AGFD -- Quail Season Outlook

Recommended Posts

Went out this evening to try my luck. Got on numerous very large coveys, bagged 6, lost 4. My Franchi 12g was acting up and not discharging shells or cycling them. Basically  my semi became a single shot. Did come across a legless lizard which didn’t rattle so I rattled his cage. Just under 4’

Also came back to the truck and had to change a flat tire.

What kind of shells were you shooting?

Walmart special 8oz shot Federals. I think I need 7-7 1/2 oz heavier load.

Ya, agreed. My Beretta A300 can also be finicky with low brass. Made the switch to heavy game Federal and no issues.

Took 4 in a few hours in an area I haven’t hunted regularly in almost a decade. Counted 17 empty shells so there was plenty of opportunity and two of the coveys I got into held 20+ birds. They played the usual run then flush out of shotgun range early-season behavior. I plan to give it a couple more hunts this season when the weather cools, it is nice to see birds in huntable numbers.

The quail outlook seems incongruous with the dry spring and summer.  I usually hunt in the Sedona area.  Hope we get some moisture so Clover can sniff them out better.  This will be her first quail season.

Which doesn't bode well for those who enjoy chasing Mearns later on.

I am hoping to find a few of those Mearns that hold for point as opposed to the flushing devil's quail.

I had already figured that. 😉 Ginger, my long departed shorthair, loved the Fool's Quail.

Was back out this morning and scratched out a solid 10. They made me work it, hiked 11.5 miles. Started in the same spot I hunted on the opener but the birds wouldn't hardly let me anywhere near them (running then flushing out of range). Hiked over to some new country (same general area) that was maybe less pressured and had better luck. It's been a wonderful season so far.

Haha I actually got 3 but I shot the head off of the 3rd one. It would’ve ruined the picture.
