WTB decent binos - $400

Recommended Posts

Hi guys I would like to buy some decent glass for around $400. I am using some 10+ year old Nikon Monarch 10X42s now. Looking for vortex viper 10X42 or similar glass. I wish I had the cash for better ones but trying to stay under $500. Phx area

Thanks

Brian

I'm guessing you are using some old Monarch3. The Vipers are overrated unless you're buying for the warranty like everyone else.

Check out the Nikon Monarch 7 10x42 which are in that price point. You will not be disappointed. You can get them for under $400 on eBay new.

The Nikon Monarch's have been one of the best bang or the buck bino's for years. We used to sell the crap out of them when I worked retail sporting goods 15 years ago.

Monarchs are fantastic! I have had 10, 12, 16, 20 power and all are sweet glass.

Also... Leupold green ring bx-3 Mojave verrrrry nice optics and this year they have Pro Guide series HD that are awesome but pricey but can be had around $500. The non hd are fantastic and $250-$350ish

I've got a couple pairs of Nikon Monarchs that are a few years old now. As stated, no complaints. Good product at a fair price.

I'd be inclined to try some of the binos from Japan sold direct to eliminate the middleman markup.

The Mavens look to be above your $500.

The Tract Tekoa 10x42 is $80 off through today. https://www.tractoptics.com/

The Monarch 7 has good press. You might give Doug at CameraLand a call and see if he has any "as new" demos or special pricing.

Not quite an apples to apples comparison price wise: http://wildindiana.com/a/ultimate-8x42-binocular-test-drive/

Conquest HD, Swaro HD, Tract Toric, Razor, Meopta comparison:

Very happy with my Monarch 5's (8x42's). If I were you, I would save a little more and get a pair of viper 10X50's. One stop for everything you need, especially low light. I know a few who swear by the Zen-Ray's, but I've never had a chance to look through a pair. Doug at Cameraland is without a doubt the best most trusted source you could get an opinion from. He will take the time to talk through what you are looking for and give you the best options and perspective.

You should look into these...

and probably even better (I am getting some to review next) these:

I haven't seen a Nikon or Vortex product in the price range even come close to the Zen Ray's and from what I am reading on Bird Forums, the Theron's are even better.

Thank you guys for some great input. I haven't exactly decided what I will do yet but I am leaning toward a pair of older non HD vortex Razer 10x42 at a great price.

Still looking? I'm looking to sell my Nikon Monarch 5 16x56 (M511).

zeiss terra are completely under rated as well. can be had for under 300$ new. absolutely better value than 300$. i like them way more than my wife's 10x50 viper hd. can't convince her to change or i'd sell you her's and buy the terra.
