That hunt is going to be awesome. I love 5a, every elk I have ever killed was in that unit. Let me know if you need help. I sent you a PM Flatlander.

Man, I wish I was able to get up there tomorrow as well. Good luck on your scouting and hunting. Hopefully, they will start rutting this week once the archery guys head out. Should be a fun hunt.

I guess the weather has kept them from rutting as of yet? No pictures or any stories about bulls in 5A. I will be rolling up on Thursday night for my rifle hunt. Hopefully, they will be rutting by then.

Nice! I hope I don't see you up there. With 24 tags, I would hope not.

Haha. I already have mine picked out, just hoping nobody shoots him during the archery hunt. Nice 7x7. Probably around 380" - 400".

Great Bull! Thanks for sharing.

I heard that tag is almost impossible to get, no? I was down for the November hunt and spoke to the owner of Cave Creek Ranch who said the deer down their rut in December. All you really have to do is a find a doe and wait for a buck that is following her. We saw over 15 does and 6-7 spikes/bucks. The last day we were there we saw 3 bucks together, (2x2, 3x3 and then a 4x4). Now I know where to go next year.

Hey All, Getting excited about my Unit 29 hunt this week. I have a scope question for ya'll. I have a Leupold Rifleman scope and when I increase the magnification, the hole gets smaller and I have trouble viewing my target. Any ideas how to fix this problem? I figure I will need be zoomed in pretty good to find the gray ghost. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Hey, I would like to try shed hunting with my 6 year old son. He is fascinated by this kind of stuff. When is the best time to go? I would think it is easier to find elk sheds since there are more elk and they are bigger. Any tips/hints would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for all your replies. Yeah, just time spent with my son in the wilderness is a good day for me. I am 31 and started hunting at about 26. I have never filled a tag (deer or elk). He is starting to get mad when I come home with nothing. We went to the Tucson Gem show last week and I bought him a nice deer antler. I would love to find a shed one of these days. I guess mide March we will head up North to try to spot some. I'm assuming the best place to go would be the White Mountains area? Thanks again,

My thoughts and prayers are with Mike's family. I didn't have the privilege of knowing him and don't logon here too often. I got an email saying that someone on this wonderful site had past. 30 years old, it is so sad. He is up in a better place now.

killed by a stinkin' "illegal" alien
newazhunter replied to .270's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
This must be in unit 29, where I hunt every year. Does anyone know where about his ranch is located (E side of the mountains)? Near Horseshoe Canyon? We ran into a nice rancher there last year who was around his age. Terrible news. This makes me so upset. We found an old travel trailer that the illegals were using with cans of refried beans everywhere. They are breaking the law and should be punished, not just given a slap on the wrist. -
Thanks again Red Rabbit. Looking to harvest my first deer in a few weeks in Unit 29.

I will be down there with a bunch of other hunters for the Nov 5 hunt. We normally hunt the portal area, but will be going into Horseshoe Canyon this year. We haven't seen any bears in our usual area but I am glad I read this. I will have my .40 instead of my .22 strapped to my side.

I don't have my topo in front of me. How far is Rucker/Horeshoe Canyon from the Portal area? I'm assuming it is East of Portal? Thanks

I know this was an old thread but I didn't see an option to send a pm or email a member. Just wanted to see if those members who previously responded to this thread would see and help me out.

I drew an early November hunt for unit 29. We normally go up the trailhead where the fingers are but never have success. I would be open to some tips so I can finally bring some venison home this year. Thanks in advance

Good luck to you and me as well. I will be in Unit 29 with 8 other people in our group. I'm going off by myself since there are so many of us. Don't want anybody shooting my buck.

Very nice buck and a great cat as a bonus. You have shot 41 more deer than I have. -
Congrats on the great buck! What a great father and daughter story.

Pretty close to a monster from the pic you posted. Very nice buck.
