Bears by New River?

Recommended Posts

So I’m doing a few Miles tonight walking.. suns down and I’m walking the trail to fig springs.

New river Mesa is about 2 miles n x ne at this point, and I come across what I swear is a huge pile of bear scat.

Do they come this far south??

Seldom, but yes.  I have a coworker that lives on the very northeast edge of New River, and he had a pig killed by a bear 3 or 4 years ago.

Bears like to roam, especially when looking for a food source...one usually wanders into Phoenix every year, that makes the news...

Two bears have been removed from Peoria in recent memory.

Problem is, a couple weeks ago you thought a bobcat was a decent looking lion.

Do you have a pic of the bobcat so we can judge that?

Definitely a bobcat.

Maybe I’m not a good Judge of .. kitties.

I don’t have a pic of the scat- if there’s anything left from that Monster Grizzly Dump after the rain tonight I’ll snap a photo on my walk.

About 20 years ago, my oldest son and I got leftover Coues permits for 30B. We hunted at the southern end of the Dragoons. The first morning, we were glassing a promising looking canyon off a long grassy ridge that had few trees on it. I looked to my right and saw something black moving through the tall grass about 400 yards away. At first I thought it was a cow but decided it wasn't moving like one. So I swiveled my binocs in that direction and saw that it was very big bear. He eventually wandered over the ridge and out of sight. I never expected to see a bear south of I10 except perhaps in Unit 29.
