    hunting videos

Sounds interesting to say the least. I think we have probably all wished we had cameras filming some of our hunts and this would be cool to see someone who actually planned for such an occasion. These deer have to definitely be one of the harder game animlas to film so any footage is all the more impressive!

    Spot lighting

I think I need to look into a spotlightting trip. Sounds like almost as productive in terms of seeing game as a well placed game camera.

    Grat Hunting dog

I downloaded the file and whenever I am stressing, I just push the play video button and forget all about whatever was the problem! I think that little guy must have thought he had a tiger by the tail!

I have never tried the Bow but may have to someday. I think I coud shoot one but just never had the itch. I admit the thought of less pressure has made me consider it once or twice.

    Wild Fires

Peckl1 Sorry but the secret is out! They are already here and bringing more with them every day! Hopefully not too many know how to hunt! I know it is a lot different than most any other state.

    Wild Fires

22 was one of my choices, 3rd I think so if I get drawn there, I will no doubt be going with Elvis Presley! I agree with you Rembrant on the fringe areas. I read an article in a magazine a few years back about Fringes of fire areas being real Hot Spots (pun intended) for deer and critters in general. The article said something about the nutrients released make the grass and small plant growth really appealing to the animals. The cover aspect of a moonscape keeps game near the edges so they can feed during the darker hours and stay in the covered areas for security during daylight. One other point is the moonscape being less populated means the fringe areas are more populated. Sort of like all the people from everywhere else moving out to AZ. The fringe areas can really be harmed though if the population is too dense so the hunters come in to do their part again. A fire this size, in the right areas might cause the AZGFD to offer emergency Depredation permits like they did around Flagstaff a few years back with the elk heards. Missed that one but I'm ready for the next one! I have seen animals (deer elk, cows) flee well ahead of fires but no doubt they do get cut off by fire on occason. We do not hear the PETA posse griping about wildfires though so they must not have much evidence showing animals cannot evade fires.

    Wild Fires

A couple comments on the willow fire. I have not looked at the maps real close, but it seems to me that the realtively slow rate of spread on this Willow fire supports my memory of the burn area as not having a lot of timber. Seems it was a lot of manzanita, juniper and general scrub brush. I can see how it wold turn it to a moonscap and generally wipe out everything if that is the case. Timber and winds promote the tre topping and jumping around skipping over areas. I seem to remember the fire retardant drops are full of grass seeds too. That helps promote the grass growth after a fire which saves the topsoil from runoff and erosion. Vegetarian game can smell the fresh grasses and are drawn to the new growth so they come back fairly quickly. The game return faster thatn the "look " of the way it was. Have not hunted that area for 20 plus years but I have sypathy for those who hunt it regularly.

Very nice find, and it is a shame he didn't grow up any since you said he appeared younger based on the teeth.

    What to do

I have 2 homebrew cameras and I camo & secure them pretty well. Still uneasy about the possibility of losing one of them but it is a risk I am willing to take. Positioning the camera is a challenge, finding a hot trail or tank, but well away from other hunters or hikers is the hardest part. I might suggest if there are people around your selected spot, you put a note on the outside of the box asking people to leave the camera as it is where it is. Something like it is part of a research study and is not harmfull to the animals.... Put your contact info on the note also. Ask anyone who finds it to call you and report on the date time and condition thye found it in.... I would not leave my name on someone elses camera if I had a picture taken. Like Homer Simpson said to Bill Bidwill "just keep walkin" and if you have nothing to fear, then you have nothing to fear?

    Unit 24B

TAM I am a bit skeptical on what the AZGFD wrote about the area. They have no mention of Lions in the unit, and I have seen tracks, scat and I know hunters who have seen them. Also The few "places to try" are usually overrun with Road hunters and hunter wannabe's. You have a pretty fair risk when that many people are out ready to shoot at anything that moves! Those recommendations used to be good spots but from what I've seen and heard, not so much in the last few years. Some of the local folks are pretty protective of "their" areas too. So anymosity is another difficulty to contend with. I have taken deer from some of the areas mentioned but the pickins for everyone are thinner. Seems it went south about the time they posted those suggestions. More human activity = less deer activity. I Rarely go around some of the areas due to the traffic and the related risk. I do like some of them but it is just not worth the risk, or the wasted time when someone spooks the deer you've been stalking, just blasting up the side of a hill or yelling to his buddies in the truck 1/4 mile below. I like to get back in off the beaten path. Enjoying the experience and the benefits they provide, but hey that is just one guys opinion. Love the whole outdoors experience and the mystery it often provides. Every hunting trip can bring fortune to those who seek a true reward.

Not sure if there is information on the p32 but gp to www.jesseshuntingpage.com and look for the "homebrew camera" section. Great group over there, and a nice complimentary site for this one! and most will help a newbie in the first cam process. good luck

    caliber ?

I have been shooting a 300 win mag Rem 700 BDL for over 10 years now. First 5 were great! then I went dry for several years. Found out in the end the scope was not holding zero! Not even holding 5" at 100 yds when I finally trashed it and went with the Leupold 3-9x50. D a r n nice and Bright and I wish I had got it sooner. Anyway the 300 win mag was the flattest shooter at 300 yds plus when I bought it, yet it has a fair variety of factory loads. Not every gun shop or sporting goods store carries the variety, but they usually have something. You have to reload or buy before you need them. Lots of others to choose from now so do your research and pick the best for your needs. Tikka is a very good gun from what I have seen. Shot a couple last year in Wyo whlle hunting lopes and they are hard to beat for the price. Might go with one of those when I tire of this remington, but for now, I am happy with it! My .02 worth

    odd places to see coues

I have seen them in various units Running WITH Mulies. Strange but they seem to congregate in the later part of the day. Seeing a Coues buck hearding Mule does is pretty odd wherever you see it.
  18. I put in with my hnting partner and we went with the old "drop it off at 6pm closing day" trick. He thinks it works so well we should not ness with the system. Good luck to you All, Especially Ernesto! When I read your posts I think about the President Reagan story about the Pony. Love Ya! Anyone need a pick me up, Log on to this board and taked a dose or 2 of Ernesto!

    Unit 24B

One of my regular areas. Area Around QV is pretty mixed with some nice Coues but more mulies. Popular spot is in to and northeast of the pinto mine between superior and Globe. Thinking about trying off of the apache trail and south of canyon and apache lakes. Sort of on the north edge but water is plentiful obviously. Amazing variety of game in the area. Lions, bears, coatimundi, Mule deer, and Coues. Good Luck, Try to scout plenty of time before your hunt.

    Unit 24A

Amanda Thanks.... I actually tried the unit 24 search once, but maybe I put in "unit 24 a"? I remeber thinking I would only type 24a, and not the word "unit" so whoo knows. Hope the search lesson helps someone besides me! Filling out the applications Sunday! All I want for Christmas is a 130 buck!

    Deer in house

A few months ago they had one run around all over inside a Train station or Subway station in New York I think. Funny, maybe the Deer are becoming more domestic?

    Unit 24A

I think I remeber Amanda saying she was hunting there this past year. I tried to look up 24a on the site search but came up blank. apparently you have to have at least 4 characters to search with. I have not been in ther in some time so I will defer to others. Try a search for Nov - December posts in Rifle hunting and you will fins some thing to go on. good luck

75 feet is incredible. I assume the camera is digital? Make sure you tie it down good, and post some of them pics soon! Share the set-up information if you don't mind, as I have yet to do a digital cam and would love to do one.

    Hunting the Fringe

I used to hunt a lot in 4A and 4B above the rim for deer. There was one canyon that was always loaded with them. Big ones were not uncommon. An old timer showed me the area when we were hunting mulies and I think I could find it again but for sure someone else on the board knows where it is. When I started hunting Coues, I had no idea they were in the desert areas. I could not believe any deer lived in the 2000 - 3000 ft levels. Lately I have seen lots of deer in the lower, flatter, less rugged terrain. I find it harder to hunt so I usually continue to hike to the high spots and glass however, The last 2 years the biggest deer taken in the areas I hunted were taken in the lower elevations with less cover and flatter contours. Interesting topic!
