SilentButDeadly replied to .270's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Indeed, I found a Coue's shed last week - it was so pathetic I didn't want to take a picture - imagine a 3 inch spike... I found some elk sheds up on the South Rim though - left um laying as they were inside NPS boundry - I've only got 1 good pic with me here at work - apparently elk like to bed on the rim - probably to take advantage of the warm air coming up outta the big ditch at night. -

Answer: Not much - humans put out 100 times more, every year, volcanoes only go off every few years. "Volcanoes put off less than 1% of the annual CO2 emissions annually," -- Pinatubo put off 42Mt CO2 in 1991: http://www.bgs.ac.uk/programmes/landres/se...ntributions.pdf "Comparison of CO2 emissions from volcanoes vs. human activities. Scientists have calculated that volcanoes emit between about 130-230 million tonnes (145-255 million tons) of CO2 into the atmosphere every year (Gerlach, 1999, 1991). This estimate includes both subaerial and submarine volcanoes, about in equal amounts. Emissions of CO2 by human activities, including fossil fuel burning, cement production, and gas flaring, amount to about 27 billion tonnes per year (30 billion tons) [ ( Marland, et al., 2006) - The reference gives the amount of released carbon ©, rather than CO2, through 2003.]. Human activities release more than 130 times the amount of CO2 emitted by volcanoes--the equivalent of more than 8,000 additional volcanoes like Kilauea (Kilauea emits about 3.3 million tonnes/year)! (Gerlach et. al., 2002)" : http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/Hazards/What/VolGas/volgas.html It should also be noted that Volcanoes have a COOLING effect on climate due to the dust they put into the upper atmosphere -- the best example was the summer of 1816 - also called 'the year without a summer': http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_Without_a_Summer -

Conference on lead coming up

Unit 33 Hunt pressure

I've been thinking about getting one -- we are talking about the pop-up decoys -- the biggest factor would be weight and johnny-on-the-spot pop-up-ability. We've been thinking if you had one, you hear the bull, you pop the decoy up as you call him in and your caller hides behind it (personally I like the Wapiti-end decoy)...

Spring Snow Melt and Global Warming
SilentButDeadly posted a topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Okay, there has been (and still is) a few people going back (and forth) on whether or not Global Warming is real, yada, yada, yada. The big snowfalls that happened across North America this winter represent an interesting experiment to see what will happen this spring. This is sort of a big deal, because the faster the snow melts the less water will be available in rivers and lakes this summer before the monsoons set up. http://www.gjsentinel.com/news/content/new...c=7&cxcat=7 The National Weather Service has some really cool web pages for both El Nino and Snow: http://www.nohrsc.nws.gov/nsa/ http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/anal...y/ensodisc.html Currently the Climate Prediction Center is calling for a weak La Nina this spring; that means reduced precipitation (from observed average) for the Southwest (too bad for the antlers that are growing on my Unit 8 bull ) until June or July. Anyway, lets see what people think - and wait another couple weeks and see what happens... Tyson -
my latest iron-man wrist watch has passed on to wherever old plastic watches go when the wrist bands break and the screens get too scratched to read... anyone got any ideas on a good outdoor time piece, not too big n bulky, not too spendy, etc???

Why can't I find any sheds?
SilentButDeadly posted a topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
I'm exhausted from reading all of the back n forth on here... Its great reading everyone's different opines but I have to admit it isn't the same as looking at ATL photos of antlers, or seeing trail cam pics of toads. (which by the way, I haven't seen any fresh Coues photos in like a week!) I'm not posting in here again until I find a fricking fresh shed on the ground. Good luck to you all! Tyson -
I see them all the time -- Saw Amanda once out by Catalina Highway on Tanque Verde (didn't know who you were then - I'd just started on the site), Saw a truck in 6a last muzzleloader season At Sportsmans in Tucson Etc, etc.... Maybe I'll flag down somebody next time...

I heard about Goulds in the Santa Catalinas; http://www.azgfd.gov/artman/publish/printer_459.shtml Never seen any in the Rincons (spent 3 summers up there working fire); have seen Montezuma quail and band-tailed pigeons up there though... -

Spring Snow Melt and Global Warming
SilentButDeadly replied to SilentButDeadly's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
It has been strange to me watching the news coverage of Global Warming develop over the last 10 years. The sensationalism that the media spins onto it makes it seem like Al 'Chicken Little' Gore is out there blathering about how the world is going to end; we have a big drought and then the media pounces and labels everything as being caused by Global Warming. My wife (who works at the Arizona Cancer Center) got a phone call the other day from a reporter asking if Global Warming causes skin cancer! I think it is getting warmer - its there in the thermometer readings. I try and stay skeptical about what is causing the warming - but most of the science I read says it is CO2. I still don't think you can de-tangle all of the factors that go into the planetary system, but you can get a decent picture of what is going on. If I had to rate the threats to the human race in order I'd have to say that climate change is pretty high up on the list, but I'd say it is behind Chicken Littles who can push the big red button and do a whole lot more harm in the short term. I watched a show last night about gorillas in Rwanda - the craziest part was where they talked about how in 1994 the Rwandan Genocide killed 900,000 people in 10 months and refugees were invading the national park to survive - the phone calls that the people who run the park there got were 'How are the gorillas doing?" not "How are the people?" -- People care less about one another and more about charismatic animals. -
Snakes and Pups....
SilentButDeadly replied to Coues 'n' Sheep's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Briggs has stepped on a rattler before - fortunately he was running, and the bugger struck at nothing but air... We've had a few run ins with um now, and he's shown no interest in them. I let him sniff a bullsnake once hoping it would bite him and teach him a lesson - he took one sniff and ran away from it... Anybody get that Red Rock Biologics vaccine??? -
Spring Snow Melt and Global Warming
SilentButDeadly replied to SilentButDeadly's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
The paper my father is talking about does not 'blame' anything. What he is talking about is the fact that fires are starting sooner in the spring, and burning longer into the fall than they ever have - even in places where we haven't affected the fire regime. Also, forests that historically have not burned in 200-500 years are burning - Canada is set to become a CO2 source instead of sink for the first time because of all the trees it is burning every summer now. http://meteora.ucsd.edu/cap/pdffiles/warmi...ire_science.pdf This stuff isn't unsupported - there are hundreds (and thousands) of other researchers who have come to the same conclusions - everything from birds migrating and laying eggs at different times, tropical species moving north, plants blooming sooner, etc, etc. -
Spring Snow Melt and Global Warming
SilentButDeadly replied to SilentButDeadly's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
The snowfall this winter was due to the way that the storm tracks set up, as you can see from this link: http://www.cpc.noaa.gov/products/analysis_.../nawinter.shtml During La Nina years (which we are experiencing a weak La Nina right now), the jet drops into the northern half of NA; interestingly enough, you also see how the southwest is drier - as the figure I showed in the first post above indicates Arizona is actually below average snow pack for this time of year - agreeing with this trend. As for the snow melting; historically it would take until july or august for the snows to melt off the high mountains of the West, this water slowly fed lakes - which are then tapped for irrigation. If the snow falls as rain during the winter, or melts too quickly in the spring you will have flooding at the wrong times of year, leading to problems later in the arid for-summer when you run out of water to drink or irrigate fields with. Come on, are you really going to hammer me for using the word 'monsoon'? Thats pretty weak. Everyone on this forum calls the rain we get in Arizona during the summer the monsoon; and NOAA calls it the North American Monsoon (NAM). As far as this winter's record snow being a + or - sign of Global Warming, they're not; but the rate at which it melts for better or worse will be used by people pushing this as another nail in the coffin. -

from the article it sounds like it was her son who got diddled.... He is in jail for child molesting, allegedly, what you read in that article is that she says he was also molested, allegedly, and that is why he is what he is, maybe if she would have put no trespassing/private property signs on him and locked his gate, this never would have happened. As far as I'm concerned if her son was a molester the sob should be dead, child molesters should be shot when proven guilty, just like murderers. http://www.azstarnet.com/sn/printDS/68013 Yikes, I could have lived a happy life without ever stumbling onto this little stain on humanity.... -
