  1. Lance,

Sounds like a good philosophy. The only reason I put us both on the same application for deer was that I didn't want to risk getting drawn for two different units. May have to re-think that strategy next year!

    111,

I had to dig out the March-April Az Wildlife Views magazine, but it contains a pretty good article on the draw by Bob Hirsch. I'm still not 100% clear on how the draw for the people with the most bonus point works (I assume that all 5 choices are considered, but it isn't spelled out), but it states that there are actually three draws - bonus point, 1st and 2nd choice, and 3rd - 5th choice. According to the article unsuccessful bonus draw applicants are assigned new random numbers for the 1st and 2nd choice draw, and new numbers are also assigned for the last draw.

  2. Technicaly the first draw is for 20% of all tags for those people with the most bonus points. After those 20% tags are gone then the draw takes place for everyone else, choices 1&2. Then if anything is left they do another draw. Got this info from my wife who works at the front counter at the greenway office. She is not sure if they go back into the system for new numbers for the 3-5 choices.  It is possible to get the 3rd choice for deer but elk is a real long shot unless it is a less desireable unit.

Didn't know the bonus point pass percentage business - the 20% with the most bonus points - would get all 5 choices considered before everyone else's 1st and 2nd. It doesn't fully explain it on the G&F web page, but if that's the case, then I guess it could cause the above scenario.

  3. I know this has probably been beat to death, but since I drew squat I have nothing better to do this fall. So ...... one more time - please use little words and short sentences:

Without naming names or units  (no fistfights please) :D is it possible that someone could draw a tag with their 3rd choice, when I had it as my 2nd choice and as, mentioned above didn't draw squat? Good luck to them and no hard feelings, but I didn't think that was possible - first draw 1st and 2nd choice considered, then all apps go back in the hopper for the second draw 3rd - 5th choices.

Am I wrong? Please be gentle.

    Thanks

  4. There was a post a while ago about Hunting the Fringe in units 31, 32 and 33.

    Hunting the Fringe

Has anyone had any similar experience with the mid-state units - 21, 22, 23 24's? G&F websight says something to the effect of "...brushier habitats above 3500 feet

in the unit. However, whitetail have been showing up in the past few years at elevations of about 2,500 feet in what would usually be considered as mule deer habitat. " Just curious if anyone has been seeing them in that 2500 - 3500 foot zone. I've been looking at some areas to try and get away from the weekend crowds (if that is possible), wondering if they would be worth an extra look. Thanks in advance.

  5. Thanks guys.

AZ - enough with the age jokes - you're not too far behind me are you

Why Pigman: believe it or not, there was a period in my life when I sort of lost interest in hunting (must have been a mental problem or something :D ). Hunted and fished as much as possible for a semi-city boy up through high school, then sort-of started doing "other" thing (actually still fished some, but didn't hunt much). After my son was born, I realized it was up to me to give him the opportunity to find out if hunting was something he would like to be involved with. Started putting in for javalina again (at first - easy to draw, cheap tag etc., then it was the only thing I could draw :D ) Needed a screen name>>> Pigman seemed as accurate as any!

As a side note, the boy is a veteran of 3 pig hunts, 1 turkey hunt and after Dec. one wt hunt (tag-along only)! He turns 10 in Dec, and if I can get drawn and get him thru hunters ed in time I want to sign my javalina tag over to him.

Thanks again for the b-day wishes.

  6. Seems like this topic is popping up on a lot of the local sites lately, don't know if it's because of the USO mess or a combination of things. The difference is that here it has been a friendly exchange of ideas and points of view, and hasn't sunken to an all-out "bash-fest". The way I look at it, is that I would never expect someone to give out specific information on any location that they currently hunt, or plan to hunt in the future - to me that is just common sense. I have asked a few questions to this board and have gotten nothing but helpful, positive responses - both on-line and off-line. I haven't had too much to offer to this site in return yet, but I have given specific info in regards to Javalina on another site. Was it the area I currently hunt - no way. Was it useful information - I don't know. It was meant to be, and hopefully it was. I guess my point is that if someone wants to help, they should help. If not, just don't reply. As far as giving info in a pm or email - probably a good idea. I know when I see info about one of my units in a thread it is a little disappointing, but then I don't own that info or that unit. As for cyber scouting - I think the problem has been blown a little out of preparation. If someone gets drawn, and the only scouting they plan on doing is on the internet, even if you give them gps coordinates they will probably not fill their tag. If it offends anyone (cyber scouting) just don't answer or definitely, don't give specific info - easy as that. I'll admit, when I found out I drew a 24B tag, one of the first things I did was to search this and a couple other sites for anything I could find on the unit. Am I done? Not a chance - I haven't even gotten started yet, but at least I have a place to start. Maybe later on after I do my homework, I may see if anyone has any other info they would like to share - does that make me lazy? Unfortunately nowadays it isn't as easy as it used to be to find someone to talk hunting with - we are a little outnumbered. I think that is what sites like this one are for. One more rant and then I'm done - I've read the argument quite frequently that you should do your scouting before you apply. With the way the draw has been going lately (and it ain't going to get any easier) and the fact that I'm not getting any younger, that doesn't seem to be a very sound argument. I'll pretty much hunt anything I can get drawn for, anywhere I can. Don't think too many of us can scout all of the units prior to applying. Sorry this was so long, had to get it out somewhere where I wouldn't get my head taken off! Thanks

  7. OK, sounds like "pears" are out. So outside of wild grapes as was mentioned earlier, what food sources might they be keying on?

gmm - I haven't really decided yet where I will be hunting, just trying to gather as much info as possible. I'm currently leaning toward the upper part of the unit as I have a friend who knows the area, has seen some bear there, and may be able to go along. Not sure the exact area, as we haven't gotten down to details yet. After my pig hunt next month I'll need to get down to business and hit it harder.

Thanks for all of the input.
