    I NEED a new rifle

DesertBull, May a flea from a thousand camels infest your armpits!!!! (My wifes curse for you when I showed her the link). I'd given up hope now you went and posted the Weatherby link. I'll admit I hadn't looked at Weatherby's web site recently but in June I had a FFL holding friend of mine try to find one. He reported that they did not make a left hand bolt. Maybe he didn't look into the high end Weatherby. I thank you for the info, my wife---not so much. Kevin

    I NEED a new rifle

Ruger used to chamber 25-06 in the model 77, not sure if they still do. I've got a Savage 110 30-06 that will drive tacks but my wife took it away from me. Moral of the story, don't let your wife borrow your guns! Being left handed is quite a handicap when it comes to gun purchases. I've always wanted a .257 Weatherby but I'd have to have it built because Weatherby doesn't make left handed actions. Kevin
  3. Guys and Gals, My dog found a new pal sometime while I was deer hunting and I can't stand to be around her. I've heard that tomato juice helps rid a mutt of skunk smell but I've myth busted that one! I'll admit it helped some but she still isn't fit for human companionship. Anybody have a tip or secret recipe they would share to get the skunk smell gone? I'd sure appreciate it! Kevin
  4. Doug's recipe worked pretty well. She's still a little malodorous but I figure we'll keep her. Her problem is that she is black and white and I figure she thought she'd found a relative. This dog has been mauled by other dogs (a Rotweiler and a black lab) on two different occasions; both requiring surgery, bit by a rattlesnake, and choked on a chicken bone. For a free mutt, she sure has cost us a lot of money! She's pretty smart other than that! Thanks for the info everybody. Now, I believe I'll make the 3 hour drive back to SE Arizona and see if I can get a last day buck. Kevin
  5. Thanks Red, I'll give it a try. Kevin
  6. Scotty, The birds are nice and all, but what is that enormous antler in the one picture? Looks like a mighty nice whitetail to me but hard to tell! It's good to see you've adjusted well. Kevin

Lense caps or covers for leica 10x42

I'm with AZ guide on this one! The Crooked Horn bino cover is great for keeping dirt and debris off the glass and also protects them from scratches when busting brush. Also keeps them from bouncing around. Kevin

    Bullet Question

I doubt switching to 125 will solve the problem, in fact it may increase the problem due to increased velocity and bullet fragmentation. What kind of bullet were you using and did the bullet hit bone? Kevin

    Bullet Question

I tried them several years ago. I handloaded several loads behind the 125 Sierra but never could get acceptable accuracy out of them. My 06 will shoot a 5/8 5 shot group with the Sierra 150's but I couldn't seat the 125's out as far as the 150's and I believe thats the main reason they wouldn't group any better than they did. Kevin

    Full moon and 80 degrees

Curmudgen, welcome to the site and I like your handle; describes me pretty well! As to your question, those conditions can make for some tough hunting. Add to it a 30mph wind and you can glass for hours with little luck. Usually if your patient enough you'll catch a deer standing to stretch or move to the opposite side of a shady spot. Like Doug said, stay late because they tend to move just before dark. At least thats been my experience. I usually run out of patience and start still hunting areas that I think would be cooler--dense brush on northern slopes. Good luck, Kevin

    What's in your Hunting Daypack?

Doug, I too carry a small first aid kit with many of the same things you do. That wrap saved my bacon this last spring turkey season. 3 miles from the bike and a nasty sprained ankle; never would have made it back to the bike by myself without the extra support. I've often tried to reduce the weight of my pack and always seem to add something instead of taking something out! Here's my list: On a side note, after taking my 7 year old out this weekend to help with a friends hunt I ended up with 2 rusty horseshoes, a railroad spike, a 27 year old shed, and a 5 lb "coolest rock ever" We had a very successful unsuccessful hunt! Goretex jacket 16 oz water bottle 100oz camelback compass maps GPS Knive small diamond stone folding saw parachute cord mini mag lite headlamp flagging tape extra AA batteries (for GPS and lights) latex gloves firstaid kit (bandaids, moleskin, antiseptic, asprin, antihistimines, gauze, electrical tape, wrap) pillow cases (2) for meat rangefinder tripod 15's and adapter dried fruit, granola bars Kevin
  12. I'm with Amanda, I tossed them and bought a Crooked Horn Bino cover. It keeps them clean and dry and strapped against your chest. Also prevents brush from scratching them. Kevin

    Muzzeloader Question

Barney's Bore Shine for Black Powder. No matter if you're using black powder, 777, pellets, looseleaf, in line, flintlock whatever Barney's for Black Powder takes the work out of cleaning a muzzleloader. Just make sure to run a lubed patch through it before you store it. Kevin

    Trail Cameras

The mule deer buck that I posted last week or so was not photographed over bait or water. It is illegal to use bait, even salt, in NM so I don't see the point of attracting deer to bait if I can't hunt it. I have only recently started using trail cams and it is very gratifying to get a buck of that quality knowing that I got it without attracting him to the camera. It encourages me to know that my skills and knowledge of the deer in this area were enough to get this bucks picture. I have often wondered if it would be less gratifying to kill a big buck over salt than to get him by other means? I'm not knocking some of you alls hunting methods, I'm just curious myself. One thing running cameras has done to make me a better hunter so far is that I find myself studying the deers environment differently than ever before. I spend a lot more time looking at details of how deer travel and areas they bed than I did before. Afterall, I want to have pictures on my cam when I check them! Also, knock on wood, I haven't lost a cam yet cause they aren't on waterholes where every deer or elk scouter is frequenting. As I mentioned in the thread when I posted the buck's picture, I don't have a tag for unit in which he lives. I found his shed and wanted to see him and the trail cam gave me that opportunity. And yes, you can bet I'll hunt him next year if I can draw that unit, but the camera didn't have much to do with that decision; the shed had already done that for me. So that brings up the question: Is it ethical to hunt sheds to try to see what type of animals live in an area? Lord knows we use plenty of technology these days to do that too. Live and let live folks, Kevin
  16. Whatever you do, don't build one yourself! Building the dang things are more addicting than running them. Ask my better half, she's ready to send me packin' Kevin

    Attention passengers...

OUCH! I bet that hurt. Scotty, the plane is BP colors; you didn't borrow it for a road trip did you? Kevin
  18. Here is a link to the details. http://www.scsun-news.com/news/ci_6755065 Kevin
  19. I've had one of my cameras set up on an area where I found a year old non-typical shed turkey hunting this spring. Low and behold, I believe I got a picture of the buck that lost it. Maybe some of you antler experts can confirm. Bad news is that I drew a unit 100 miles from this one! Obviously, I have the left side and am convinced it is off of this buck. To bad I can't tell how wide he is or have other pics to try to judge him from, never the less, I'd put a tag on him in a heart beat. The double drop tine buck is a dream come true, even if all I ever see of him is this picture. Kevin
  20. Jeff, No I drew a different hunt than they did. I had this cam up trying to help pattern a coues buck for Stan. Maybe one of these days he'll figure out how to use a computer and join this site! I'd like to meet up with you sometime. Kevin

    My 2007 NM Antelope Hunt

    Nice goats guys! Kevin
  22. Yep, I believe you spent some time with him last January in the Burro's? Kevin
  23. Keep your eyes open for him Tommy, you frequent this area Just don't put one of your clients on him Kevin
  24. Obviously there is not a lot of detail in this article, but from what it says I can't believe that a simple drawing can be considered a threat. Any of you Mesa nites have any more details? http://www.lcsun-news.com/apcontent/ci_6689356 Kevin
