Holy Schamoly! -
Took my first bull elk in unit 8 yesterday morning. Got in this afternoon, been unloading gear and cutting meat till now. Tough 9 days, bulls were quiet due to the Harvest moon. Things improved the last couple of days. Took a hint from GRONG and found this guy with a couple young bulls and a couple cows yesterday morning. Sorry for the short story, but here are the pics (they say 1000 words!) Me He broke off his 5th, but I'm not complaining! Heavy Twisted pedicle Only Coue's shed of the trip -- bout a 90 incher I'd guess Shed pile from miles and miles of walking Whose straw hat is uglier? I'm going with GRONG's

Anybody got any guesses on how much it costs to just have a cape done? I want to wait on doing a mount (money-wise) but I want the option down the road. I called Weller's this morning and they said they could do it, but I never asked a price. I've heard some places would prefer you pony up for mount before they'll do your cape.

CALLING ALL DEMOCRATS
SilentButDeadly replied to GodIsGood's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
I appreciate that you guys aren't getting personal... I will say that I've gained new perspectives on alot of issues from reading these political forums over the past couple years, it makes me a more rounded thinker I believe. I'm going to refrain from replying to any more of the comments though -- I'll leave that to any of the other in-the closet democrat hunters out there, if there are any. -
TOAD! good job!

CALLING ALL DEMOCRATS
SilentButDeadly replied to GodIsGood's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
I support Obama, the last 8 years are one reason, the last 2 weeks are another reason, the next 10 years are the last one. Republican control of Congress over the last 20 years has helped to create the market situation we are in right now (see Phil Gramm/John McCain to know what I'm talking about), and no I don't think the current Democratic Congress is any step forward, rather I see it as a step back, they are pathetic. I believe that there needs to be a radical shift in this country's energy policies and economics. Instead of funding Saudi and Emirate princes' luxury jets, palaces, and toys (>$800 billion a year in oil export money), why don't we make some of our own energy -- and not the kind that gushes? The 'next wars' to be fought over oil are already being fought, why don't we remove ourselves from the equation? Are you afraid of Obama because he is black? democrat? liberal? change? Bob Herbert of the NY Times had an outstanding OP ed on September 9th about being a liberal... How many of you have ever benefited from civil rights? women's rights? social security or unemployment insurance? medicare or medicaid? Are any/all of these things fundamentally wrong? I'm not afraid of losing my gun rights or my hunting rights, there are too many democrats who back guns (and basically all republicans), and hunting is a STATE governed issue so it shouldn't matter that Palin hunts, what should matter is the difference of a heartbeat from being the most powerful person on the planet. Bush was a hometown people's-person who America felt they could connect to, look at how he did. Tyson -

+1 on the body glide +1 again on the shoes -- go to the Running Shop or Fleet Feet or Performance Footwear and have them size you. +1 again on shorts -- I've got a pair of nike training shorts (got them from coaching rugby at UA -- same style as the football shorts) that have a pair of underwear liners in them, and the crotch seam is tight up high so the seams don't rub between your thighs. I don't have chafing problems up higher, but I hear 'bloody nipples' are common, yikes! As for doing the 1/2 vs the Full, like Stanley said, its totally mental. The pace you run for a marathon is not the same pace you run 5 or 10 miles at. Start slow for the 1st hour and try and go faster the second hour. For me 10 minute miles is standard pace.

all of them are coues.

haha, don't forget she also had a legion of personal trainers behind her (whipping her by her own command).. All I had was Briggs-dog and dirt roads on State Trust land!

I ran the San Diego Rock n Roll marathon last May, as far as marathon planning it was great: bands, lots of people, good weather, etc. As far as running 26.2 (and yes that .2 is for real) it was one of the more painful/transcendent things I've ever done. As for the training miles, send me a PM and I'll outline the training I did for it. Its something like 5,7,10,12,15,16,18,20,22 miles on Saturdays for a couple of months (you can count how many Saturdays with at least two rest weekends during training, and two weeks of rest before the race)... Personally, I started out at the 10 mile mark but my wife who did Team in Training (Leukemia and Lymphoma Society fundraising group) started out at like 2. All you gotta know is that Oprah ran the Chicago Marathon in 4:29.00 Sadly, I took my pack-test for firefighting two days before the race, and that *little* *tiny* bit of soreness I felt at the beginning of the race really killed me the last 2 miles. I finished in 4:51.00 which means I am destined to run another one of the bloody things so I can say I beat that woman. (and before any of you yahoo's belittle me for being slower than Oprah, know that I'm 6'2, 210lbs -- not exactly built like a Kenyan). I'm signed up for the Tucson 1/2 Marathon; my wife is the program coordinator of the BETTER THAN EVER program the official sponsor of the race -- http://www.tucsonmarathon.com/ Good luck with your training! I'm starting to wonder which is more non-typical, the antlers, or you! Bajeezus you are one bad-a-mo-fo! ps, my straw hat is way bigger and uglier -- the only size that would fit my giant head was the 'Shanghai Lifeguard'. the only thing I can stand to buy at Ace Hardware...

well, get back in that tree, and maybe he'll show up again... Its called bow-hunting, not bow-killing for a reason...

I thought I'd rub it in... Next Thursday (Pray JC, Mohammad, Vishnu, Sheba, Zoroaster, Flying Spaghetti Monster, Chupacabra, Obama, am I forgetting anyone?) I'll be sitting on a knoll in full health watching the elk come out of the trees in Unit 8! I wonder if the tingly feeling will last until then? How the heck am I supposed to focus on work/school/wife/dog/coues for the next week?? Okay, I can focus on Coues... those other ones are going to come back and get me in the butt though I think... Tyson ps, this is the tank I'll likely be watching opening morning (vid from my 06' cow archery hunt): http://picasaweb.google.com/tswetnam/06AZC...061900304857490

Deadeye, You should post your video again I think I know which one your talking about and I just put it up check the Elk footage thread in other big game. SilentButDeadly hope you take your video camera along with you to 8. Once again nice work on the video. Anytime I heard glunking on I video I instantly love it. We're taking 3! I've got to admit that is not my voice on the camera, it is my father-in-law Ernie Allen, I'd run off after another herd (with a REAL Herd-Bull) and he stayed behind to film the other bulls that had been gettin' grumpy at one another -- it was a great afternoon we found ourselves between 3 herds all headed toward the same waterhole down a wide canyon. I made the choice to go after the cows in the big herd, which of course didn't work out, but, Ernie got this good video at 70 yards...

That is one of the most amazing photos I've ever seen of an elk.... I think the reason the elk is in focus and the trees are not is that he was moving the camera in sync with the elk, while the trees remained still. That is seriously a contender for photo of the year!

Ethics of stealing your own trail cam?
SilentButDeadly posted a topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I forgot to bring my key to the lock I put on my trail cam this weekend. I landed up having to steal it back from myself. Fortunately the owner had strapped it to a rotten mesquite branch, so all I had to do was break the branch apart and pull the cable locked camera up along it until it slid off the end. My question is, since I forgot the key, should I have left the locked camera in place? Its never good to steal, especially from yourself. -

I got one of the scoundrel: These were on there too: -
Congratulations you just found a Gray Ghost! Please observe the following instructions: 1.) Wait until he beds down. 2.) Memorize EVERY SINGLE DETAIL down to the last rock, stick, shrub, bush, tree, cactus where he is bedded. Close your eyes, imagine walking in, open, see if you got it right, repeat. 3.) Figure out a way that you can get in on him without seeing him (or more likely the case, him seeing you). 4.) Go home (or back to camp), eat something, take a shower, shoot your bow a couple of times to make sure it is dialed-in, put on your freshly washed and hung dry scentlok clothes. 5.) Come back, relocate him to make sure he hasn't moved. 6.) If the wind isn't favorable don't even think about putting a stalk on him, scentloks don't work. 7.) If the wind is favorable, take off your shoes, put on at least 2 pairs of heavy socks and start moving in as quiet as you possibly can. 8.) TAKE YOUR TIME, a good stalk can take anywhere from 2-6 hours, no need to rush it at this point, you know where he is, its the middle of the day, he ain't going anywhere. 9.) As you get within 100 yards, start glassing THROUGH the bushes with your binos, look for antler tips, eyes, ears, tail. Take a couple of steps, repeat, repeat, repeat. 10.) When you are within 40 yards get to a place you can take a shot on him where you can draw down without him seeing you. 11.) Draw, stand up, step out. 12.) Try and remember everything Randy Ulmer ever taught you in 5 seconds. 13.) Knock another arrow. Try and get another shot off before he gets away. 14.) Sit down, curse, then cry that you screwed it up, again. 15.) Go look for your arrow(s). 16.) Blood! Holy $%*^ you hit him! 17.) Follow blood trail to deer 18.) Cry some more, over the body of beautiful creature you just laid to rest!

If you know a way around the General Mining Act of 1872 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Mining_Act_of_1872) I'd love to hear it! Grijalva and Giffords are trying to stop it: http://www.azstarnet.com/allheadlines/170868.php but have been stonewalled by the Senate. http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/coronado/rosemont/ http://www.hiltonroad.com/
