  1. I have a couple of different mounts and they all work much better than just holding up the camera to the scope. We have taken pictures that turned out pretty good out to 1800yds so far. Rick

    Kaibab on fire!

Anyone know anything about this? I drove up form Phoenix today and there is a solid haze from the Kaibab to Page. A friend of mine in Page said the east side is burning and the roads are closed going into the Kaibab. It must be bad the visibility in Page is about 1/2 mile. Rick

    Kaibab on fire!

Alot of people think this fire is good, I don't. When a resource is managed like the Kaibab is why don't they use the man power to burn excess undergrowth and young trees? This would have been managable on 6/8 when it started. Now there are 750 people and lots of money being spent on a raging blaze. The old growth is gone and won't be back in our lifetime. I don't get it. We are paying either way. Wasted money and resources. G&F will have another excuse why the deer herd is so screwed up on the Kaibab. Rick

What is your Coues deer set up?

Red Rabbit has the right idea. I taken over 20 of the little buggers and I shoot a 6.5 Lazzeroni Patriot topped with a Leupold 4.5x14 VX-L varmint reticle. I glass with 30x80 Docters and 15x56 Swarovskis. Binos I carry are 10x32 ELs and Cannon 10x36 stabilized. We have taken deer with many, many calibers and have found to put them down quickly a medium caliber with a fast semiexplosive bullet. Worst caliber I have used was a 338mag. It took 3 shots to put the deer down with the first one in the boiler room. I sure it would have died from the first shot but I don't like runners. They end up in the craziest places. My 7mmSTW Sendero works real good with 120gr. bullets too. Rick

    460 XVR or the Model 500 S&W

Jim, I went to Garys shop today and talked to him about the guns you were thinking about. He said to give him a call. He had alot to say. Thats the good news. The bad is he was leaving today to hunt Africa again. He won't be back until April 9th. If you want to talk to me give me a call. I've shot a few big game animals with a pistol and I have alot of experience with the larger calibers. Depending on your needs and recoil tolerance the caliber and handgun type can be very important. 460 XVR or the Model 500 S&W

Jim, Spend a nickle and call Gary Reeder in Flagstaff. He has shot hundreds on big game animals with handguns. His insite on what you need for what you want to hunt would be priceless. He builds several handguns to fill your needs. He can tell you what calibers work best. Rick Gary's phone numbers: 928-527-4100 928-526-3313 I own 6 of his handguns and they shoot very well. I also have 5 of his TC barrels.

Say goodbye to Dec. coues hunts.

Someone here who is an attorney or can write in a understandable manner should start a petition and have everyone sign it. We should contact all of our friends who hunt get on the website and sign it. Then we should submit this to the Game and Fish. Maybe it would help?

    Nov hunt pics

We had a good hunt considering the heat. We went 4 for 5 and a coatimundi. Can someone help me with the pictures? We took all the bucks on different days and in the evening. None of the deer were big but we took the 3 biggest bucks we saw and my friend's son took his first buck on the last day of the hunt. My girlfriend took her first buck also. All the bucks were shot between 350 and 377yds. The Coati was shot at 179yds. The 3 3x3's scored between 65 and 85pts. We saw alot of Javelina and we have tags for this area. We can't wait! We also saw a pack of 8 coyotes. I have been varmint calling for 30 years and have not seen that before. If I can get help on the pictures I will try to post them. I've shot bigger deer but this was the best hunt for whitetails I have ever been on. It was a wonderful experience for the 2 rookies. pollohombre

    Best coues rifle ?

Check the ballistic tables. Decide how far you intend to shoot them find a cartridge that will deliver 1000 foot pounds of energy at that range. Then you need to set up your rifle to shoot accurately to the maximum range you intend shoot at. When my friends ask my this question I tell them to start at the 7mm mag and go up. I have taken over 20 of these critters and based on what I have seen the 7 mag would be my minimum. I currently use a Sendero 7mmSTW that was accurized by Rifles Inc. for glass and stalk animals. I also use a 6.5/Lazzeroni Patriot when I need to walk a long ways. It weighs 5.25lbs and has a 24inch carbon wrapped barrel. Both rifles are extremely accurate. I use 120gr bullets in both guns. If you practice at the ranges you are going to hunt at you will know exactly what you and your rifle are capable of. These deer are tough and I have had to hike back to where I've shot a deer the night before to recover the animal. That is when I decided to hunt with a caliber large enough to put them down with either energy or hydrostatic shock. I have also found that your bullet selection is important. My friend shot a deer at 354yds and ended up shooting it 4 times before it went down with a 7mag. He was using 160gr nosler partitions. He told me the reason was is that he had an elk hunt later in the year and that was the load he worked up for it. The bullets were zipping right through the deer. If your choices are 270 or 300wsm, I would take the 300wsm with 150 to 165gr bullets. Chickenman

    35B Late WT.

Coosefan , I have hunted 35B over 10 times. Last year in Dec this year in Nov. I have seen some pretty good bucks. I've taken a 103, 97, 87 and several between 75 and 85pts. I have hunted all over the unit. We should talk on the phone if you want my info. Its a tough unit to figure out without lots of scouting. Amanda posted the pictures of our hunt this year. pollohombre

Leupold VX-III help with a decision

Amanda, I agree with most of what deerslam says. I don't think they are too bulky as most of my scopes are 6x20 types. I think if you are shooting at 400yds and in the 4.5x14 is great. If you are looking at these ranges I would sight my gun in at 3.5" high at 100yds and shoot at 200, 300, and 400. I think you will find that all you have to do is put the crosshairs on the animal out to 325ish and adjust accordingly to 400yds. I spot and stalk so my target is identified so I'm not jump shooting animals. This would be the only issue with a 3.5" sightin. To clarify my position I own many expensive scopes. I do not see any light advantage with the 50mm objectives. I have had light gathering issues with my 8x32x56 Nightforce. With a scope in the 4.5x14 range glass quality is the most important issue. I currently own Zeiss, Swarovski, Leupold, Fuginon, Leica scopes in this catagory. I have looked through 1" and 30mm, 40mm to 56mm ob lens in the field and the clarity with good quality scopes to 400yds IMO is plenty good enough. Having said this of your choices I would do the 40mm ob scope. For the money the Zeiss Conquest is the brightest scope I have used. I do own several leupolds and they are good also. I have a 4.5x14 Zeiss and it is brighter in the field than my Leupolds. I also have a Swarovski 6x18TDS the is incredible. When I look through them in the stores they all look good but out in the field you can see the difference. I also find that on bright windy days I have to turn my scopes down to 10x to get clarity. If you are shooting at deer size and larger targets at <400yds I don't think the rangefinding reticle is necessary. I do carry a rangefinder with me. Technically the 40mm will mount closer to the bore and you will have less parallax. I could go on but I would need to know more about the specific use of your rifle. If you want any more information email or call me. pollohombre 928-645-2172 PS The rookie hunters we took on our Nov hunt shot a 7STW with a 6.5x20 sighted in at 3.5" high at 100yds. They took there deer at 376 and 377yds. All we did was tell them to put the crosshairs at the top 2" of the deers back. In the heat of the moment it is important to keep it simple.
