Sounds good! I was planning on getting more of an offroad type of tire and maybe a small lift for clearance!

Probably going to need snow shoes.

Even rain can make some of the roads impasssble to 2wd.

Get, or borrow, a 4wd.  No use cutting off 70% of the unit because you can't get to it.

Last year in 12AE on opening day, we woke up to 8" on the ground.  It got WAY more after day 3.  2wd would not have allowed access to where we were.  Snowed 2 days before, and started to melt, then came back in with a vengeance.  Ice was everywhere after the morning melt off.  Again, 2wd would have been a no-go.

Youll like it, dont forget the fires still going so access might be limited, you may have to drive towards the north rim park, then just after the big fields a general store on the east, you will see a main gravel road that says Big springs take that back north. thats the long way but its south of the fire.

Theres 3 main roads that are good to remember(forget the names of hand.

I call the the big springs road, middle road and the highway. the big springs road meets the paved road where I said above. then about 1-2 miles up from that the middle road will come into play.

deer will be everywhere in the tall pines this time of the year, there out in the low sage and scrubs also.

I got m old maps from  way back when somewhere around here if I think of it I will look for them.

one thing to remember TAKE 2 SPARES, you get one flat your ok you use your spare and get a flat you can be f'd for a few days. watch where you drive so you dont get stuck and the rocks up there are sharp not round like down here. if you get one flat you head to ferdonia to get it fixed immed., I dont care how much fun your having. matter of fact might want to carry a plug kit and air pump and bring 5 gals of water too. getting stuck and having to drink out of a seep or stock tank isnt fun nor healthy.

I dont think there's any cell service either- just a fyi. I have a InReach for stuff like this.

If you go scouting up there right now according to the fire report you wont be able to access any of the forest north of the 429 all the way to Utah.

Hopefully that portion of the FS 22 in red will be open by the early and late hunts but you never know after a fire which areas the FS is going to keep closed due to flooding and falling tree dangers.  The intersection of the 429 and 22 rd is where Duawane Adams likes to throw his huge camp.  If It was me and I didn't have access to a 4WD I would rent one.  I would say last year there was a crazy amount of snow on the late hunt especially during the second half and I can guarantee you were not hunting anywhere down in the low country without a 4WD and people were still stuck as heck even with 4WD last year

red- the more snow the better the hunting. there are always a day or two or  even more during the hunt you can get around with 2wd. the tag you have is awesome.

put a locker in the back,  have chains and you'll be much better off.

^^^^ This

Ranger is a relatively lightweight truck.  When things get slippery, chains and limited slip (better yet a locker) will get you a whole lot of places.  Get a high lift jack, a couple shovels and a tow strap.  Keep your head on straight and you'll be fine.

Gotcha! I just can't afford a 4wd. My dad just got one delivered from California yesturday and he will NOT even let me touch it to fix his mirror! So I guess I will have to do 2wd. I will book a hotel on Fredonia and use that as a sleeping pad and if snow looks bad the morning when I wake up at least I'm not stranded I'm the middle of the unit.

Maybe rent a 4x4 truck if it is in your budget and get chains for it. I had to rent a truck for a hunt one time , when both mine and my brothers trucks were both down at the same time when we were younger.

Its not completely devoid of cell service.  I got metro pcs which uses t mobile.  We had service around the top at jacob lake and high points on the west side where we would have areas of service.
