7mm-08

Recommended Posts

If I don't find a 6.5 creed for my 13 year old he will be using his older brothers tikka 7mm-08. It loves Big Game. Shoots almost any bullet well with Big Game. But this is the load we will use for cow elk if this is the rifle

Big Game, RL-16, RL-17 are really good....

H4350 will be about 100fps behind...

120's at 3,050+, 140's at 2900+, 150's at 2800+, 162's at 2700+ with the above powders at the upper node...

Bunches of powders are about 50 fps behind and some of the new ones are right there with these....

My daughter's 7-08 used to love RL15 with Barnes 140gr TTSX until I had it reworked. Now it hates RL15, but loves IMR4895 (40.3gr) and does well with IMR4064. I'd have to get the 4064 data, but it was 97% max charge based on the Barnes Manual data for 140gr TTSX.

My son's 7-08 also seems to hate RL15 with the 140gr TTSX, but does pretty good with 44.2gr H380 (95%max) and 45.1 gr H380 (97%max). I still need to test loads using both IMR 4064 and 4895, though. Out of four powders that Barnes recommends for their 140gr TTSX, one has to work great!

I'm also selling two unopened 1-lb bottles and one half used 1-lb bottle of RL 15 since neither of my kids' rifles like it and I stocked up back when my daughter's did.

anyone use varget with their 7mm-08?

I have, but my gun is an Ackley improved with an over length Wyatt's box. It has a 20 inch barrel. I can fire a 140 grain NBT at 2950 FPS using either Varget or h4895.

I've been using the 145gr LRX with a near max load of RL17. My velocity is 2900fps out of a 24" barrel.

Last year I started loading the 110gr TTSX with RL15 for a Model Seven my buddy's daughters use. Out of the short barrel we still get 3150fps and amazing groups. We've only used it on javelina so far, but last year one girl killed at 215 and the other at 275 yards with very quick, hard kills.

I am currently doing load development using Varget and Speer 130gr spbt bullets. I am not in pursuit of the highest velocity, so I have narrowed my load down to 42.5 - 43 gr of Varget. Velocities are in the 2860 - 2900 fps range from a 22" barrel.

Have you used that 145 LRX on any game yet? That is what I'll be hunting with this year, but haven't tried it yet.

Between me, my buddy, his wife, and four youth hunters we have taken 2 bulls, 3 cows, 6 mule deer, 3 coues deer, and 7 javelina with the 145 LRX...from 50 yards out to 410 yards. All were one shot kills. Never tracked anything farther than 30 yards.
