Okay Mr. history teacher you tell us why knowing the answer is going to learn us how to find a Coues Deer.  Inquiring minds want to know.  😷

Im sorry, you've come to the wrong class. Your admission slip says you're supposed to be in Shed Building 101 across the hall.

Butterfield overland?

Correct.

Partial credit for Wells Fargo answer, they were partners and eventually acquired the line.

I had to cheat for that one. Interesting read on wiki.

The Butterfield Trail has a special meaning for me since my grandparents lived at what was, a hundred years previously, the Cow Springs stage stop between Hatch and Lordsburg, NM. The wagon ruts were still visible and two buildings built for the stage line, still stand.

One was an adobe meat house  (right) which was nearly unchanged. Note the wagon wheel hubs and metates in the foreground.16007015375321508590346553042370.thumb.jpg.08809f90bf8ae87d3b2984b43635dbd1.jpg The other, the bunk house which received upgrades over the years.

I read a book a while back by Gerald Ahnert about it. I believe our property is close to or on the original stage route.

I was just yesterday discussing the Butterfield route and schedule with Mr. Ahnhert.

Cool how it so closely mirrored where the present day interstates are. 👍

Well I’ll be. I met him at a book signing when I got the book. Seemed like a nice guy for the few seconds I saw him.

Reliable water = settlements. Roads link settlements.

Great resource, Swivelhead, I've bookmarked for later.

One individual or two? Wells Fargo comes to mind. Or maybe the Butterfield Stage?

I didn't see Butterfield in your answer earlier.

I edited it in maybe 5-10 minutes after my initial answer.

A friend of mine and Terry's (.25-06) was of the belief that the Butterfield Stage crossed north of the Rincon Mountains over the Redington Road and came up the San Pedro to Benson. He always pointed out a bit of ruins when we passed. Redington is nowhere near Cienega Creek. Time to do some research.
