  4. So it's known that a bullet will drop past a certain yardage but what's a simple rule to remember when shooting downhill or uphill? I've read articles and seen pics of the trajectory curve but in the heat of the moment what is one rule to keep in mind?

    An amazing couple of weeks!!

Ha, I knew it, Texas is the place! I have family in Texas and they are have the same "esprit de corps". Having family around esp with a first born grandchild is a double blessing. Glad to hear all went well. Oh, I forgot to give my congrats to your wife also, sheeeze how could I forget, she did all the hard work. Again, thanx for the posting and many blessings to you and yer family.
  6. Some sweet info here guys, thanx. Here's why I asked. I shoot a .270 and twice I missed at downhill targets. One was a cow elk and another was a Coues buck. The elk was eventually taken but the shot was way high from where the "placement" was. The buck is just a "should/could of" memory. Both were steep angle shots, one in Unit 27 and the other from a cliff in 32. I made myself a promise not to do this again, so this info is great, but I don't know very many people who carry calculators in the field so "So to make it simple alway's hold low up hill or down" sounds like the rule. I was going to buy one of thos new fangled ARC rangefinders but heard and read some not so great reviews, so a regular rangefinder is in the pack now. Thanx again for all the great input, I know I could find some "shooting brainiacs" on here.

Okay, only thing to add is : the best tools for a snakebite is your cell phone and car keys. Get to an ER ASAP and whatever you do DO NOT USE A TOURNIQUET. Pressure bands are believed to actual do more harm than good. Nothing like getting a 'bolus of venom once the band is released. Ice doesn't do anything except cause frostbite and more tissue damage. Unfortunately persons still dead from snakebites but it's really not that common. It's usually due to some sort of hyper-immune response or extreme swelling of the airway. If I were to ever to get bit, I would remain as calm as possible and keep reminding myself that "time is tissue" so hauling myself to the ER would be my first option. Keep in mind you'll need to do all this whilst your blood pressure is dropping and you're very nauseated from the pain/venom. Plus you'll need to pay upwards of $80,000 dollars for an average snakebite if you're uninsured and/or your insurance company tries to prove the bite was your fault so it does have to pay out.... . Bottom line watch where you place your hands and legs. About the lighting... think about all the cool psychic powers you'll have after being hit, if you survive. Really though, I can't add anything to what has already been posted, stay low and away from metal. Or you can find a cave so you can ride out the storm but most caves are inhabited by rattlesnakes, skunks and bats. So then you'll have to worry about getting rabies or bite by the snake which puts you back to the first answer. Be careful out there and use the buddy system is my game plan. E

    hassled by border patrol

That's really too bad, cause I'm sure he was just doing his job... I had an experience like that last October during a 30B muley hunt with my uncle. I was unarmed but my uncle had an "odd six" on board. Had two agents point their AR15's at us . Not fun but I gotta feel for them because they are in a heck of a spot... dang drug runners have got it all screwed up. BTW, I'm not your typical drug running Mexican but I must of fit the profile: mexican male, carrying a $200+ Badlands pack with hydration system and in hunt'n camo. Dang!!! Gotta be tough but later I talked to another agent in the same area and he apologized for the other agent's actions. In fact when I told him what had taken place six mile up the road he was pissed. I found it best to just follow directions and keep my mouth shut, I don't want to get killed over a misunderstanding . Put yer self in their positions... after a long day at the office I want to come home to the wife and kids safe and I'm sure they do too. Not making excuses but like all others there can be a bad apple in every bunch. Sorry for your experience. E

    SNAKE CHARMER- INDIAN STYLE-

Sweet pics... BTW almost all of those cobras have been de-fanged and partially starved so 10 ruppees was about right . Now if he had been "sarinating" a Russel's viper or Saw scaled viper then I would have paid 'em $1 . One month in India, wow! Can I ask what were you doing there for a month? Have a sister-in-law who spent two weeks there and had enough of it, but she was in Calcutta. THanx for sharing E

    Hungry Snake

"don't think this snake ever got the chance to finish the meal..." Double Doh!!!! Well it was sure nice well it lasted. To bad ya had to do the shovel hiemlich manuver on it. I totally understand though, safety first if you can't relocate the snake. Even if you do relocate the snake its chances of survival are very slim after moving it, but please don't misunderstand me I'm not advocating wholesale slaughter. I'm just not one to put venomous critters above personal safety. Strange critters them venomous reps. Again, thanx for sharing. E
