Best/ most accurate factory .300 WSM bullet?

As usual, Red is all over it. I would recommend the 180's for that caliber as well especially since you mentioned shooting long distances. I shot the Winchester Supremes out of my old Browning 300 win (180 grain) and they shot great, and my old man still uses them and he doesn't miss much. (Or ever.) My longest shot was a one shot kill at 560 yards. Dropped him where he stood. That's about as far as i practiced with that gun. I now shoot a 300 ultra, and shoot custom ammo with 180 grain Nosler ballistic tips (essentially the same bullet) and they shoot great out to 900 yards. Actually, there are companies who will manufacture reloads for you. They will fit your rifle, and will be accurate. That's true, and if you don't reload (like me) this is a great way to go, however i don't think he has the time to send the gun off and have them play with it. My advice is try the Winchester Supremes with the Nosler Combined technologies bullet (ballistic tips). They shot very well for me and my dad, and performed excellent on game as well, but of course each gun is different and your gun may not like them. But they are definitely worth a try IMO. If you can't find a bullet that works as well as you'd like, you can send the gun off to several companies who will do load work for your rifle, but that will most likely have to be for next year. Hope that whole schpeal helped...

    Guess the score.

I agree with 90". Nice tines but no brows or mass.

Beautiful buck man. Congrats for sure on that one.

    Sons first Bull Elk

Nice work on a great bull!!
  6. I wear it because that's the only time i can wear bibs and not look like a total redneck. Well, i guess i still look like a redneck, but dang those things are comfortable to hunt it!
  7. Thanks guys, we just might have to do that!
  8. I think it's because the picture on the shirt is smaller, and the dots look closer together. Amanda, I would love to have someone do a rendering of a deer i have, maybe for a shirt or a decal... how much would he charge? You can PM me if that's more appropriate. Thanks! Love the shirt by the way!
  9. Josh - email me the coordinates and I'll gladly sit your stand . He's still a heck of a buck!

    Hunt cancelled-bummer.

+1, I agree with Jim. packhorse, that's a dang nice deer.
  11. Well, this is why you should always see both sides before you shoot… We were chasing some bugles in some really thick stuff again in an area we knew held an absolute slob of a bull, and we had one last bugle we could check out before they quit for the morning. We weren’t calling at all, just following bulls that were making noise. Well, we got about 70-80 yards from the bull when we jumped a couple cows we didn’t know were there. We immediately hit the cow call as they ran in the general direction of the bull. This definitely got the bull’s attention, and he started to come right towards us. However, it also got the attention of a couple other cows directly to our right, and they started to come in towards us too. We could see the cows, but not the bull who was now screaming his head off at us. The cows held up at about 10 yards but couldn’t figure out what we were while the bull was still making his way around one last cedar. He stepped out still screaming his head off, but all I could see was part of his tops on the good side as there was still some brush between us. I could tell that it wasn’t the giant we were looking for but from what I could see he had potential to be a heck of a bull. However my buddy starting freaking out telling me to shoot and he had a much better look than I did. His flailing about sent the cows to our right (which were almost in our laps at this point) into a panic for the next county which of course spooked the bull and he started to turn to leave. My buddy hit the cow call again and the bull paused and it was a now or never kind of thing so I took the only shot I had through a hole in the brush at 30 yards. My buddy was shocked when we walked up on the bull. He obviously never saw the other side when he told me to shoot. I think the bad side was injured while in velvet as it has a big knot below his third and that’s where he gets small. If he would have matched he would have been in the 370’s, but only goes in the 320’s as is. But that’s hunting I guess, and he’s still a great bull with tons of character. Love that palmation. He was an ancient bull as well; I don’t think I’ve ever seen ivories that were as worn as his, (as you can see they were flush with his gums!), he was big bodied but his hind quarters were tiny and his teeth were pretty much nonexistent. Hope all of your hunts go well… Kevin

    Back from Montana

Jim, That's a gorgeous antelope, congrats on a fine animal. And that sunset photo is unbelievable! I'd blow that up and frame it for sure. Sounds like you had a great time and got to share it with the old man to boot! That's what it's all about!

The tale of the Big G2 buck

That's what I like to hear! Good luck on this buck man, I really hope you kill him. You've certainly put in the time.
  15. LOL, you had me going Jim! I was missing words and had to keep going back I was reading so fast!

The tale of the Big G2 buck

Here's hoping you're right. But when are you going to put the smack down on this buck Tyson? Besides being a dang good buck, it'd be pretty cool to have all those previous sheds to go with him.

WHy you should always see both sides first

You're right bmf. I had an awesome time on this hunt with some great friends. I honestly wouldn't change a thing about the hunt even if I could. Thanks guys! I had the skull boiled out by Chris Williams of Trappers Den up there by Pinetop, and it looks great. He does super work. I'll try and post some pics of it.

    Damn good Carp shed

Was on an elk hunt recently, and a buddy and I were chasing some bugles. We were making a move on a bull we hadn't seen yet but were only about 60 yards out. We began to see some of his cows, and bits and pieces of some elk we couldn't tell, but hadn't spotted the bull for sure. It was getting pretty tense because the bull was screaming and working towards us and the cows were almost on top of us. Then, fairly loud, I said 'Holy sh**!' my buddy said' You see him???' I said 'No, but look at the size of that freaking shed over there!' I wasn't able to look for the other side, but i marked the spot on the GPS . It goes 101 1/8" which is my biggest Muley shed to date. I'd guess if he matched he would be an upper 220's deer. I wish the end of his beam wasn't chewed so bad as i think he did something else there and it starts to drop straight down. By the way, we did see the bull, but he was only 315 or so. Hope your hunts go well, Kevin

    Damn good Carp shed

Thanks AZ. I've had a few people that have seen it say 3 years, but i have to think it's older than that. It's solid, but chalky and even a little pink in spots. I'd say 5 years plus. Although it was out in the wide open where it would see sun most of the day. Maybe Josh could say with more certainty. I'm pretty sure the buck that dropped it is old and gone by now .

    swaro carbon tripod

Sounds like you have the price thing figured out. The tripod i had that they serviced was and older regular Bogan type tripod. I don't remember if there was a price difference then as it was a gift. I do have a carbon bogan (not from Swarovski) now and i like it, but it is not as steady as the older, heavier version. The weight is the only advantage i have found. That is very true. If the head isn't tight, the head can move (obviously). I haven't tried the rock bag, but seems like a good idea. Sometimes if it's windy I'll actually pull down on that center piece when I'm trying to score a buck or something and that seems to work some. A rock bag would be way better of course.

    swaro carbon tripod

Yes it is. I have an older Swaro tripod and it has Manfrotto all over it. The only bonus you get from getting the Swarovski is that they will service it just like their binoculars. I sent mine in because the head was acting screwy and they fixed it, cleaned it up, and added new feet, all for free. I'm not sure if they (Swarovski) charge more for the same tripod, but if they do the service may be worth it. Just FYI.

    what to do

This has been said before in this thread, but I would let the boy have a chance at him. You'll feel just as much or more accomplishment from that than if you killed him yourself. Plus even if your boy misses, you'll have your chance come January. You'll kick yourself if you keep that buck from your son, first deer or not. IMO.
