  1. Sounds like a great idea to me! Amanda, i was also thinking that you could put a name on there like "Mr Mass" along with a score or maybe the year harvested just to add some info to the shirt. Just an idea. (?)
  2. Atta kid Josh! Awesome, awesome deer man, you sure earned that one. And a T-shirt to boot! That's freaking awesome bro, congrats to you and post up some measurements!!!!

What caliber do you use and why?

I have a 300 ultra mag from Christensen Arms (built off a Remington action) and absolutely love it. I wanted an all around rifle that i could hunt Coues, carp, and elk with and also extend my effective range out to 700 yards or so and boy has this rifle delivered. I shoot 180 grains Nosler ballistic tips out of it and they perform really well for me. And since it has that carbon fiber barrel, it weighs less than 7 lbs scoped. Just an awesome rifle in an awesome caliber. As far as your rifle goes, that is a great Coues gun. I used a 300 win for a lot of years before i got my 300 RUM, and I killed plenty with it. I changed because i didn't have the confidence in it to shoot as far as i wanted to, but that was the gun not the caliber. The 300 RUM has a little more punch and velocity than the 300 win does so i went with it. My dad uses a 270 short from HS Precision for Coues and it shoots lights out. He loves it, and has killed more than one Coues over 500 yards with it. What i found when researching for my last rifle is that most calibers are accurate and any of the ones mentioned will make great Coues rifles. I also found that caliber choice is a surprisingly personal preference, and many people are passionate about which calibers they like and dislike. But often times it wasn't for very good reasons. If you are confident with your 300 win, then i wouldn't change. If you aren't or just have an itch for a new rifle then the 270 WSM is a great choice. Shoots well with light recoil and will kill a Coues deer just as dead as anything else out there. I just like to shoot far and wanted one all around gun with plenty of power so that's how i settled on the 300 RUM. Good luck with your decision, hope i helped you with it. By the way, you can search back past 30 days if you change the option on the bottom of the page when you are looking at the list of threads for a certain topic from 30 days to 90 or "show all".
  6. Good looking buck! look forward to seeing some close ups.
  7. Great work Jim, and awesome video. I use a very similar shooting setup as well, works great!

Best/ most accurate factory .300 WSM bullet?

As usual, Red is all over it. I would recommend the 180's for that caliber as well especially since you mentioned shooting long distances. I shot the Winchester Supremes out of my old Browning 300 win (180 grain) and they shot great, and my old man still uses them and he doesn't miss much. (Or ever.) My longest shot was a one shot kill at 560 yards. Dropped him where he stood. That's about as far as i practiced with that gun. I now shoot a 300 ultra, and shoot custom ammo with 180 grain Nosler ballistic tips (essentially the same bullet) and they shoot great out to 900 yards. Actually, there are companies who will manufacture reloads for you. They will fit your rifle, and will be accurate. That's true, and if you don't reload (like me) this is a great way to go, however i don't think he has the time to send the gun off and have them play with it. My advice is try the Winchester Supremes with the Nosler Combined technologies bullet (ballistic tips). They shot very well for me and my dad, and performed excellent on game as well, but of course each gun is different and your gun may not like them. But they are definitely worth a try IMO. If you can't find a bullet that works as well as you'd like, you can send the gun off to several companies who will do load work for your rifle, but that will most likely have to be for next year. Hope that whole schpeal helped...

    Guess the score.

I agree with 90". Nice tines but no brows or mass.

Not a coues but still a whitetail

Beautiful buck man. Congrats for sure on that one.

    Sons first Bull Elk

Nice work on a great bull!!
  13. I wear it because that's the only time i can wear bibs and not look like a total redneck. Well, i guess i still look like a redneck, but dang those things are comfortable to hunt it!
  14. Thanks guys, we just might have to do that!
  15. I think it's because the picture on the shirt is smaller, and the dots look closer together. Amanda, I would love to have someone do a rendering of a deer i have, maybe for a shirt or a decal... how much would he charge? You can PM me if that's more appropriate. Thanks! Love the shirt by the way!
  16. Josh - email me the coordinates and I'll gladly sit your stand . He's still a heck of a buck!

    Hunt cancelled-bummer.

+1, I agree with Jim. packhorse, that's a dang nice deer.
  18. Well, this is why you should always see both sides before you shoot… We were chasing some bugles in some really thick stuff again in an area we knew held an absolute slob of a bull, and we had one last bugle we could check out before they quit for the morning. We weren’t calling at all, just following bulls that were making noise. Well, we got about 70-80 yards from the bull when we jumped a couple cows we didn’t know were there. We immediately hit the cow call as they ran in the general direction of the bull. This definitely got the bull’s attention, and he started to come right towards us. However, it also got the attention of a couple other cows directly to our right, and they started to come in towards us too. We could see the cows, but not the bull who was now screaming his head off at us. The cows held up at about 10 yards but couldn’t figure out what we were while the bull was still making his way around one last cedar. He stepped out still screaming his head off, but all I could see was part of his tops on the good side as there was still some brush between us. I could tell that it wasn’t the giant we were looking for but from what I could see he had potential to be a heck of a bull. However my buddy starting freaking out telling me to shoot and he had a much better look than I did. His flailing about sent the cows to our right (which were almost in our laps at this point) into a panic for the next county which of course spooked the bull and he started to turn to leave. My buddy hit the cow call again and the bull paused and it was a now or never kind of thing so I took the only shot I had through a hole in the brush at 30 yards. My buddy was shocked when we walked up on the bull. He obviously never saw the other side when he told me to shoot. I think the bad side was injured while in velvet as it has a big knot below his third and that’s where he gets small. If he would have matched he would have been in the 370’s, but only goes in the 320’s as is. But that’s hunting I guess, and he’s still a great bull with tons of character. Love that palmation. He was an ancient bull as well; I don’t think I’ve ever seen ivories that were as worn as his, (as you can see they were flush with his gums!), he was big bodied but his hind quarters were tiny and his teeth were pretty much nonexistent. Hope all of your hunts go well… Kevin

    Back from Montana

Jim, That's a gorgeous antelope, congrats on a fine animal. And that sunset photo is unbelievable! I'd blow that up and frame it for sure. Sounds like you had a great time and got to share it with the old man to boot! That's what it's all about!

The tale of the Big G2 buck

That's what I like to hear! Good luck on this buck man, I really hope you kill him. You've certainly put in the time.

The tale of the Big G2 buck

Here's hoping you're right. But when are you going to put the smack down on this buck Tyson? Besides being a dang good buck, it'd be pretty cool to have all those previous sheds to go with him.

WHy you should always see both sides first

You're right bmf. I had an awesome time on this hunt with some great friends. I honestly wouldn't change a thing about the hunt even if I could. Thanks guys! I had the skull boiled out by Chris Williams of Trappers Den up there by Pinetop, and it looks great. He does super work. I'll try and post some pics of it.
