2018, Desert sheep unit

Recommended Posts

What is the story this year for the desert sheep. A lot of big ones were killed last year, any left? I have max points and want to apply for the best units but I have heard conflicting reports of Pneumonia, blue tongue and so forth. I am looking at 22 and 24b. Anyone know why they have a separate hunt just for the wilderness? Wouldn't 24BS cover all that too and more?

How old are you? And how many more years do you expect to be able to get around? Someone else can probably clear this up but I'd assume 24b wilderness only let's you hunt the wilderness area as the 24b south let's you hunt the wilderness as well as the outside areas mostly east and south of the wilderness area.

Blake is right about the 24BS Wilderness vs 24BS. At max points, you might think about trying to grab a different unit that all the other max point holders wont be putting in for.

There is 66 residents with max points. If it was me I would swing for the fence with my two choices. Might not draw but.....you have better chance than everyone else with one point less. 20% of sheep tags go to max point holders.

is there any way to tell how many of the max point holders have already killed a desert sheep, i'm 1 point off max and killed my desert sheep, just wondering how long it might be before i draw for rocky

You no if you already killed a sheep and have max points now, who cares , some of us have 21+ , and still don't have a chance in heck. Just me. Good luck

Interesting point that I had not really looked at. Cant tell how many of them have killed their desert but it looks like last year 18 of the max point holders applied for Rocky and 7 drew. that's just the bonus pass. I am one point shy of max, killed a desert in Nevada a few yrs ago but really want an Az desert ram. Plus I should draw Wyoming or Colorado some day for Rocky. Stay Positive!

Based on the 2017 BP reports there were 37 max point holders that applied for RMBS. Seven drew as previously stated, all in the 20% pass. None of the max point holders who applied for RMBS drew in the 1-2 pass. Likely, most of the max point holders applying for RMBS have taken their desert rams. I would assume that 30 of the 66 max point holders are vying for rocky permits. It is likely that the 36 max point holders going for desert sheep will hold out for the very best units. I expect the bulk of the 20% permits will skew to the rocky side of the equation in the short term. Suspect it won't be too much longer and we'll see the 20% pass dip into the next lower point group. I'm no guru but this is what I think will happen.

I don't care what everyone else is putting in for, just what I am putting in for.

When I drew my antelope tag I applied for one choice and drew tag #1.

I am open to 22 or 24B, not really thinking there are 180 class sheep in any other units right now.

Likely, you will draw whatever you want within the next five years.

Cool story. Keep collecting points. Hopefully everyone else

doing the same thing dies before you.

If you know you're applying for 22 and 24b why are we even having this conversation? I asked a legitimate question as to how old you are and how long you think you can still hit the mtns. If you're 75 about to die then best be applying for a lesser quality unit. If you're 50 and in good shape and have another 20 years in you then stick with 22 and 24b and you'll draw it eventually even if it takes 10 years. But if all 60 or whatever people with max are going for 3 tags in 2 units you're in for a long wait.
