard a branch break and looked down in the bottom at his bull and a spike were moving up the draw. Chase got setup on the shooting sticks as the Bulls started to get nervous and trot up the opposite ridge. We were hoping for a big bull but once Chase saw antlers he said he was willing to shoot either of them. I cow called and got his bull to stop broadside at 170 yards and chase hammered him with near perfect shot with his Axis 7mm-08 shooting Hornandy 139 sst. One shot was all it took and he went down 15 yards from where he was hit. We did the gutless method, got all the meat hung and back to the ranger before dark. Went in for the rest today, broke down camp, and dropped the meat off at caseys before heading home. Chase did great with all the walking, fighting a cold, cold temps, and seeing it all through to the end to inlclude carrying out the head and a hind quarter. 10 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
