    Glassing the flats?

Sonora is where I learned this style of hunting (or maybe I should say keep learning this style). It takes lots of practice and you have to be willing to track for miles & miles. Some hunters will say "well your just stalking blind you don't know what you're following", and there is some truth to this but there is much a track can tell you if you just pay close attention. You can tell gender from the size and length of the track, body weight from the depth and splaying, body size from stride and overstride, (and my favorite) antler size from the way a buck navigates under and around obstacles. There are many subtleties to discern from and I learn new ones every time I go out. One of my favorite quotes is from an old tracker from Sonora who taught me a lot and has since passed, "La huella nunca miente, siempre dice la verdad," translation "The track never lies, it always tells the truth". Glassing the flats?

Glassing is best. When the cover is very thick I'll fine tune my focus back and forth to try and peer through the branches. Sometimes the flats are too vast and glassing points nonexistent. In this case I like to visit waterholes and washes in hopes of cutting a fresh track while wearing a scentlock suit and sneaky feet. When I do this I move very slow and keep glassing in the direction the tracks are heading. Patience is key.
  10. Congrats on a well deserved muzzleloader buck! Thanks for those football sized sandwiches too! Here is a pic of those metates we found on your hunt.

    2013 WT Hunt

Nice buck! Sounds like you had a great adventure and an awesome archaeological find. Hope to see a picture of those metates soon. I also found a couple of pestle & mortars while helping a buddy on his muzzleloader hunt, they're a rare find.

  13. Spectacular bucks! Congrats on a Twister of a lifetime!
  14. I had an similar rack scored and the scorer picked the R3 as a main beam, but this rack was missing what you have labeled as R2. I found this rack about 12 years ago and for the longest time I thought that the buck must have sufferd an injury while in velvet to produce this anomaly. Now that I've seen this Unit A buck I've changed my theory to genetic anomaly because it's on both sides. Anyone know what would cause this?

    San Carlos Unit B.....MONSTER!!!!!

Again congratulations to the hunter, great trophy regardless!!!!!!!! I made a comment that it looks like a mule deer, I guess that makes me one of your "experts" mc68. "I KNOW that most of the people putting these posts up are not trying to honor the animal,...." ".......THERE IS a large amount of jealousy involved." I'm so relieved we have a MINDREADER on this site! ".......keep your dumb a$$ responses to your self." You've wisely backtracked and chosen to exonorate COACH of your accusations. What about our host Amanda? From what I've read on this site the woman knows more on the subject than most could hope to. In my opinion she's a true expert! How about a little respect. As for me, I'll still voice my opinion and hope and try not to offend any one. CHILAX bro!

    More Hybrid pics

Coolest pic sequence I've seen! Way to document. Here are some pics of a hybrid taken in Sonora in 2010. The hunter thought it was a small mule deer untill it flagged it's white tail.

    bigger in mexico?

+1.The key to big bucks in Mexico is to find well managed property, or that hard to find gem of a ranch that has never been hunted commercially! Az still produces MONSTERS!

  21. I know one of the top toolers in the country, he's making a bow case and rifle scabbard for me. His specialty is chopper seats but he can do anything (very life like). Only problem is he's out of Long Beach. You can see his work and contact him at www.nomadcustomleather.com might be worth a shot.

    mule deer in southern az

I agree with having less rifle tags and would even go as far as willingly pay more for one if the quality were there. However we can't expect rifle hunters to be the only ones making a sacrifice. Unregulated, non species specific (any antler) archery tags are a big problem for muledeer bucks. In 35s the problem is somewhat obscured. The only way to shoot a mulie in these units is to pick up a muzzleloader or fling arrows; and fling'um they do!(wondering how many archers fess up to wounding animals). Last season there were 50 Nov. and 50 Dec. muzzleloader tags for these units, again these were non species specific. 41 total deer were taken during these hunts and I'm guessing a good chunk were mulies. Most of these bucks were taken in Dec. This year they've shuffled these tags around to 80 in Nov. and 20 in Dec. , 100 non the less(not wanting to lose the revenue i'm guessing) but the pressure is still there. This means less bucks will make it to the rut. Every season the hunting comunity seems to grow and the woods seem to shrink and it's for that reason that we as spotsmen must be willing to compromise and sacrifice for the good of the game we persue. I've had the privlage of meeting the wardens in these units, they're good people assigned a difficult task. My concerns are more with the higher ups and the biologists keeping count.
