Your buck is famous! When you posted your story a long time ago, I was telling my brother about this guide on a hunting forum that I frequent...yada..yada,,yada..killed a huge buck and called it Sticks! Well you have a family member that teaches because my nephew was telling us that his teacher had told the story about Sticks. All the kids that hunt were talking about it and gocking over a cell phone pic! Maybe one day I will have a famous buck!

Mountain Lion Hunting – Night Hunting Rules Update
trophyhnter replied to Healy Arms's topic in Wildlife Callers Blog
Thanks for the info. Im sure that there are a lot of people like me that are somewhat intiminated by the new regulations as hunting after darks has always been a big no no! Would you suggest that you contact the game warden before you go out and tell him the general area you will be night hunting? My family and I were spot lighting on the rim (with a cocktail in hand) while camping just for the fun of it and saw a G&F so we stopped. He seemed somewhat suspicious of us becuase some poaching that taken place nearby. We talked for a while and I asked if it would be better if we called and left a message before hand that we would be spot lighting. He didnt see it being much help as a lot of people spot light during the camping season. Since no one is camping in the desert areas during this time, calling ahead may help them in case someone uninformed reports you. Or not? -
+1 I also had this tag last year. I passed on a small 5 and a willowy 6 the first weekend. I hunted 10 days total and never could quite get a shot at anything else. I got a long opportunity a good bull, but shot just underneath him. If you can get on a bull that looks pretty, and the shot is there, take him. The rut never really took off during the archery hunt last year. There aren't nearly as many cow in the unit as there used to be. Several hundred junior tags and several Sept/Oct cow hunts have taken their toll. That may have had something to do with the sporatic rutting activity. +2 My friends had this archery hunt in 2009 and it took them 11 or 12 points so you are doing great! SHOOT WHAT YOU LIKE! Your first bull is special no matter what! They did a lot of scouting leading up to the hunt. That year the unit was dry not all the tanks had water. They had a couple of tanks that had good bulls coming. One friend was going to sit water all day and other was going to chase bugles in the am and sit water in the pm. It rained most of the hunt and most if not all the tanks filled up in the first three days! They changed their plans and chased bugles (what little the could hear) and passed on a 350ish bull on the 3 different days in hopes of finding something better. The funny thing is that they were trying to convince the other to take the bull (I would have shot him without thinking twice. good bull just thin antlers) Later in the hunt when they could not find anything bigger that bull and his cows were no where to be found. I was there in '06 calling for a friends sister during a muzzy hunt and there were several big bulls in the area we were in. She passed on a 5x5 at 25 yards that I called in with soft cow calls. Cow call were not working for the heard bulls BUT bugling would get the bulls to answer and the chase was on! A lot of places to look but we were south of the 260 and most of our best sightings early in the hunt was near the burn and the res! Good luck, you will not be disappointed!

That looks like a lot of fun! I remember when we were kids and my dad (that doesnt fish) would take us to the lake and my brother and I would catch 50 or so each from shore. We have to do some fishing soon!

Wackin' and Stackin' with the Golden Ticket and Chasin' A Dream Outfitters!

WOW! Those are some great bulls and happy hunters! My dad has a late season tag this year and we will be give'm heck. He shot a 5x5 a few years ago in the same unit! -
Mathews Bows!!!! 16 points for an archery tag? That is depressing, that's how may points I have and I was hoping for a rifle tag. Maybe I should be putting in for archery tags. What unit did you get a tag in?

The mount is great. Looks like a pose you might find him in just before you shot him! Do you have any side view pics?

I would not put in a lot of time scouting the area. I have and have not had a lot of sucess. I have just begun to figure out the unit and the KEY is look for permanent water sources and you will find deer. There isnt a lot of deer but you may get lucky and find a big one. Lots of private property up there so find a hunter friendly rancher that will allow you to drive or walk in. Good Luck

Congrats to your dad. You're as young as you think you are! Hope we all are blessed with health and opportunity to do what we want at your dads age!

Not much to add that hasnt already been said but I will add that most deep nasty canyons with a lot of cover near water WILL have bulls in them. That isnt alway apparent because of all the cover but keep glassing! Also, waterholes arent any different in this unit than others.....someone owns it (or so they think). Consequently, the primary trails leading to them is where I set up. As an added bonus, it usually pisses off the "owner" of the waterhole! So look at topo maps with canyon system that lead to or have waterholes in them. Lastly, if you find one bull keep looking because there are usually more that you have not seen yet! If you stocking one alway keep your eyes open because will dump some on your stock!

WOW! Looks great! Both are dandies and you must put in a lot of time in that unit! Dont stop there!

I will pray for your baby! So sorry your family is going through this!

Its super fun throughing irons at the boiling yellow! I like flylining live squid to them also. Thanks for the response.

Interesting, then the G&F officer would have not a reason to ask any questions or otherwise require more information than the childs tag and hunting license. What is the point of the regulation? It can not be inforced unless there is something on the tag to prompts the G&F officer. This leads me to believe that any parent will suffice the requirement reguardless of how we read the regulation!

What killn the fish and a 3a/c bull archery tag...............Wow! Do you use minnows or just jigs? Have you hunted that unit before? I did some calling during muzzleloader hunt in 06 and WOW! My friends have the hunt in 09 and they did alot of scouting, including a family member that lives in the area but did not see a lot of mature bulls so they were a little disappointed. Good luck I hope those res bulls step over that line because some were toads!

What did you catch the yellows on and how far from shore? I was in San Diego 3 weeks ago slinging Taddy 45s and other metal jigs at feeding yellows but no takers. One was landed...I was jealous!
-
Looks like fun. What lake are you fishing at? What do you do with the fish?
-
Thanks for the notice and I am sure that whatever the changes are we will make due, after all it is the people and content of the website that has me coming back.

What about a fishing license? How much? When fishing out of San Deigo on 3/4 or full day fishing in Mexico, I pay $15 for a one day Mexican fish license when it is not included in the price.
