Man what an exciting hunt this ended up being. thankfully I have a wife that is very understanding of my passion for the outdoors and is a big part of me being able to be successful out in the field. I spent quite a few weekends this summer up here and was able to get a pretty good handle on the area I wanted to hunt and had several bucks picked out. my brother and buddy Ryan were able to come up for the first couple days of the hunt to assist me and boy was I glad they did. opening morning we got into quite a few bucks and this one I passed on early in the morning. that night I couldn't help feeling like I should go back in there and try to harvest this buck sense he was one of the 4 bucks during scouting I said I would shoot. after discussing it with my brother and ryan we decided Saturday morning we would try to locate him again and put him in the dirt. as soon as it was light my brother tells me there he is and the excitement started. me and my buddy started across the canyon on the treeline to get in position and got within 500 yards. I moved around a cedar to get a better position and boom he locked on to me and I rushed the shot and hit just in front of him. they took off running as I sat there thinking to myself you idiot you just messed this up. next thing I know my phone is ringing and it's my brother telling me they only ran about 300 yards towards the mouth of the canyon. me and my buddy hurried across the meadow and I caught them out of the corner of my eye. my buddy tells me they are at 400 yards so I got all set up and here he comes right out in the open. I squeezed the trigger as my buddy says to me he's down he's down. I was and still am so excited about how this hunt went and the memories I will have forever. rough scored him at 73 1/2 but I didn't really care to much with the score his frame and mass had me sold.

Congrats to you and your wife! lots of great Coues hunting in 23, however have drawn the October hunt several times and it can be quite challenging if you don't know the area that well. the weather is the biggest issue with them not wanting to move around much mid day so get out early and glass. I have November Coues this year in there but let me know if you would like any pointers or places to check out I would be glad to help.

Juniper fire burned all the bears out of the unit they fled out to 24. on a serious note it didn't affect as much as you would think for hunting.

its a tough question to answer as far as if its his home area or not without having seen him there in the past to know for sure. it very well could be where he stays and these doe just happen to be coming thru that area. but to answer your questions yes Coues will travel some pretty good distances sometimes trailing those ladies just depends on the circumstances. but don't be discouraged if you don't find him on your cameras there have been plenty of deer glassed up in areas I hunt that I haven't seen on a trail cam. good luck to you!

but again these are just my experiences with this time of year I am sure its not the case for every hunter, just happy to help!

yes food is definitely a big one mature bucks wont be hitting water every day or even for several days as they would during the summer months. what I have noticed over the years at least in most cases if it snows enough to cover up their normal food supply they will usually drop just low enough in elevation to find vegetation they usually stick fairly close to home. to me they aren't like elk that will travel quite a ways at times. don't get me wrong if they are rutting hard them bucks will chase them does wherever they lead them.

I hunt 23 south quite a bit in January and have been in some pretty good winter storms chasing deer. in my experience the deer don't mind the snow until the wind is added to it. If you have the right gear for staying out in some of these storms do it, I know I look forward to it because I feel it gets the deer up and moving out of their beds if the conditions don't get to crazy. I don't know what unit you will be in as to whether you will have rain or snow but both are good in my opinion and keep the sent down a bit. however don't waste your time sitting water this time of year they have plenty of it scattered around with these systems.
