thoughts on "X-mas"

Probably a day short as usual, but I just had to bring this up. Christmas, to me is the birth of Jesus Christ, and for one day, we celebrate Him - his day. I find it odd/strange when HE becomes the X. Not invited to his own party? Not a part of "festivus for the rest of us?"

 

How does X-mas even happen without explicitly replacing Christ with X?

Just an abbreviation it still means the same thing. Sorry to say bust the majority don't celebrate Christmas for Christ, they do it for family time and presents.

I dont know how much truth there is to it but Ive always heard that Xmas originated by using the Greek letter Chi for Christ. Used to bother me a bit, but now its sort of like Happy Holidays vs Merry Christmas...to each their own and I try to focus on the meaning to me knowing its not the same for everyone.

I am with you Coach, I will not use the abbreviation. For me Christmas is about the gift that Our Father in Heaven sent to us in the form of his Only Begotten Son. We spend the mo th reading, listening and watching things that will help remind us of that sacrifice on our behalf. So, to remove the name Christ from Christmas would change the meaning. Even though others might shorten the spelling, or maybe forget the meaning, I like to think that Christmas or Xmas make the world better for a month.

Amen. Our 9 year old accepted Christ this summer as his lord and savior. CHRISTMAS took on a whole new meaning this year for him. God Bless

So your saying due to how I say something or how I spell something I don't mean what I meant?

What I meant to say was that I mean what I typed weather I spelled it the way I meant it or meant to spell it the way I mean it.

Its something along those lines and I learned the whole thing when I took RCIA to become Catholic back in 2012. Way back then, people were still meeting in secret to celebrate Christ's sacrifices and being persecuted by the Romans for following Christ. To avoid persecution and, therefore, stay alive, people would write out the "Chi/X" instead of "Christ" when referring to Christmas. That's a very simple version of its origin and in no way is to be removing "Christ" from Christmas. To people who don't understand the meaning, its often interpreted as being a materialistic symbol, removing Christ from the meaning.

 

Either way you interpret it or however you celebrate, our family wishes yours a belated very Merry Christmas!

I think you just pinpointed why some of us celebrate Festivus. We want nothing to do with the commercialism of Christmas, whether we are believers or not.

 

My entirely uninformed and uneducated opinion is that you just need some Festivus miracles in your life to lift you back up.
