Elk spotted near Punkin Center

Recommended Posts

We were headed south on Hwy 188, 1 mile from Punkin Center and I saw some movement on the hill to the west. I stopped and made sure.of what I was seeing....a large cow elk! It stopped and watched us before trotting off.

Spoke with a rv park manager, he said yes, there's a small herd that calls that area home.

Weird seeing elk in cholla, prickly pear and saguaro cactus.

Saw elk tracks in the wash on my pig hunt near there in Feb. They must cross the creek and munch on Farmer Browns grass. We must of just missed seeing them one day. Sign and smell in the big wash.

I found an elk wallow in 24A a few years back, right around the Apache mountains. Talked with the game manager at the time and she confirmed there were elk in that area.

It's actually not that surprising when you look at units like 23 and 27 that have everything from pines to desert and the elk move back and fourth throughout the year.
